A Redlich-Kister type equation was used to correlate binary V E and ∆η data, as well as the ternary data. This equation was used to calculate the above referred properties along the binodal curve.

Seventy accessions showed resistance or partial resistance to one or several of these pathogens. Among themS. brachistotrichum exhibited combined resistance to nematodes, late blight and some of the viruses evaluated. Only part of the resistances previously found in different wild species could be confirmed, which might be due to the existing variability within species, the use of different pathogen strains or isolates, or to different methodologies for resistance screening. Several new resistance sources, such asS. andreanum, S. maglia. S. doddsii andS. boliviense, are provided for the different pathogens analyzed. These findings demonstrate that within the gene pool ofSolanum species, still numerous but in part unexploited resistances are available which could be favourably used in potato breeding.

In total 15 somatic hybrids out of 16 regenerants were obtained. Identification of hybrids was based on additive RAPD patterns, general morphological characteristics, chromosome numbers and chloroplast counts in stomata guard cells. A field trial was performed with the hybrids, their two parents and the control cultivar Kennebec to assess field performance and phenotypic variability. Yield parameters varied considerably among somatic hybrids. Some of the hybrids gave significantly higher yields, tuber numbers and tuber weights than both parents. Pollen fertility of hybrids ranged from 19 to 77%. Twelve hybrids were found to be resistant to PLRV.

Activities include (1) the fine mapping of the quantitative trait locus PiXspg which accounts for a large proportion of the variation in late blight resistance, (2) converting SNP-based markers and an AFLP marker to easy-to-use-markers, (3) testing of progenies with combined sources of late blight resistance for presence of R genes and agronomic features, (4) backcrossing new sources of resistance to S. tuberosum and molecular screening of breeding materials with marker GP94 linked with gene Rpi-phu1 conferring late blight resistance, (5) evaluating potato clones with enhanced resistance against Phytophthora infestans under field conditions of Toluca (México), and (6) developing populations and marker-assisted breeding for disease resistance.

Wild tuber-bearing species constitute an important source of genes for resistance to diseases and pests as well as abiotic factors. Seven interspecific hybrid populations were generated from crosses between diploidTuberosum clones and four wild species:Solanum berthaultii, S. gourlayi, S. tarijense andS. vernei, and evaluated in a field experiment in Burgos (Spain) as a way to broaden the genetic base of the cultivated potato. Good tuberization ability and great variability for yield within the different families were detected. Hybridization with the wild species resulted in high levels of PVY resistance inS. berthaultii andS. vernei hybrids and a large increase of dry matter content in all populations except theS. berthaultii hybrids.
