With the hope of presenting a general answer to the importance placed on the Qur’ān in Islamic religious education. From the perspective of principals and teachers of different Islamic oriented schools and observations of actual education, this thesis has sought to answer its questions with ethnographic data gathered from people and places that are working with Qur’ānic education daily. The data, gathered with interviews and observations, has been analysed with a phenomenological approach, trying to disclose the actual phenomena as it is explained by those who engage in Islamic religious education on an every- day basis. The theory of ‘embodied understanding’ has been applied in order to provide a fruitful conclusion and answer to the scientific questions of this study. The collective data showed the use of the Qur’ān as through fully diversified and applied in all aspects of the individual Muslim life. The results also revealed that the understanding of the scripture transcends the narrow rational- logic understanding that is often elevated as dominant paradigm in the West. The results of the study will hopefully assist Swedish educators in religious sciences, offering insight and understanding as how to explain traditions with another relation to scripture than the Lutheran literal one.
Keywords: The Qur’ān, Islamic religious education, madrasa, oral transmission of learning, embodied understanding
