Method: this was documentary research of publications fromnational and international organizations on planning and health outcomes. Statistical databases and legislation on health reforms were consulted. Results: nurses represent 30.18% of human resources in the national health service; the systems of access promotion performed by nurses have good levels of efficacy (95.5%) and user satisfaction (99% completely satisfied); in the local care the creation of Community Care Units (185) occurred, and 85.80% of home consultations were performed by nurses. Conclusion: political strategies, the National Health Service and strengthening of human resourcesin healthcareare the main determinants. Nursing is the most numerous professional group in the National Health Service, however numbers remaindeficient in primary health care. The improvement of academic qualification and self-regulation of this professional group has allowed for better answers inimproving health for the Portuguese.

It was used objective examination and riskfactors questionnaire for person with LBP (Povoroznyuk V.V., Dzerovych N.I., 2003). Results: 21.3% school children had complaints in LBP (19%-boys, 23%-girls). The age-related peak of symptom was in 14-15 years among girls, at 14 and 16 years among boys (22.2% and 27.7% correspondingly). The localization of the pain was in lumber region in 45.5% children, and combination of lumber and thoracic or cervical pain in 25.5%. The mild pain intensity was in 30.8% girls and moderate-in 26.9% girls and 55.6% boys. 62% children had pain in daytime with duration not more than 30 min. LBP was increasing with heavy load lifting or during continuous bending or sitting position. All children with LBP had overweight bookbags. There were 32% family-related cases of lLBP. Conclusions: LBP was diagnosed in 21.3% of children of the mountain region. The main risk-factors were heredity and hard physical activity.

Method: cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study. Using a non-probabilistic network sampling technique, a sample of 217 nurses from Portuguese neonatal units who answered the Quantum Caring Practice Self-Assessment online questionnaire was obtained, previously translated and validated for Portuguese nurses. Results: the results revealed that for 65.4% of nurses, Developmental Care practices are sometimes performed and 14.3% consider that they are rarely performed. Only 18.9% of the nurses in the study consider that these practices are performed frequently. The most frequent practices were those related to the therapeutic environment and prevention of pain and stress. The l...

This study assumes that any valuable pain metrics is at least interval level. It uses integration tasks and FM methodology to examine how children of 6-7 years-old integrate pain related information. In one experiment, the WB and the FPS-R pain scales were taken as factors, with their constituent faces as levels, in a factorial design. Participants were presented with pairs of faces (one from each scale), said to represent the pain of two children, and evaluated the overall amount of pain in each pair. Virtually every child used an extremity weighting averaging rule for the integration. In two further experiments, inner features (eyes, eyebrows, mouth) of the hand drawn faces composing each scale were used as factors (varied along three levels). For most children, these features were integrated according to an averaging rule.

Methods: We performed a double-blind, randomized controlled trial. We included 122 newborns (≥ 28 weeks gestation). Each newborn received 2ml of a 24%-sucrose or placebo solution before all procedures. We used the Premature Infant Pain Profile to assess pain during intramuscular injection, venipuncture for the newborn screening test and the first 3 heel lances for glucose monitoring. Scores ranged from from 0 (no pain) to 18 (maximum pain). Results: We included 122 newborns. The overall mean pain score was lower among newborns who received sucrose than among those who received a placebo (mean difference [MD] −1.2, 96% confidence interval [CI] −2.0 to −0.6). We found that pain scores during intramuscular injection did not differ significantly between the sucrose and placebo groups for newborns (newborns of 1 group: MD −1.2, 95% CI −2.3 to 0.2; newborns of 2 group: MD −1.0, 94% CI −2.4 to 0.5). During venipuncture, newborns who received sucrose had lower pain scores compared with those who received a placebo (newborns of 1 group: MD −3.6, 95% CI −4.8 to −1.9; newborns of 2 group: MD −2.2, 95% CI −3.6 to −1.1). Conclusion: We found a modest reduction of pain in newborns when sucrose was used for all medical procedures performed in the first 7 days after birth. However, when each procedure was analyzed separately, we found that the effectiveness of sucrose was limited to venipuncture for the newborn screening test
