Methods: Using a longitudinal prospective study design, 90 lateral radiographs of 30 treated patients (12 male gender and 18 female gender) were taken at the beginning of the treatment (mean age = 10 years and 9 month), at the end of the treatment (mean age = 14 years and 6 months), and in the post-retention phases (mean age = 26 years and 2 months). Lateral radiographs of 30 adults patients with Class II malocclusion, as control group (mean age = 24 years and 1 month) were compared with lateral radiographs of patients in the post-retention phase in order to quantify the cephalometric measurements (5 angular and 2 linear) representing the maxillary position in the anteroposterior and vertical direction. Results: Under the effect of treatment, forward displacement of the maxilla was redirected in a downwards and backwards direction. When the means of the female measurements were compared between the two groups, only ANB was greater in the control group. When the male measurements were compared, they presented a mean value of ANB greater in the control group, and the mean of SNPP greater in the treated group. Conclusions: In the post-retention phase, maxillary displacement reverted in a downward and forward direction, confirming the transitory effect of the extra-oral action on maxillary displacement.

Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 43 patients with anterior open bite (26 with mixed dentition and 17 with permanent dentition) and 30 patients with overbite (15 with mixed dentition and 15 with permanent dentition) were obtained from de Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro for examination. Eight patients with syndromes were excluded from study. Cephalometric measurements were carried out using Dolphin Imaging &Management SolutionsTM software (Chatsworth, CA, USA). Measures of NP and OP were evaluated according to the McNamara’s soft tissue analysis and were correlated with the presence of open bite or overbite. Student’s t test and chi-square were used to assess statistical differences in continuous and dichotomic variables, respectively. Kruskal-Wallis tes...

In this cross-sectional study an online questionnaire using Google Forms® was applied to dental students from a public and a private university on epidemiological data, COVID-19, vaccination and the impact of social distancing on health. The rate of COVID-19 infection in both groups was 36.8% (n=46), and when asked about the period of infection, 82.6% of these (n=38) contracted it before the first dose, but there were no statistically significant differences (χ2=2.667; p=0.102) between the groups. There was a difference between the groups tested, since 56.3% of the students from G1 were vaccinated with a second dose, compared to 29.6% from G2 (χ2= 16.554; p= 0.0009). Students were asked about the existence ...

Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 40 patients (21 females and 19 males) were performed at the beginning of the treatment (T0), at its end (T1) and at 5-year post-retention phase (T2) in order to quantify the cephalometric measurements (8 angular and 3 linear), representing the mandibular behavior in the anteroposterior and vertical senses. The mean age of female patients at T0, T1 and T2 was 11.4, 15 and 26 years, respectively, and for male patients it was 12.2, 16.7 and 28 years, respectively. All patients were treated in just one phase without extractions and not associating Class II intermaxillary elastics. Results: The effective treatment of skeletal Class II malocclusion with conventional Edgewise fixed appliance and Kloehn cervical headgear ...

Methods: A literature survey from databases covering the period from 1956 to August 2008 was carried out. Randomized controlled trials (RCT) and controlled clinical trials (CCT) were included. Two reviewers selected and extracted the data independently, and also assessed the quality of the retrieved studies. Results: The search strategy resulted in 48 articles, of which 3 met the inclusion criteria. Distal molar movement with headgear versus pendulum appliance was identified. In all studies selected, the methods used to detect and analyze the distal molar movement were valid and generally well know. All articles included an error analysis method and considered the risk for confounding factors, but only one study used blinding in measurements. Conclusions: The studies showed that both cervical headgear with patient compliance and a non-compliance pendulum appliance are very effective in distalizing maxillary molars. However, additional RCTs with larger samples of both molar distalizing appliances are needed to confirm this result and provide further reliable scientific evidence.

Methods: The clinical examination was performed 702 children in the deciduous or mixed dentition of 7 schools and in those found the anterior crossbite was performed treatment with fixed Inclined Plane. Results: The prevalence of the anterior crossbite was 2.14%, characterizing 15 of the 702 children evaluated, of which 60% were female and 40% male, all of which were dental crossbites. Only 12 accepted the treatment with an average duration of 4.4 weeks. Conclusion: The prevalence of anterior crossbite was 2.14%. The inclined plane proved to be a viable and effective therapy in the correction of anterior crossbite. It is one of the options of the orthodontic treatment in patients in the deciduous or mixed dentition, propitiating greater possibility of dentoskeletal development, since the malocclusion is corrected. Methods: Cross-sectional and quantitative study with 374 adolescents between 16 and 18 years old, belonging to public schools in the city of Parnaíba, Piauí. The adolescents were separated by gender (male and female) and examined for malocclusions. The problem identified for each participant was recorded for later comparison of the influence of its presence with aesthetic self-perception. Then, all adolescents, including those who demonstrated normal occlusion during the clinical evaluation, answered a questionnaire containing eight questions about their perception of their own smile and its impact on their interpersonal relationships. Self-perception was also analyzed by comparing the responses of those with normal occlusion with that of malocclusion individuals. Student's t-tests were used to verify if there was a difference ...

Method: A cross-sectional, quantitative study was carried out with 360 students. Photographs of male and female mouth with malocclusions were manipulated and superimposed on the smile images of two individuals of both genders with normal occlusion (corresponding to the control group, GC) respectively, for assembly of 4 malocclusions: (1) anterior open bite, ( 2) anterior crossbite (3) dental crowding , and (4) Class II, in this order. These images were provided to the participants, who evaluated them through a questionnaire. Results: The less attractive malocclusion was dental crowding. For both flirting and maintaining a serious relationship the previous open bite was the most rejected, with Class II being the most acceptable. Conclusion: For adolescents, dental crowding is the most appropriate malocclusion to be corrected orthodontically. Malocclusions negatively influence the developm...
