A total of 82 healthy pregnant women who began prenatal care at public healthcare services in the Municipality of São Paulo (Southeastern Brazil) between April and June 2005 were followed up. Weight and height were measured in the first interview (up to 16 weeks of gestation) and the weight measure was repeated during a household visit 15 days after delivery. The 24-Hour Dietary Recall method was employed to evaluate dietary intake at the three trimesters of gestation. The mean ingestion of saturated fat, fibers, added sugar, soft drinks, processed foods, fruits and vegetables, as well as the dietary energy density were calculated. Weight retention was estimated by the difference between the measure of the postpartum weight and the first measured weight. The influence of dietary intake on postpartum weight retention was assessed by multiple linear regression analysis and the linear trend tes...

A multilevel logistic regression model was used to estimate the individual probability of malnutrition in 5,507 Brazilian municipalities in 2006, in terms of predictive factors grouped according to hierarchical levels. The response variable was child malnutrition (children aged from six to 59 months with height for age and sex below -2 z-scores, according to the World Health Organization standard). The predictive variables were determinants of malnutrition measured similarly by the National Demographics and Health Survey-2006 and the Sample from the 2000 Demographic Census. A systematic review of literature was carried out with original evaluation studies conducted in Brazil, including all types of clinical trials and observational studies. The search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and LILACS databases for papers published since 1990. The studies were analyzed according to the program evaluated, participants, study design, location, principal conclusions, confounding factors and methodological limitations. They were classified according to outcomes (nutritional status, dietary intake and food security) and level of evidence for the association with conditional cash transfer programs (adequacy or plausibility). We found 1,412 non-duplicated papers. Fifteen met the eligibility criteria and twelve evaluated the Bolsa Família program. To analyze the impact of ready-to-consume products on diet quality of Chilean households. A national representative sample of 10,096 households, based on the 6th Survey on Household Budget and Expenses (VI Encuesta de Presupuestos y Gastos Familiares, 2006-2007), was studied. Foodstuffs were classified as follows: 1) Unprocessed foods or minimally processed foods (G1); 2) Processed culinary ingredients (G2); and 3) Ready-to-consume products (G3). Calorie contribution and energy availability of each household food group, was calculated. The nutritional profile of the national food basket was calculated and compared with two simulated baskets (G3 vs G1+G2), based on international nutritional recommendations. Overall energy availability was of 1,885 kcal per capita/ day; 24% derived from unprocessed foods (G1), 21% from processed culinary ingredients (G2) and 55% from ready-to-consume products (G3), whose pro...

Design: Application of a classification of foodstuffs based on the nature, extent and purpose of food processing to data from a national household food budget survey. Foods are classified as unprocessed/minimally processed foods (Group 1), processed culinary ingredients (Group 2) or ultra-processed products (Group 3). Setting: All provinces and territories of Canada, 2001. Subjects: Households (n 5643). Results: Food purchases provided a mean per capita energy availability of 8908 (SE 81) kJ/d (2129 (SE 19) kcal/d). Over 61?7 % of dietary energy came from ultraprocessed products (Group 3), 25?6 % from Group 1 and 12?7 % from Group 2. The overall diet exceeded WHO upper limits for fat, saturated fat, free sugars and Na density, with less fibre than recommended. It also exceeded the average energy density target of the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research. Group 3 products taken together are more fatty, sugary, salty and energydense than a combination of Group 1 and Group 2 items. Only the 20 % lowest consumers of ultra-processed products (who consumed 33?2 % of energy from these products) were anywhere near reaching all nutrient goals for the prevention of obesity and chronic non-communicable diseases. Conclusions: The 2001 Canadian diet was dominated by ultra-processed products. As a group, these products are unhealthy. The present analysis indicates that any substantial improvement of the diet would involve much lower consumption of ultra-processed products and much higher consumption of meals and dishes prepared from minimally processed foods and processed culinary ingredients.

Research paper thumbnail of 18 O-Labeled lipid hydroperoxides and HPLC coupled to mass spectrometry as valuable tools for studying the generation of singlet oxygen in biological system

We have recently confirmed that decomposition of LOOH into peroxyl radicals is a potential source of singlet oxygen ( 1 O2) in biological system. Using 18 O-labeled linoleic acid hydroperoxide (LA 18 O 18 OH) in the presence of Ce 4+ or Fe 2+ , we observed the formation of 18 O-labeled 1 O2 ( 18 [ 1 O2]) by chemical trapping of 1 O2 with 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) and detecting the corresponding 18 O-labeled DPA endoperoxide (DPA 18 O 18 O) by HPLC coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). 18 O-Labeled alcohol and ketone were also detected providing further evidence for the generation of 1 O2 by the Russell mechanism. Similarly the reaction of LA 18 O 18 OH with peroxynitrite also generated 18 [ 1 O2].In conclusion, these results indicates that the use of 18 O-labeled LOOH associated with HPLC-MS/MS can be an useful tool to clarify mechanistic features involved in the reaction of LOOH in biological media.

Data on food purchasing for household consumption, collected from the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE -Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) Household Budget Survey (HBS) in 2002-3, were used to describe the contribution of food purchasing sites (FPS) to the diet of Brazilian families. All the 241 distinct FPS mentioned in the HBS were grouped into ten categories, according to the nature of the products available. Food acquisitions were organized into seven groups. Supermarkets and hypermarkets accounted for 49% of the acquisitions and were the main source of six out of the seven food groups. Street markets and greengroceries stood out in the acquisitions of fruits and vegetables, accounting for 39% of this market. The large contribution of supermarkets and hypermarkets to the diet shows the need for healthy eating promotion policies aiming at these locations. Street markets and greengroceries represent important allies for healthy eating.

The formation of O 2 ( 1 g ) was characterized by: (i) the dimol light emission in the red spectral region (>610 nm) using a red-sensitive photomultiplier tube (PMT); (ii) the monomol light emission in the near-infrared region (1270 nm) with a newly available tube coupled to a monochromator; and (iii) the quenching effect of sodium azide. Direct spectral characterization of the near-infrared emission that attributes the emission to the transition of O 2 ( 1 g ) to the triplet ground state (O 2 ( 3 − g )) was done to unequivocally demonstrate the presence of O 2 ( 1 g ). For comparison, O 2 ( 1 g ) derived from the thermolysis of the endoperoxide of 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene or from the H 2 O 2 /hypochlorite system were also monitored. The product of the reaction (acetamide) was also detected by mass spectrometry (MS). This evidence clearly demonstrates that the reaction of H 2 O 2 with acetonitrile in alkaline solutions generates O 2 ( 1 g ), confirming the mechanism proposed by McKeown and Waters.
