Our research questions are: (i) is the Biota-Fapesp Program following or contributing to the significant advances in conceptual, technological/methodological, and management/governance aspects of biodiversity education/communication research?; (ii) if yes, how do the projects contribute to these advances?; and (iii) what are the main expectations for the future of Biota in education and communication research? Our analyzes highlighted a qualitative contribution from the Biota-Fapesp Program at institutional, methodological, conceptual, and educational levels. However, due to the few projects, it can be considered a summative contribution and not a transformative one. Perspectives for the Biota-Fapesp Program in these areas were divided into three approaches: 1. Research lines and concepts that could be encouraged through specific calls or inclusion in other calls of interest to the Program; 2. Innovative methodological approaches for the area that should be encouraged; 3. Suggestions for scientific research management and infrastructure. Through data and discussions presented below, we hope to contribute to the understanding of the role of Biota-Fapesp in the area, and point out ways to develop research, practices and public policies that promote the strengthening of science as culture.

To this end, in this case study, we investigate conversations that occurred during family visits to Parque das Aves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil). The results show that families had conversations that were scientific in nature, frequently naming bird species, and commenting on their behaviors and habits. However, few comments truly deepened the discussions of and reflections on biological and ecological scientific knowledge. Conversations centered around the reading of informative panels, emotional connections, and previous experiences enhanced the families’ creation of meaning. Our findings suggest a missed opportunity for interpretation to use linkages between the observed birds and visitors’ daily lives to enhance emotional connections with these species and to deeper key concepts about conservation of biodiversity.

Although historically the social role of these institutions have been changing in power and reasons, a dimension becomes clear: the museums, the model known today, are educational spaces, organized with human knowledge historically constructed, shared and reproduced by active subjects. How do the museums lead this process, considering their audience as composed of individuals that give values and meanings to this heritage? Intending a discussion on understanding the social role of museums in terms of appropriation and reproduction of culture, we used the historical-cultural approach, based on the ideas of Vygotsky, Leontiev and Davydov and we focused on the process of learning concepts and practices. With this choice, we aimed to understand how the learning activity is structured in science museums. We have assumed a priori that these institutions are places where the learning process is present but not necessarily the activity of learning. We distinguished, therefore, "learning" from "learning activity", considering that the latter should be investigated. An institution was chosen for analysis, the Biological Museum of Butantan Institute, and we tried to understand its long-term exhibition through a historical perspective. For this, we analyzed documents and institutional and personal collections related to science education and science communiation practices held by the Butantan Institute since its creation (1901). The macrocycles of expansive learning founded helped us to understand the current exhibition not only as a product of the anxieties and assumptions of the team of professionals involved, but as a result of activities developed in a whole century, which currently affect the interactions between audience and institution. On a higher level of scale, the analysis of cycles and microcycles of learning activity was developed by the point of view of visitors and monitors. For that, semi-structured interviews with museum explainers and visitor families were recorded on audio and video. The theoretical approaches used in this research, including the concept of "communities of practice", offered important tips for organizing the educational activities in science museums, especially related to the positioning of the museum object as mediator artifact. Elements such as the use of germ-cell models and inquiry situations, the selection of nuclear concepts and practices, the promoting of the ascending from abstract to concrete, the movement between actions and operations, the use of the proximal development zone, the social and semiotic mediation, were described as important for the professional praxis of museum educators. With the relationship between activity theory and learning in museums, it is expected that this research may contribute to the understanding of museums as "mediators" structures which facilitate the many possibilities of interaction between the individuals and culture.

Topics such as open science, inclusive language, collaborative research, plagiarism and training for evaluation, among others, have been the focus of reflections and become central to our actions.

Based on this framework, researchers from different countries seek to understand mechanisms by which culture is re-signified in these spaces, taking into account the historicism of human action. Concepts as symbolic mediation, higher mental functions, zone of proximal development are examples of vygotskian contribution (as well as his successors) to understand the educational role of science museums. In this article, we sought to address the design of symbolic mediation and internalization of signs of the Russian psychologist, developing constructs relating to the educational process in museological environments. This approach also has empirical observations from a Brazilian science museum.
