In addition, preliminary results obtaineddemonstrate FMCW multiplexing of two elliptical-core fiber sensors in a'single-fiber' configuration.

The technique utilizes a dual-IF detection scheme derived by mixing the signal light with orthogonally polarized and frequency offset components of the local oscillator. Experimental results obtained using both bulk-optic and an integrated-optic, polarization selective phase modulator to provide the necessary LO polarization mode differential frequency offset are reported.

The principle of operation and experimental performance of each scheme is discussed.

Many of these techniques allow passive operation of the actual sensor, and may find application in certain IFOS multiplexing topologies. This paper will briefly review IFOS demodulation techniques, highlighting which are applicable to multiplexing, and comparing practical performance features such as sensitivity, bandwidth, dynamic range and linearity. Recent advances in the area of passive demodulation and multiplexing will then be discussed.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention pulsed light from a laser source is transmitted into a long input fiber which forms a series of N sensor elements, each of optical path length L. Each sensor element is responsive to any change in an associated predetermined physical parameter for changing its optical path length. A small portion of the optical power in the input fiber is tapped-off to a long output fiber at tap points between adjacent sensor elements and at tap points before the first and after the last sensor elements in order to produce at the output of the last sensor a series of N + 1 pulses separated in the time domain. This series of N + 1 pulses from the output of the last sensor element is applied to each of two paths in a compensating interferometric of optical path imbalance L. The compensating interferometer coherently mixes pulses obtained from each adjacent pair of tap points to ...

In this paper we discuss the origin of these crosstalk effects in both array topologies, and present theoretical models which predict the level of crosstalk between individual sensor elements in each type of array.
