con® dence that quality of provision and standards of awards in higher education are being
safeguarded and enhanced. This paper focuses initially on the subject review results and reports for
the mathematics, statistics and operational research aspect of provision. Of the six areas that are
graded, the one which consistently produces the poorest results is quality management and
enhancement. The most common reasons why institutions lose marks in this category are identi® ed
and the second biggest area of weakness, namely, seeking and implementing student views, is
examined in the context of a survey carried out by the Educational Development Unit at the
University of Ulster. It is evident that student evaluation, whether of courses, teaching quality or
the overall student experience, is extremely important and has a signi® cant role to play in the
quality assurance process. Finally, recent initiatives are reported that attempt to raise the pro® le of
teaching and learning and reward staff committed to excellence in teaching.

Aineisto koostuu videoiduista oppitunneista, jotka on kerätty yläasteelta ja lukiosta. Kummaltakin kouluasteelta on yksi kaksoistunti, joten aineiston laajuus on neljä oppituntia. Tutkielman pääasiallinen tavoite on analysoida koodinvaihdon funktioita englannin kielen oppitunneilla, seuraavia alakysymyksiä käytetään apuna selvitettäessä vastausta pääkysymykseen: 1) Kuka käyttää koodinvaihtoa luokkahuoneessa? 2) Missä opetustilanteissa koodinvaihtoa esiintyy? 3) Millaisia eri koodinvaihdon tyyppejä l uokkahuoneessa käytetään? 4) Mitä koodinvaihdolla saavutetaan? Tutkimus on laadullinen.

The conditioning regimens consisted of high-dose melphalan (HDM) alone (n ¼ 18) or in combination with 12 Gy total body irradiation (n ¼ 3). Toxic death rate was high: 9/21 patients (43%) died within the first month following ASCT, and 10/12 surviving patients achieved a response. With a median follow-up of 14 months, the OS and the EFS rates at 4 years were 57·1% (Ϯ10·8) and 29·9% (Ϯ14·5) respectively for the whole group. The major prognostic factor for both response and survival was the number of clinical manifestations at the time of ASCT, of the following five criteria, i.e. creatinine clearance <30 ml/min, nephrotic syndrome with urinary protein excretion > 3000 mg/24 h, congestive heart failure, neuropathy, or hepatomegaly associated with alkaline phosphatase level > 200 IU/l. For patients presenting with two or more clinical manifestations the 4-year OS and EFS were both 11·1% compared with 91·7% and 46·3% respectively in patients with fewer than two clinical manifestations at the time of ACST. We conclude that ASCT is feasible in AL in a subset of patients with fewer than two clinical manifestations at the time of ASCT. Given the severe extra-haematological toxicity, ASCT should not be considered in other cases.

This study contributes to an under-studied area of Latino linguistic practices by reporting the results of a study of CS in the emails of five Spanish-English bilingual Latinos. Methods are employed that are not often used in discourse analysis of email texts, namely multi-dimensional scaling and tree diagrams, to explore the contextual parameters of written Spanish-English CS systematically. Consistent with the findings of other studies of CS in CMC, English use was most associated with professional or formal contacts, and use of Spanish, the participants' native language, was linked to intimacy, informality, and group identification. Switches to Spanish functioned to personalize otherwise transactional or work-related English-dominant emails. The article also discusses novel orthographic and linguistic forms specific to the CMC context.
