This work has as objective to deal with the complex problem of Dynamic Scheduling in Manufacturing Systems. We want to prove that a good global solution for a scheduling problem may emerge from a community of machine agents solving locally their schedules and cooperating with other machine agents that shares some relations between the operations/jobs. The proposed approach is in line with reality and away from the approaches that deal with static and classic or basic Job-Shop scheduling problems. In fact, in real world, where problems are essentially of dynamic and stochastic nature, the traditional methods or algorithms are of very little use. This is the case with most algorithms for solving the so-called static scheduling problem for different setting of both single and multimachine systems arrangements. This reality, motivated us to concentrate on tools, which could deal with such dynamic, disturbed scheduling problems, for multi-machine manufacturing settings, even though, due to the complexity of these problems, optimal solutions may not be possible to find.

AC has emerged as a paradigm aiming at incorporating applications with a management structure similar to the central nervous system. The main intentions are to improve resource utilization and service quality. In this paper we envisage the use of MAS paradigm for supporting dynamic and distributed scheduling in Manufacturing Systems with AC properties, in order to reduce the complexity of managing manufacturing systems and human interference. The proposed CBR based Intelligent Scheduling System was evaluated under different dynamic manufacturing scenarios.

They are equipped with two pairs of independently controlled wings granting an unmatchable flying performance and robustness. In this paper it is studied the dynamics of a dragonfly-inspired robot. The system performance is analyzed in terms of time response and robustness. The development of computational simulation based on the dynamics of the robotic dragonfly allows the test of different control algorithms. We study different movement, the dynamics and the level of dexterity in wing motion of the dragonfly. The results are positive for the construction of flying platforms that effectively mimic the kinematics and dynamics of dragonflies and potentially exhibit superior flight performance than existing flying platforms.

It produces a scheduling plan, in order to share resources to produce several different products in the same time period. However, dynamic adaptation and optimization is a critical need in real-world manufacturing scheduling systems, since contemporary manufacturing organizations have a dynamic nature, where disturbances on working conditions and requirements occur on a continuous basis. Disturbances often arise unexpectedly, and can be for example: urgent job arrival, job cancelation, due date change, delay in the arrival, among others. These dynamic events must be taken into account, since they may have a major impact on the scheduling plan, they can disorder the plan making it ineffective. Therefore, manufacturing environments require immediate response to these dynamic events, using a real-time rescheduling method, in order to minimize the effect of such unexpected events in the performance of the production' system. As result, scheduling systems should have the ability of automatically and intelligently maintain real-time adaptation and optimization to efficiently update the scheduling plan to the unexpected events. This way, the organization keeps clients satisfied and achieves its objectives (costs minimized and profits maximized). This dissertation addresses the problem of incorporating new tasks in a scheduling plan already generated by the scheduling system. Therefore, it proposes an optimization approach-Selection Constructive based Hyper-heuristic for Dynamic Scheduling-to deal with dynamic events that can occur over time in a manufacturing environment, with the main goal of maintaining the current scheduling plan feasible and most robust as possible. The development of this dynamic adaptation approach is inspired on evolutionary computation and hyper-heuristics. The viability of the proposed approach is tested by performing a set of experiments and analysing the results achieved. From the obtained results it is possible to conclude that the use of a selection constructive hyper-heuristic could be advantageous on solving dynamic adaptation optimization problems.

Design/Methodology/Approach: After an extended literature review, a quantitative research method is used to provide a comparative analysis on the performance of the lot-sizing methods under different simulated application scenarios, with variations in demand and peaks of seasonality. Moreover, a final summary provides the error deviations for lot-sizing methods regarding increases in demand variations and seasonality indexes. Results: The study analyses lot-sizing methods and discusses benefits and risks associated to its use in application scenarios marked by a considerable variation in demand or peaks in seasonality. Limitations of the investigation: As the application scenarios did not explore variations in the ordering and stock...

The process of resources systems selection takes an important part in Agile/Virtual Enterprises (... more The process of resources systems selection takes an important part in Agile/Virtual Enterprises (A/V E) integration. However, the resources systems selection is a difficult matter to solve in A/VE because: it can be of exponential complexity resolution; it can be a multi criteria problem; and because there are different types of A/V Es with different requisites that have originated the creation of a specific resources selection model for each one of them. In our A/V E project we have made some progress in this matter and identified the principal gaps to be solved. This paper will show one of those gaps in the algorithms area to be applied to the problem. In attention to that gaps we address the necessity to develop new algorithms and with more information disposal, for its selection by the Broker. In this paper we propose a genetic algorithm to deal with a specific case of resources system selection problem when the space solution dimension is high.
