The mechanical properties of material like ductility, machinability, strength etc. can be enhanced by using reinforcing material like ceramic fibre and such materials are known as composites. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are designed by taking metal as matrix and hard particle/ceramics as reinforcement. MMCs are such materials which are used by engineers for the performance enhancement of various engineering materials. It has versatile application in aircraft, automobile, space craft, and, health industries. This paper gives an overview on composite materials and various fabrication methods of MMCs. This paper also summarises the effect of reinforcement material on MMCs composite and the effect of process parameters of stir casting method is reviewed.
