Whereas they have been regularly put into practice at the archaeological site of Santa Margarida (Martorell, Barcelona, Spain), the particular features of the site required a more specific strategy to identify the contact interface between anthropogenic and natural deposits and, therefore, to conclude the archaeological excavation. As the archaeological site is settled on Quaternary alluvia at the confluence of two rivers, and in the absence of built structures in some areas, it was extremely difficult to distinguish between anthropic layers and those silty or sandy natural deposits during fieldwork. Extensive soil survey by means of borehole logging, full‐coring, and Dynamic Penetrometer Super Heavy testing within this site has proved to be a useful strategy to identify the geological horizon and to map the original relief of past landscape before excavation tasks. This enab...

As part of an ongoing research project devoted to the characterization of pottery production, distribution processes and technological transfer, we deal with a considerable amount of data that are very diverse in origin and nature and must be exploited within an integrated information system in order to provide information for historical knowledge. The Greyware system has been designed to fulfil this goal and provides the main categories for pottery analysis within a shareable and reusable scenario. Its development and application prove that a little semantics goes a long way and that the creation of domain ontologies for archaeological research is an iterative process under development, as long as several projects sharing data, resources and time can develop a collaborative framework to maximize the assets of ...

Our approach suggests the development of a conceptual framework for interdisciplinary research in history as a much-needed strategy to ensure that historians use all vestiges from the past regardless of their origin or support for the construction of historical discourse. By labelling Units of Topography and Actors in a wide range of historical sources and exploiting the obtained data, we use the Monastery of Sant Genís de Rocafort (Martorell, Spain) as a lab example of our method. This should lead researchers to the development of an integrated historical discourse maximizing the potential of interdisciplinary and fair research and minimizing the risks of bias.

Indeed, developing a conceptual framework for interdisciplinary research in history is a much-needed strategy in order to ensure that historians use all vestiges from the past regardless their origin or support for the construction of historical discourse. Fixing the semantics of historical knowledge is the first unavoidable step to build a new scenario in which NLP tasks enable more efficient data gathering and exploitation.

With the possibility of auditing and certification in the area of records management having now been formalised, the process has started of normalising both the profession and archival science. This responds to the aspirations of the professional community and also represents an international commitment, evidenced by the drive to develop this extensive family of standards. With certification of records management systems now being promoted and implemented, the records and archive management sector is on equal footing with other high-impact families of standards, such as the 9000 Standard (Quality), the 14000 Standard (Environment) and the 27000 Standard (Information Security). It should be noted that the only ISO standard that has been implemented in archiving is the 9000 Qua...

The system is based on hybrid knowledge and techniques. First, it exploits both numerical knowledge from atlases and symbolic knowledge from a ruleextended ontology represented in OWL, the Web ontology language, and combines them with graphical data about cortical sulci, automatically extracted from the images. Second, the annotations of the parts of gyri and of sulci located in a region of interest are obtained with different reasoning techniques: Constraint Satisfaction Solving and Description Logics techniques. Preliminary experiments have been achieved on normal and also pathological data. The results obtained so far are very promising.

Assuming that the past is something constructed through reflection of former times, one of our major concerns is guaranteeing the traceability of the construction process of an integrated historical discourse built from all available sources of information, regardless of their origin or nature. Therefore, by means of defining key concepts such as ‘unit of topography’ and ‘actor’, we created an information system for data gathering and exploitation and applied it to some experiences of construction of the past. When applied within the archaeological domain, the result is an archaeological information system interoperable with other sources of historical information. Its strength is that it ensures the traceability of the process from the beginning avoiding the introduction and repetition of errors within the sys...

This overhaul also aims at developing new cross-cutting and transdisciplinar approaches.
This proposal introduces the methodology developed for the integrated management of historical data, considering the wide diversity of sources in order to ease collaborative work and make it accumulative along time.
The concepts of Topographic Unit (indicator of an action or place that can be located in space and time, regardless the specificity of the source of information and its biotic, abiotic or anthropic origin) and Actor (individual or collective author of an action), together with the use of an ontology applied to the information gathering and classification, and the definition of relationships are the underpinning pillars of this system.
The potential of further data exploitation via different tools such as statistics, graphical representation, geographic information systems, etc. is exemplified by results obtained from its application to different research projects carried out since 1997.
The aim of this poster is to introduce a normalized proposal for managing the information and str... more The aim of this poster is to introduce a normalized proposal for managing the information and stratigraphic register arising from the archaeological fieldwork tasks. These files are produced within a scientific framework and are expected to be research information sources. Nevertheless, as a task regulated by the public administration, the archaeological register can also be considered and administrative document.
Therefore, the implementation and use of normalized processes for information management from the very beginning of the archaeological activity –actually before the fieldwork starts– until the submission of final report showing the obtained results and evidencing the compliment of administration requirements is suggested.
Preservation of knowledge is the underpinning goal of every Research Information System (RIS) and accurate registering of files fixing and transferring information is the basic pillar of scientific activity. Our proposal for normalized management is structured according to three main lines developed:
SigArg: Geo-Spatial Archaeological Information System
SgdArq: Archaeological File Management System
NodArq: Archaeological Description Standards
To sum up, the implementation of a tool or an assemblage of computing interconnected tools according to pre-established rules and protocols allows the real instrumental usage of a theoretical proposal of normalization. This configures entirely the Archaeological Information System that we offer to the scientific community.

The archaeological site of Santa Margarida (Martorell, Barcelona) is placed close to the ancient ... more The archaeological site of Santa Margarida (Martorell, Barcelona) is placed close to the ancient Via Augusta. The most ancient archaeological evidence is an Early Christian church with tripartite apse and its extensive necropolis. During the period between the 6th to the 12th Centuries this site experienced a great transformation in accordance to the surrounding landscape articulation, the origin of the medieval village of Martorell and the refurbishment of the church, transformed into a Romanesque building.
Medieval greyware is the most abundant finding at the site. A morphometric and petrographic study has been undergone recently. Greyware potsherds of four selected silos from different chronological horizons were sampled according to their morphometric characterization and examined via optical microscopy. Statistical exploitation of vessel shape compared to macroscopic paste examination led to a more precise sampling that has enabled us to determine more accurately the chronological transformations of pottery at this site and the changing paste recipes.
Whilst some high quality boiling pots or ollas were imported from the neighbouring medieval kiln site of Cabrera d’Anoia, medieval Martorell developed a local production of greyware vessels. Despite the homogeneity of these vessels throughout the Catalonian landscape, a combined approach of morphometric analysis and petrographic characterization allowed us to determine several differences related to the chronological sequence of this site. Our study has been of great importance to identify the local production and to characterize a reference group. These findings open new research perspectives about the daily activities at this site and the greyware pottery production and distribution in Medieval Catalonia.
