Dual use solar surfaces for local grids and net zero development

The history of hydro, nuclear and coal offer little to guide contemporary photovoltaics infrastructure deployment. Putting gigawatts of solar panels on the cheapest available real estate will have lasting negative consequences: new approaches are needed to avoid unnecessary, undesirable and both predictable and unpredictable environmental, social and economic side effects.Rather than taking over productive farmers’ fields with gigawatt scale solar plantations that unbalance grids and introduce new transmission needs, the many sunny surfaces proximal to load should be pressed into dual-use: efficient pavement integrated photovoltaics (PIPV) avoid misappropriation of real-estate, do not affect current use or aesthetics of surfaces and require no transmission lines. We call this dual-use of high value real estate surface solar, and demonstrate the opportunity for superior IRR over traditional deployment.

New computer-based techniques have added horsepower rather than intelligence to traditional approaches, and have not addressed their principal limitations, chief of which is the inability to tailor presentations to individual users at run-time. We believe a model of the user is needed to support this kind of run-time determination of form and content. We describe our approach to the acquisition, representation and exploitation of user models: the most plausible user model is the result of an abductive recognition process and it incorporates assumptions about the user which are then used to constrain the design by abduction of the best presentation. Both recognition and design processes are performed at run-time. We describe a prototypical implementation designed to demonstrate these ideas in the domain of video authoring. Our approach to authoring is intended to apply ...

By contrast, the intent-based authoring paradigm allows the form and content of a document to be determined at run-time, which is achieved through the decoupling of content and intent. A prototypical distributed multimedia platform (Valhalla) is introduced. Agents inhabiting the Valhalla framework are members of one of three classes: client applications, media servers, and other service providers (such as an artificial intelligence based reasoning engine to support intent-based authoring). Implementations of members of these classes are introduced through the description of a departmental hyperbrochure application. 1 Introduction A traditional video author is faced with a number of well-identified but seemingly unavoidable obstacles. The author must first acquire, log, and annotate a database of raw footage, from which must...

Sorting the good material from the bad would effectively reduce required resources by leaving behind the bad material and only transporting and processing the good material. We use a relational influence diagram with an explicit utility model applied to the scenario in which an unknown number of rocks in unknown positions with unknown mineral compositions pass over 7 sensors toward 7 diverters on a high-throughput rock-sorting machine developed by MineSense TM Technologies Ltd. After receiving noisy sensor data, the system has 400 ms to decide whether to activate diverters which will divert the rocks into either a keep or discard bin. We learn the model offline and do online inference. Our result improves over the current state-of-the-art.
