Species of Baccharis exhibit antibiotic, antiseptic, wound-healing, and anti-protozoal properties... more Species of Baccharis exhibit antibiotic, antiseptic, wound-healing, and anti-protozoal properties, and have been used in the traditional medicine of South America for the treatment of several diseases. In the present work, the fractionation of EtOH extract from aerial parts of Baccharis uncinella indicated that the isolated compounds caffeic acid and pectolinaringenin showed inhibitory activity against Leishmania (L.) amazonensis and Leishmania (V.) braziliensis promastigotes, respectively. Moreover, amastigote forms of both species were highly sensible to the fraction composed by oleanolic + ursolic acids and pectolinaringenin. Caffeic acid also inhibited amastigote forms of L. (L.) amazonensis, but this effect was weak in L. (V.) braziliensis amastigotes. The treatment of infected macrophages with these compounds did not alter the levels of nitrates, indicating a direct effect of the compounds on amastigote stages. The results presented herein suggest that the active components from B. uncinella can be important to the design of new drugs against American tegumentar leishmaniases.

This review compares high- and lowenergy transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) and transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) of the prostate with TURP in clinical efficacy and safety. In reducing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) symptoms, TUNA and TUMT are, at best, equal to TURP. However, the effects of TUMT and TUNA on objective measures of obstructive uropathy are minimal and less durable compared with TURP. The sole determinant of when and how to treat a patient with BPH is not solely a therapy’s clinical effectiveness. Other multiple factors must be considered, including safety, adverse effects, sexual function, and cost. The role of TUNA and TUMT lies in offering a cost-effective alternative for achieving substantial improvement in quality of life at an acceptable risk level for treatment-associated complications.

We used Spitzer to measure the system brightness at each wavelength during two occultations of the planet by its host star. By combining the resulting light curves with existing transit light curves and radial velocity measurements in a simultaneous analysis, we find the radius of WASP-17b to be 2.0 Rjup, which is 0.2 Rjup larger than any other known planet and 0.7 Rjup larger than predicted by the standard cooling theory of irradiated gas giant planets. We find the retrograde orbit of WASP-17b to be slightly eccentric, with 0.0012 < e < 0.070 (3 sigma). Such a low eccentricity suggests that, under current models, tidal heating alone could not have bloated the planet to its current size, so the radius of WASP-17b is currently unexplained. From the measured planet-star flux-density ratios we infer 4.5 and 8 micron brightness temperatures of 1881 +/- 50 K and 1580 +/- 150 K, respectively, consistent with a low-albedo planet that efficiently redistributes heat from its day side to its night side.

It is a mildly acidic protein, with physicochemical properties very similar to those of plastocyanin (Pc). This is in agreement with the functional interchangeability of the two metalloproteins as electron donors to Photosystem I (PS I). The kinetic analyses of the interaction of Pc and Cyt with Photosystem I show that both metalloproteins reduce PS I with similar efficiencies, according to an oriented collisional kinetic model involving repulsive electrostatic interactions. The thermostability study of the Phormidium Pc/PS I system compared with those from mesophilic cyanobacteria (Synechocystis, Anabaena and Pseudanabaena) reveals that Pc is the partner limiting the thermostability of the Phormidium couple. The cross-reactions between Pc and PS I from different organisms demonstrate not only that Phormidium Pc enhances the stability of the Pc/PS I system using PS I from mesophilic cyanobacteria, but also that Phormidium PS I possesses a higher thermostability than the other photosystems.
