Some areas in Indonesia are still doing the fishing business. Since the napoleon fish was registered in the IUCN red list & Appendix II of CITES, the export quota of 3,600 fishes per year was applied up to the year 2011. In order to support the evaluation size in the water bodies around Sinjai and Bone of the determination of napoleon fish protection status, this study aims to determine fish population South Sulawesi. The method used was Snorkeling Visual Census (SVC). The results obtained indicate napoleon fish abundance is low (0 to 4 individuals/ha). Highest abundance of napoleon fish was found in Lapoipoi & Batanglampe, however none in three locations, i.e., Larearea, Pasiloange and Malambere. It is suggested that protection to species & its habitat is done in four locations where the napoleon fish were found, especially in Lapoipoi & Batanglampe.

Research paper thumbnail of Sustainable aquaculture of a protected species: The case of juvenile humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) around the Anambas Islands

IOP conference series, Jun 1, 2020

Humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), also called napoleon fish or “katepas “ in Anambas Archipe... more Humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), also called napoleon fish or “katepas “ in Anambas Archipelago Regency, Indonesia, is a reef fish which commonly found in tropical seas. Napoleon fish exploitation is still getting higher especially in Indonesia. Nevertheless, this species had listed as a protected species by the Indonesian Government as well as enlisted in Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Following a dialog among Indonesian officials, FAO and CITES, quota permission has been given to the fisherman community of Anambas Regency. This permission was legally allowed the Anambas Fishermen to fishing the napoleon fish juveniles and reared them in floating net cages for 3-4 years to reach commercial size. About 147,000 napoleon fish were estimated to be reared in Anambas Island. The first export of Napoleon fish was recorded in 2018 by one of the Indonesian fish exporters from Anambas to Hong Kong with 1,000 fish or Rp 1 billion worth and equivalent to $ USD 71.4/kg. The aim of this research was to analyse spatial distribution, juveniles abundance and water quality of the Anambas Islands to improve the sustainability of napoleon fish juveniles resources. Juveniles and water quality data were collected during field survey in 2014 and 2015. The abundance of the juvenile was estimated from monthly data recording by fishermen and water samples were measured in-situ. Post to the measurement of the physical and chemical properties, water quality was determined by using the National Sanitation Foundation Water Quality Index (NSF-WQI) based on The Classification of the Index numerical values. The results showed that napoleon fish juveniles were concentrated in several specific locations around Anambas waters. The highest abundance of napoleon fish juvenile was observed in November and December. The waters quality indexes show good and very good conditions for culturing the juvenile in floating net cages. The success in napoleon fish juvenile rearing is a starting point to achieve the fish sustainable aquaculture-based fisheries management. This research concludes that the identified natural rearing areas of juvenile napoleon fish, good water conditions, and improved existing rearing technology might support sustainable ranching-based aquaculture of humphead wrasse in Anambas Islands waters.

Runtuboi et al. (2018) explained that the condition of coral reefs determines reef fish composition and diversity. In the coral reef ecosystem, reef fishes are the most abundant organisms (Nybakken 1982). The high diversity of reef fishes impacts various and complex habitats in the coral reef ecosystem. Therefore, the reef fish diversity is an important indicator of the health level of coral reef ecosystems (Adrim et al. 2012; Hourigan et al. 1988). Bell and Galzin (1984) also explained that changes in the diversity of reef fish communities could indicate changes in the ecosystem. Coral reef ecosystems positively correlate with reef fish diversity (Bengen 2013; Marshel and Mumby 2015). Besides playing an essential role as an environmental health indicator, the existence of reef fish is also a source of livelihood for the community living on the coast and small islands. Reef fish diversity will help accumulate more ecological service capital (eco-service capital) and is also used to evaluate the various impacts of human activities on ecosystem function (Eduardo et al. 2018; Palumbi et al. 2009; Paulangan et al. 2019). Reef fish is one of the aquatic organisms that correlates significantly in the coral reef ecosystem. There is an excellent coral reef ecosystem that can increase reef fish production. The primary function of the coral reef ecosystem for the reef life is as a spawning ground, nursery ground, and feeding ground. Smith (1978) and Rondonuwu et al. (2019) revealed that one describing the complexity of coral reef habitat structure is the abundance of individual coral reef fish. The research results in North Minahasa illustrate that the complexity of the coral reef habitat in Likupang Village, and Ambong ABSTRACT Reef composition and diversity of coral reef fishes play an essential role in the ecosystem. The reef fish diversity is a crucial indicator of the health level of coral reef ecosystems. The benefit of fish diversity in coral reef ecosystems is to describe ecological services. Research paper thumbnail of Assessment of Water Quality Status, Nutrients, and Phytoplankton Communities in the Coastal Zone of East Aceh Regency, Indonesia

Journal of Ecological Engineering, Sep 1, 2023

Due to rapid urban development in the coastal area of the East Aceh Regency, water quality degrad... more Due to rapid urban development in the coastal area of the East Aceh Regency, water quality degradation and marine pollution issues become the primary concern in this region. Moreover, seasonal observation of water quality and phytoplankton has yet to be assessed. This study aimed to determine the control of seasonal water quality and nutrients over phytoplankton abundance throughout the East Aceh coast. Direct field measurements and laboratory analyses were performed to collect the primary data, whereby the sampling period was conducted during the displacement toward the ebb tide. We assessed the water quality parameters using a modified CWQI (coastal water quality index). Furthermore, linear regression and principal component analysis were performed as the basis of statistical analyses. The phytoplankton abundance was higher in April than in September, with most Bacillariophyceae and Dinophyceae in all observed stations. Except for DO and turbidity, the assessed water quality parameters (temperature, TDS, conductivity, salinity, sulfide, and TOM) are feasible for marine biota. Of particular concern, the East Aceh coast is characterized by poor-good water quality, with the CWQI value ranging from 40 to 90. Based on the regression and PCA analyses, N and P nutrients significantly control the phytoplankton abundance like a "seesaw" between April and September, with a respective coefficient determination of about 50%. Because of the tremendously high phosphate observed in April, the water condition tended to be P-limited and vice versa for September. On the other hand, instead of evoking the phytoplankton growth, each water quality parameter has a specific influence in characterizing phytoplankton communities in the study area.

They are dead corals in the DC and DCA categories as a place of attachment. This study aims to see the success of the Bio-Transplants method in compiling indicators of fish species associated with the field of Bio-Transplants. They have conducted this research in 10 x 10 square meters on the north side of Tunda Island waters in July 2019 (T0), November 2019 (T1), and July 2020 (T2). The sampling method used a stationary visual census. In July 2019, as many as 11 species from 7 families, November 2019 was 31 species from 10 families, and July 2020 was 47 species from 10 families. Composition of fish species as an indicator of the health of coral ecosystems from the Chaetodontidae family fish species. In July, when Bio-Transplants started production, there were no fish groups from the Chaetodontidae family. The composition of the fish species found in November was Chelmon sp. and Henichus varius. After its age, the Bio Transplants area was one year (July 2020) consisting of 4 fish species from the family Chaetodontidae, namely: Heniochus chrysostomus, Chaetodon trifasciatus, Chelmon sp., and Heniochus varius.

Contoh kepiting diambil secara acak dari hasil tangkapan bubu. Data sebaran frekuensi lebar karapas dikumpulkan selama sebelas bulan pengamatan.

Since 2013, seaweed production in Muara Gembong Sub-District, especially Pantai Mekar Beach and Pantai Sederhana Villages, can be produced 7.000 tons from total 10.000 seaweed culture fisheries of Bekasi District (80%) that was developed with a polyculture system. To ensure the long-term success of providing seaweed production, evaluation of suitable location is an essential step in any aquaculture operation. This study was conducted to analyze suitable sites for seaweed aquaculture in the coastal area of Muara Gembong based on the condition of water quality. Water quality data were collected from 11 stations during field surveys in March, July, and October 2018. Water quality parameters were observed with physical parameters (Secchi disk transparency, temperature, and depth) and chemical parameters (salinity, pH, DO, phosphate, and nitrate). Evaluation of water quality data included compile of mat...
