There are disturbing signs and a string of developments that warrant such observations! The charade for the dismissal of the Auditor General is just one them but also the arrest of two Cypriots-a Greek and a Turkish Cypriot-for unfurling a banner on October 1 st Celebrations at Cyprus's Independence Day Parade displaying the sign: "Republic Of Cyprus-The Only Solution". The valued freedom of expression enshrined in a democracy was considered inappropriate and the police apprehended the two culprits to face their day in the court.

Among the ashes of uncertainty there always comes a time when democracy outshines and surprises all with a glimmer of hope for those people of lesser gods. Trapped in a merry-go-round, a vast population is unable to escape the reality of events and whether equal or not, they, nevertheless are compelled to cast a vote as a civic duty to ensure the continuation of a democratic system meant, "to serve all people equally!"
Can the government be honest and without spins explain to the citizens of the Republic, what does... more Can the government be honest and without spins explain to the citizens of the Republic, what does “A Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation (BBF) with Political Equality” actually means?
To most people, the proposed BBF has become an illusionary concept and they are wondering as to why the President is so insistent on negotiating such a dead-end concept; a political system that does not exist elsewhere in the world! Is Cyprus to become another guinea-pig experimentation in line with the Anastasiades/Troika’s 2013 Bail-in robbery of emptying people’s bank accounts?

In most cases, undoubtedly the answer is a profound "yes"! This is an issue that certainly demands scrutiny but as long as political immunity exists, which prevents prosecution for bad political behaviour and bad decision-making policies that can harm the state or citizens the ineptness of political life will continue. The parliamentary process somewhat exonerates politicians from doing anything wrong; they become untouchable! Under those terms, democracy nurtures unbridled corruption in public office, institutions and society at large. The influence of "elected dictatorship" and nepotism soon infiltrates all aspects of life in society! If democracy breeds corruption, then meritocracy (advocated by Socrates, the Greek philosopher) can be the only way forward to excellence! One country that has failed to introduce the merit system (meritocracy) in the selection process is the Republic of Cyprus.

Who can say but developments certainly display worrying factors: politically, socially and economically! A successive bungling leadership and the political parties have reduced Cyprus to its present state of affairs! But today, there are more important matters to consider: that's to win the imminent elections on 9 of June 2024!
The battle of words begun with frenzy! Kommatokratia (politicocracy) have sharpened their tongues-and knives-to win seats for their candidates. Citizens will select a new crop of 705 MEPs for the failed EU parliament but for Cyprus the selection is more complex; it means the election of new Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Municipal Counsellors including Administrative District Heads all on the same day! Voting could turn out to be a feast for some as well as tears and famine for others!
