Despite its importance, there is a gap in the literature about how Iranian students write essays in this genre that this study intends to fill. Building upon Halliday and Hasan's (1976) cohesion theory, this study intended to investigate Iranian graduate non-English majors' use of cohesive devices in argumentative essays, and also the relationship between the number of cohesive devices and writing quality. An analysis of forty argumentative essays written by forty Iranian graduate non-English majors showed that the students were familiar with various cohesive devices and used them in their writings. Among the cohesive devices used lexical devices had the largest percentage of the total number of cohesive devices, followed by reference devices and conjunction devices. Furthermore, it was found that there was no significant relationship between the number of cohesive devices used and quality of writing. The findings of the study have some important implications for EFL writing teachers and learners.

In the early months of 1919 they first occupied Slovakia under the command of the so-called "Italian military mission in Bohemia" led by Italian General Luigi Piccione and then fought against Béla Kun's Hungarian Republic of Councils.

They fought on the side of the Entente for the national independence of their homelands from the Dual Monarchy. Supported by the political activity of Milan Rastislav Štefánik and of the Committee for Czechoslovak Independence, in Italy the Czechoslovak Legion was officially formed in early 1918 by Czech and Slovak prisoners and deserters with the aim to join the Italian combat units. The creation of the Legion was an important example that attracted to the Italian Army also volunteers of other Slavic nationalities, such as Poles, Serbs and generally Yugoslavs, ready to fight the Austro-Hungarian domination. In the following summer, the Czechoslovak Legion was involved in the battles fought by the Italian troops in the territories between Lake Garda and the Piave River, where the Czechoslovak soldiers proved to be an important element for the Italian army's military strategies. In October the Legion had largely increased the number of its components and was transformed into a Corps, joined to the 6 th Italian Army and composed of the 6 th and 7 th Divisions with a total of 25,000 soldiers. At the beginning of 1919, the Czechoslovak Corps was repatriated to the new Czechoslovak state together with the prisoners released after the Armistice of November 3.

At the beginning of World War II, Yugoslavia remained neutral but Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria were forced to join the Tripartite Pact and pression on Belgrade's Government became irresistible, while Italy had already occupied Albania and was fighting in Greece. After several months of German pressure, Yugoslavia finally signed, on March 25 th , 1941, the Tripartite Pact but a group of pro-British officers made a coup and on April 6 th the Axis Powers invaded Yugoslavia. The Italian Military Intelligence Service provided a valuable record of the period in question allowing detailed analysis.

The State was formally included in the Italian sphere of interest, but de facto it was divided between the German and Italian military occupation forces and Italy exercised a significant influence only in the part of the State directly occupied by the troops of the Italian 2 nd Army. The Historical Archive of the Italian Army General Staff provides a valuable record of the events and allows a detailed analysis.

The serious defeat also marked the beginning of a harsher war: the insurgency against the occupying forces. In July, after the German attack on the Soviet Union, the Partisans Resistance started, led by Josip Broz, known as Tito. In 1943 the German General Staff planned a major offensive against Partisans. The operation Weiss began on January 20.

The paper describes how the foundation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes after the WWI was an unsuccessful attempt to create a modern and unitary Nation-State for the Croats and the other Yugoslav nationalities.
