Discussion of the fundamental equations of the dense net model, used to describe the behaviour of coated woven fabric, and the concept of the climatic loadings is included.

A short literature review concerning coated woven fabrics with emphasis on biaxial tensile tests is presented. A description of the polyester coated fabric under biaxial test by means of constitutive models and material parameter values is proposed. To establish the right values of the ultimate tensile strength flat and curved grips are tested.

The material parameters are specified on the basis of uniaxial tensile tests in the warp and weft directions. Techniques based on the least squares' methods are used in the determination process. Reduction concepts of the strength parameters are proposed in order to take into account rheological effects in the fabric. Numerical applications to MSC.Marc, a commercial program, are presented. A user-defined HOOKLW subroutine is used to introduce the non-linear elastic properties of the PVC-coated fabric into the MSC.Marc system.

This type of structure needs geometrically and very often also physically non-linear calculations. Due to different behaviour of two families of threads (warp and weft), which during deformation can change the angle between their directions, they require special constitutive modelling. Also the loading of hanging roofs is very special. The wind loading should be taken as the following forces, and also its distribution on the roof surface is not unique. Also the snow loading (for permanent structures) can not be usually taken according the national standard. The authors present their experiences with the finite element calculation of hanging roofs at the example of the Forest Opera open area theatre in Sopot (Poland) new designed roofing.

The authors give brief characterization of the constitutive models used for the material modelling and discuss in details the fundamental equations of the dense net model. The special identification method of the non-linear elastic properties of the coated fabric is presented. The material parameters are determined on the base of uniaxial tensile tests in the warp and weft directions. For the identification process, techniques using the least squares method are applied. Additionally, the results of the uniaxial tension tests are compared with biaxial tension tests.

This paper describes the membrane structures made from technical woven fabric. The authors pay attention to the method of laboratory tests necessary for identification of non-linear elastic properties of the coated membrane fabrics.
