In the Euro-American context, critics embrace Satrapi’s emphasis on universal human rights; however, they have neglected her Orientalist discourse which problematizes her representation of Iranian Muslim women. The present paper looks into Satrapi’s Orientalist discourse in Persepolis mainly drawing upon Lacan’s theory of the object’s gaze. It concludes that Satrapi’s Orientalist discourse has been disguised through her emphasis on the intercultural momentum toward human rights, which makes her role as a ‘comprador intellectual’ much more destructive than that of her counterparts. Her peculiar style and wise choice of narration have unquestionably rendered the book to a wide-ranging audience, as a result of which, Persepolis has played a critical role representing Iranian Muslim woman in the post-September 11 era.

Although all claims to the authenticity of representations have lost their validity, especially after the poststructuralist intervention, it is still theoretically deemed possible to think of representations of others which show some measures of ethicality. The present article argues that Camilla Gibb’s novel, Sweetness in the Belly, in which the Canadian non-Muslim Gibb represents the Muslim people of Ethiopia is one such representation. The article, mainly drawing on theories of representation, maintains that the novel’s conditions of production and reception make it an example of a representation of others that strives toward ethicality. It is then suggested that although Gibb’s text does not totally escape the embodiment of some colonial discourses, it can still, to a great extent, be considered an ethical representation of others due to some evidence, including the professed int...

The present article argues that these memoirs, in spite of different claims about their authenticity, embody the orientalist discourse of ineptness and backwardness of Iranian people. The article, drawing on theories from Said, Genette, Barth, and Alcoff, among others, maintains that the paratexts and texts of the memoirs, confirm the expectations of many of their western readers and introduce Iranian people as pathetic beings in need of a savior, obsessed with the gratification of their sexual desires with the ultimate dream of living in the West. It is finally conclude...

Jungian criticism, with its suggestions of the possibility of individuation and self-actualization in individuals, has been an important source for scholars in the field of Applied Literature for healing. Still, the traditional Jungian approach to literature has been criticized in recent years, especially due to its apparent universalist assumptions and its insensitivity to context-specific issues in texts. For the same reason, New Jungian critics have been recently exploring the possibilities of reconciling Jungian concepts with more context-oriented literary theories. This paper, then, in accordance with this new trend, attempts to do a New Jungian reading of a contemporary postcolonial novel, Sweetness in the Belly, by Camilla Gibb , as a case study, to investigate the potentials within this approach of extension of Jun...

One of the movements which tackled a great deal of complicated philosophical-literary discussions is Frankfurt School. However, the discussions have been based on negation, in a way that one of the greatest works of the school, Negative Dialectics (1973), is based on the "negative" understanding of "synthesis" theory, which convinced many scholars to believe that the school actually has no solution at all, but mainly asserting on negation. In line with the School, Samuel Beckett, one of the greatest literary figures, considers the problems of modern world and modern human in order to create a solution for that. The present article intends to show that aside from his plays, Beckett depicts a new language, new form, new idea, and a different narrative in his works, especially in his trilogy, and therefore a real solution to the modern era.

The novel, merging the issues of race and class in a unique way, offers new possibilities for investigation in the realms of identity and subjectivity in a postcolonial context. The present study, then, drawing on Judith Butler‘s theory of performativity in its broad sense, examines the construction of subjectivities in this novel and attempts to depict the performative nature of the characters‘ identities, especially, that of the protagonist of the novel, Balram Halwai. Thus, this paper, based on this theory of Butler and through the exploration of the subjectivities of the main characters of the novel, demonstrates how, rather than innate qualities, a sense of identity stems from a set of repeated acts regulated by the norms of society, which, in the case of this novel, is a postcolonial society. Furthermore, the paper depicts how, any failure of,...
