The basic idea is to allow unlicensed users access to licensed spectrum, under the condition that the interference perceived by the licensed users is minimal. An important aspect is the need to develop highly specialized and efficient management mechanisms to control the dynamic spectrum access of cognitive radio. Accordingly, operational challenges related to opportunistic spectrum access, spectrum and network heterogeneities and requests for the provision of diverse Quality-of-Service to different applications in a multimedia communication must be resolved. The chapter advances a new architecture for the management of cognitive radio networks, designed and developed at the application layer. Particular focus is laid on common control channel and dimensioning aspects with performance evaluation reported for the basic scenario.

As part of achieving this functionality, a new architecture implemented at the application layer is presented. The research challenges for developing a CRN management solution are on addressing, sensing and prediction, routing, decision making and middleware. Cognitive radio networks are expected to address and to solve several important challenges like, e.g., opportunistic spectrum access, spectrum heterogeneity, network heterogeneity and the provision of diverse Quality of Service (QoS) to different applications. Consequently, a number of management functions are necessary to address the associated challenges with the management of CRNs. The paper provides a brief introduction to these components while focusing on the CR routing, addressing and content representation.

These are subject for research within the research project” Routing in Overlay Networks (ROVER)”, recently granted by the EuroNGI Network of Excellence (NoE). Participants in the project are Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) in Karlskrona, Sweden, University of Bradford in UK, University of Catalunia in Barcelona, Spain and University of Pisa in Italy. The foundation of multimedia distribution is provided by several components, ...

A consequence of this evolution is that features like robust routing, efficient search, scalability, decentralization, fault tolerance, trust and authentication have become of paramount importance. Since network virtualization basically represents the process of combining resources of different ...
