The objectives of this study were intended for qualitative and quantitative analysis of diagnostic markers in neonatal sepsis.Materials and Methods: This is a hospital based study conducted over three years (Aug 2005 – Aug 2008). Hundred and sixty neonates, delivered in the hospital, having risk factors for neonatal sepsis, along with those coming to hospital with signs and symptoms of sepsis up to 28 days of life (as study group ) along with normal newborns admitted to the postnatal ward without high risk factors (control group) were enrolled for this study. Comparative study on various diagnostics markers such blood culture, CBC,CRP, IT ratio and Micro-ESR was carried out to know their sensitivity and specificity. Results: E.Coli was the most common organism responsible for sepsis. CRP was reported to be highly sensitive (84.21%), and CBC was highly specific (75.00%), IT ratio has ...

Research paper thumbnail of A new method to derive one set of scaling criteria for reactor natural circulation at single and two-phase conditions

Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2010

Natural circulation is one of the most important thermal-hydraulic phenomena that makes the fluid... more Natural circulation is one of the most important thermal-hydraulic phenomena that makes the fluid flow along a closed loop without any external driving force. With this merit, it is adopted by the passive heat removal system to bring the residual heat out of the core at accidents, and by the primary system of some new conceptual reactors instead of pumps to drive the coolant in the loop at operation. To investigate the reactor natural circulation and verify system thermal-hydraulic codes, it is a way to construct an integrated effect test facility and perform experiments on it with the scaling criteria. With one-dimensional assumption, the natural circulation system was simplified as the heat source, heat sink and pipes, and described by two groups of equations independently for the single-phase and two-phase flow conditions. Based on these equations, a set of non-dimensional equations were derived and the criteria were obtained both applicable for single-phase and two-phase natural circulation. According to these criteria, the practical application was analyzed and discussed. In the paper, the property similarity was strongly suggested in most cases. Though equal height simulation was widely used in the past, the reduced height simulation is a good way to reproduce three-dimensional (3D) phenomena that are of concern in the investigation. The CHF simulation is not suggested. The mass of metal and its distribution is of concern instead of heat transfer at transient simulation.

We do not think that our patient is less exposed to other external stressors (mechanical trauma, infection). Second, the cellular phenotype concerning (desmosomal) adhesion of keratinocytes of DD patients with Fitzpatrick skin type V possibly differs from patients with skin types I–III. A larger amount of desmosomes could account for a higher structural integrity of the epidermis and may lead to an increased resistance to the negative effects of ATP2A2 mutations. This leads to development of relatively mild symptoms. Incidence of blistering diseases such as bullous pemphigoid, essentially a desmosomal disease, seems to be lower in patients from the Indian subcontinent. In conclusion, we think that DD in dark skin is often underdiagnosed. We illustrate this hypothesis with a case of DD with a strikingly subtle disease course, caused by a novel p.Leu590Pro mutation in a patient with skin type V. R.G.L. Nellen, A.H.M.M. Research paper thumbnail of Effect of temperature on the kinetics and thermodynamics of electrochemical insertion of Li-ions into a graphite electrode

Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry, 2004

We report on the potential and temperature dependences of the differential intercalation capacita... more We report on the potential and temperature dependences of the differential intercalation capacitance, C dif , and the chemical diffusion coefficient, D, during Li intercalation into a graphite anode by a combined application of slow-scan rate cyclic voltammetry (SSCV) and the potentiostatic intermittent titration technique (PITT). Drastically different behavior was observed within the shorttime ranges of the PITT response measured for a two-phase coexistence domain and a solid solution of phases 4 and 3. Electroanalytical evidence for small droplet formation (nucleation) of a new phase in the bulk of the old one was found for the former domain, showing good correlation with in situ XRD studies. SSCV data obtained in the 25-80°C temperature range were in excellent agreement with the published temperature-concentration phase diagrams built on the basis of detailed XRD characterizations. The simultaneous appearance of maxima on C dif versus E plots and minima on the related log D versus E plots in the twophase domains was rationalized in terms of a lattice gas model with single site energy, and highly attractive interactions between the intercalated guest atoms. The electroanalytical behavior of graphite within the solid-solution domain (a mixture of phases 4 and 3) was interpreted semi-quantitatively on the basis of a model that took into account the presence of two sub-lattices of different energy (a model of ''energetic heterogeneity'') for Li accommodation, and attractive interactions between the guest atoms on each sublattice, or, alternatively, due to in-plane order-disorder transitions because of short-range repulsive interactions between the intercalated guest species.

Research paper thumbnail of Oxygen Mass Transfer Correlations for Pure and Salt Water in a Well-Mixed Vessel

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2009

The mass transfer rates of oxygen from air bubbles into both reverse osmosis (RO) and salt water ... more The mass transfer rates of oxygen from air bubbles into both reverse osmosis (RO) and salt water (2.85% NaCl by mass) inside a baffled, well-mixed vessel have been investigated. Low aeration rates and impeller speeds were selected according to the Central Composite Rotatable Design (CCRD) experimental design approach. Empirical correlations with less than (3% average prediction errors have been developed. Using identical operating conditions, the rate of oxygen transfer into pure RO water was significantly faster than that into salt water, with mass transfer coefficients ranging between 5.6 and 16.3 1/h for RO water and 4.4 and 14.7 1/h for salt water. The lower rates of oxygen transfer for salt water are hypothesized to be due to increased viscosity and correspondingly reduced diffusion in the boundary layer.

The fact that this structural alteration was detected by a direct method indicates that the translocation is present in Ewing's sarcoma cells and that this alteration, when detected in established cell lines and short-term cultures, is not an alteration induced by the conditions of culture.

Various researchers have also revealed that PCOD is associated with obesity and successful weight reduction is the most effective method of restoring normal ovulation and menstruation. In the present study, an attempt is made to assess the general, anthropometric, biochemical and clinical observation along with lifestyle and dietary pattern of the patients. An association of PCOD with certain demographic variables is established through the survey of 50 women suffering from PCOD in Kanpur Urban Area of North India. After the data is acquired from the participants through structured questionnaire, a descriptive approach is implemented for the analysis. The methodology undertaken in the present study also involves dietary assessment of the participated women which was utilized for their classification into different nutritional status (undernourished, nourished and over-nourished). In the present work, we first present the percentage of participants belonging to different groups and subgroups based on general, anthropometric, biochemical and clinical examinations. Next, we demonstrate the association of PCOD with different demographic variables based on nutritional status of the participants. A hypothesis that there would be a significant association between PCOD with different demographic variables is established from the results of the association.
