This is a biological, irreversible, progressive, and universal process that results from genetic and environmental factors, such as diet, physical activity, smoking, harmful alcohol consumption, and exposure to toxins, among others. Aging is a consequence of molecular and cellular damage built up over time. This damage begins with a gradual decrease in physical and mental capacity, thus increasing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Neuronal, functional, and structural damage can be explained by an imbalance among free radicals, reactive oxygen species, reactive nitrogen species, and antioxidants, which finally lead to oxidative stress. Due to the key role of free radicals, reactive oxygen species, and reactive nitrogen species, antioxidant therapy may reduce the oxidative damage associated with neurodegeneration. Exogenous antioxidants are molecules that may help maintain the balance between the formation and elimination of free radicals, thus protecting the cell from their toxicity. Among them, polyphenols are a broad group of secondary plant metabolites with potent antioxidant properties. Here, we review several studies that show the potential role of polyphenol consumption to prevent, or slow down, harmful oxidative processes linked to neurodegenerative disorders.

In this method each node is calculated considering the distance between the elements and the difference between these elements and an average element, allowing the selection of the most probable node. Two examples of tRNA phylogenies (E coti set and Phe family) are analyzed, giving both reliable trees. Data from these dendrograms give support to the idea of an early cloverleaf arising.

Phylogenetic trees were constructed from the differences in bulkiness, refractivity index, hydrophobicity, polarity and optical rotation of 9 vertebrate calcitonins. A correlation of the form y = a x b was found between the number of changes (x) and the differences in any given physico-chemical property (y). This correlation implies that the evolutionary time can not be evaluated directly from the number of changes between species.

The same correspondence has been demonstrated for the conservation of the physico-chemical properties in the amino acid substitutions. Both parameters are similar in showing higher correlation with the most frequent amino acid substitutions than with the feasibility of changes at the level of the respective codons. Some kind of restrictions for the expression of the genomic changes, due to the conservation of the secondary structure of proteins and/or the physicochemical properties of the substituted amino acids, could account for the differences found between the distribution of the amino acid substitutions and the most probable codon changes.

It is based on the recognition of well-de"ned pentapeptides, which allows the discrimination of helices, sheets and random coils in proteins. Presently, a success rate of about 65% is achieved for a three-state model.

The procedure uses a massive microalga culture as a source of OH-, which increases the pH of the medium killing the bacterial population. In the device the alga culture remains separated from the waste water by a mesh of synthetic material or a ceramic permeable to OH- .
