Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has been a significant cause of blindness in elderly popul... more Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has been a significant cause of blindness in elderly population and an issue for public health concern due to its high prevalence in aged people. 1 The causative factors of AMD include multiple genetic and environmental factors. Two types of AMD are recognized, "dry" and "wet". Early symptoms in both types of AMD include deposition of debris known as drusen on bruch's membrane (BM) and the appearance of extracellular matrix separating the choriocapillaries from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Later stages of dry AMD involve the degeneration of photoreceptor and RPE cells resulting in geographic atrophy. In wet AMD, new blood vessels grow from the choriocapillaries through the BM known as choroidal neovascularization (CNV) that leads to visual loss. CNV occurs in 10-15% of AMD cases, yet it accounts for over 80% of debilitating visual loss in AMD patients. 2 Normally, photoreceptors are maintained by the RPE, which ...

Study Design: Prospective interventional case series Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Rawalpindi from Jan 2012 to Dec 2013. Material and Methods: Twenty one eyes (21 patients) that underwent surgery for retinal detachment associated with chorio-retinal colobomas were selected. Evaluation was done on the basis of type of intervention, final visual acuity and anatomical outcome and complications. Out of 21, 19(90.47%) eyes underwent pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil (SO) and 2(9.52%) underwent primary scleral buckling surgery. SO was removed in 9 (47.36%) eyes at final follow up. Encircling band was placed in 12 (63.15%) eyes based on peroperative judgment of surgeon. Intra-operative lensectomy was performed in 6 (28.57%) eyes. The main outcome measures were retinal re-attachment and vis...

Methods: 109 patients of acute myocardial infarction were included in this study. Physical examination, ECG tracings, random plasma glucose, serum cholesterol, triglycerides and cardiac enzymes (CPK, LDH and AST) were measured. Hyperglycemic patients (plasma glucose ≥ 126mg/dl) were sub-divided into those with a previous history of diabetes and those without any such history. Results: Post AMI plasma glucose levels were exceptionally higher in female patients aged 61-70 years while they were moderately higher in males of age groups 31-40 and 51-60, and females of age group 41-50 years. In-hospital mortality rate was greater in hyperglycemic patients. Most importantly also, significantly greater complications of the heart were encountered in hyperglycemics. Conclusion: Post AMI patients are at a greater risk of developing diabetes and concurrent AMI attack. (Rawal Med J 2006;31:55-57)
OBJECTIVE To determine serum lipids in patients with age related macular degeneration from Pakist... more OBJECTIVE To determine serum lipids in patients with age related macular degeneration from Pakistani population. METHODS The study was a cross sectional, randomized and case-control. Selected subjects ages were > or = 50 years and were normotensive, non-diabetic with no family history of any such disease and no complication of posterior ocular chamber other than age related macular degeneration (AMD). Controls were age matched healthy individuals with no symptoms of AMD. Diagnosis of AMD was done through conventional diagnostic techniques by professional ophthalmologists. Serum samples were analyzed for total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL using commercially available kits. Data were compared with Student's t-test. Pearson correlation was calculated for relationship between different parameters. P < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS Compared to controls, AMD patients had significantly greater total cholesterol concentration (p < 0.041), and power HDL/LDL...

METHODS This case-control study was conducted at the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan, from May to October 2013, and comprised patients with age-related macular degeneration and matching controls. The confirmation of age-related macular degeneration was carried out through slit lamp examination, fundoscopy and ocular coherence tomography. The selected subjects were not suffering with any other systemic or ophthalmic complication(s). Serum apolipoprotein E, leptin, complimentary factor H and high temperature requirement A-1 were estimated in serum samples of all subjects. SPSS 18 was used for data analysis. RESULTS Of the 190 participants, 90(47.4%) were patients with age-related macular degeneration and 100(52.6%) were controls. Significantly elevated serum apolipoprotein E ...
Purpose To study the association of serum levels of inflammatory mediators and angiogenic factors... more Purpose To study the association of serum levels of inflammatory mediators and angiogenic factors with genetic polymorphism in Pakistani age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients. Methods This was a cross-sectional and case-control study that included 90 AMD patients diagnosed through slit-lamp examination, fundoscopy, and ocular coherence tomography. For reference and comparison purposes, 100 healthy age-matched subjects (controls) were also recruited. IL-6, IL-8, VEGF, and CRP levels were estimated in the serum samples of patients and control subjects. Using restriction fragment length polymorphism, single nucleotide polymorphisms were studied in IL-6 (rs1800795, rs1800796, rs1800797), IL-8 (rs4073, rs2227306, rs2227543), VEGF (rs3025039, rs699947), and CRP genes (rs1205, rs1130864). Since the data were obtained from a sample population, the Box–Cox transformation algorithm was applied to reduce heterogeneity of error. Multivariate analyses of variance (M-ANOVA) were applied...

The present study was conducted at the Nephrology Department, Khan Research Laboratories Hospital and Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan during March 2004 to February 2005. One hundred patients, 55 males and 45 females (age range 13-78 years) were divided into 2 groups. Group-I patients received rHuEPO and ACE inhibitors/ARBs while Group-II patients received rHuEPO with other antihypertensives such as calcium channel blockers or beta-adrenergic receptor blockers. Monthly increment in hematocrit (HCT%) was monitored in both groups for 4 continuous months. One-way ANOVA on Dunn's, univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out to determine any significant improvement in erythropoiesis between the 2 treatment groups. Monthly increase ...
