There are a number of themes throughout Invoking Angels which show that scholarship on ritual magic has advanced since Conjuring Spirits and point where it is headed. In particular, the issues of crosscultural and interreligious influence and the question of categorization loom large. While the authors here have made significant contributions to these topics—such as Gilbert’s scientific approach to magic, the role of the Ars notoria as theurgy, or the Jewish influences on the Liber razielis and the Liber de essentia spirituum—they also make clear that their offerings should serve as the foundation for future work. Just as Conjuring Spirits did for medieval ritual magic, Invoking Angels has set a new path for the field of medieval theurgy.

Prof. Ilaria Pavan (Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa), a scholar of the Fascist period and currently fellow at the Italian Academy at Columbia University, will participate in the discussion. The Renaissance brought about social, economic and cultural changes that defined what historians have described as " a new world ". Side by side with the unfolding of scientific thought, wondrous inventions, the flourishing of the arts and the rise of new forms of government, this new world also segregated the Jewish minority. Segregation was maintained for over three centuries shaping the Italian Jewish communities in many ways including the development of various forms of internal governance. Napoleon's conquest of Italy upturned this structure, and, with the new law regulating the Jewish communities promulgated in 1808, he radically changed their organizational and political settings. As a consequence, a new model of Jewish community emerged, some aspects of which were reinforced under Fascist rule and are still in existence. The purpose of this class is to outline the organizational changes of community institutions and the way in which they affected their they political and social attitudes. Yaakov Andrea Lattes, PhD, has taught at the Department of Jewish History of Bar Ilan University, Israel and at online Jewish Studies of Gratz College of Philadelphia. His research focuses on early modern societies, with a particular focus on the Jews of Italy. Dr. Lattes, has published four books, as well as about forty papers focusing on Italian Jewish history, the Jewish political tradition, and the history of Jewish institutions. Dr. Lattes studies the social and political developments of Italian Jewry in our days, and has published a book on current trends of assimilation of Jews in Italy.

In fact, during Early modern period different types of confraternities and academies flourished in Jewish ghettos. A huge quantity of literature and diverse sources, part still manuscript and some as printed matter, was produced by these organizations. As consequence, this research intends to focus on two very different cities as case study, Venice and Rome, for tracing the networks of many sort of activities which engaged the Jewish population. They all had a central role in Jewish culture and social development of the Early modern period and contributed enormously to the spreading of popular doctrines and literature. They also sponsored the publication of devotional manuals in Hebrew for the use of these devotional in Mantua, Venice, Florence and elsewhere. A mapping of these organizations active among Jews in Italy during this period has never been done, partly because the difference between the various types of societies, academies and brotherhoods is not always clear. This research should deal with two different cities representing two very diverse situations. The purpose is to map the many organizations which operated inside these Jewish ghettos during 17 th Century and their social life, their background as well as their tasks, and the role they played. It is important to underline, that fraternities of those cities in particular left some interesting registers and archive documents still manuscripts, for example the Register of Venitian Shomerim la-boker and the Roman Register of Ghemilut Hasadim. The analysis of this kind of many documents, as well as the comparison between two different realities, should be able to shed light on many aspects of inner Jewish life, such as: nonconformist attitude toward religion, use of leisure time, economic stratification, attitude toward poor and poverty, and so on. KRAKÓW, POLAND, JULY 15-19, 2018
This panel on the Italian rabbinate aims at scrutinizing whether Italian Jews represent a particular model of confronting modernity and under which conditions is it possible to address the existence of an Italian Jewish "special path". It is thus intended to stimulate a reassessment of the Italian Jewish experience in the transition from the early-modern to the modern period from within a European perspective.
