If a state is defined as a people, its sovereignty, and its territory, the last component is the work's subject. My aim is not only to answer the simple question of whether or not the ancient Athenians used geographical area to organize the political units of their state, but also to provide positive statements about ancient Greek political organization and its
relationship with geography. Hence, I have tried to discover the several ways by which geographical area was used for political organization. In doing so, one positive result has been the indication of distinctions between modern and ancient forms of territoriality.
The subject entails an interdisciplinary approach, one that combines ancient history with geography. The second discipline itself includes knowledge of topography and geographical concepts defined by modern intellectual geographers.
