In the the case of mobile communication, delay is a very critical problem due the fast variation of the communication channel and the need for effective, fast and accurate power control. In this paper we present our approach to dealing with the delay in mobile communication systems as well as our controller to achieve and maintain the desired signal quality. We will concentrate on the code division multiple access (CDMA) systems.

In this situation, structural health monitoring (SHM) technology can provide the essential help needed for monitoring and maintaining the nation's infrastructure. Monitoring long span bridges such as cable-stayed bridges effectively requires the use of a large number of sensors. In this article, we introduce a probabilistic approach to identify optimal locations of sensors to enhance damage detection. Probability distribution functions are established using an artificial neural network trained using a priori knowledge of damage locations. The optimal number of sensors is identified using multi-objective optimization that simultaneously considers information entropy and sensor cost-objective functions. Luling Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge over the Mississippi River, is selected as a case study to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

As the required capabilities increase, the complexity of the designed platform also increases and results in more challenges. In this paper, we survey some key issues and possible solutions in the design of mobile robotic platforms. We also present our design that is based on the tracked robot named MATILDA made by Mesa Robotics.

With power management capacity, throughput and battery lifetime could be increased, and latency could be reduced. But all of these advantages may be hindered depending on the power management employed and depending on the network configuration. For example, a soldier on the battle field observing a potential target transmits this information to a base station which then is shared with an unmanned air vehicle for surveillance. Without precise knowledge of the soldier's position and azimuth angle to the target, the handoff to the UAV would not carry much merit. The availability of low-cost MEMS inertial measurement units (IMU) increases the feasibility of realizing a compact inertial navigation systems (INS) capable of operating in a variety of environments, including GPS degraded or denied scenarios. Due to errors in the IMU, it is very challenging to self-initialize the attitude of the device in a reasonable time frame. In this paper, we present a novel approach that utilizes a unique magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) angular rate sensor (ARS) in a carouseling configuration in order to perform attitude selfinitialization to within 4-milli radians in less than a minute. Further more, real environmental issues, such as platform vibration and base motion (e.g. sinking) are also addressed.

In order to fully utilize and implement learning control algorithms in the control of multi-agent robotics, an environment for simulation has to be first created. A virtual laboratory for simulation of autonomous agents, called V-Lab is described. The V-Lab architecture can incorporate various models of the environment as well as the agent being trained. A case study to demonstrate the use of SLA-based learning control of two cooperative robots is presented.
