Time can be taken into account as an implicit and discriminating factor, projecting itself onto the building and imbuing three aspects of its conservation: there is a relationship between the historical evolution of the concept of restoration and a change in the perception of time; the relationship between sense of time and the development of the building through time is likewise significant; thus a temporal approach to ancient buildings leads to a pluralistic attitude toward their physical decay. For example, assuming time to be a dimension of a building alters the concepts of both entirety and decay. An increasingly nuanced contemporary perception of time is supposed to enhance critical thinking about preservation, but this requires a more clearly articulated idea of intervention, and a many-sided approach that combines reason and emotions. Deliberately including a recognition of the passage of time within a preservation programme requires significant effort to reconcile technical aspects and perception, enhancing the idea of conservation interventions as never-ending interpretation, and suggesting further ways of appreciating built heritage. The discussion is centred around attitudes to monuments in Italy but the approach is relevant internationally.

The preliminary study, project and restoration process of the bell tower of the Frari church in Venice is an exemplary case of intervention on a historic building. This intervention started with indepth research into the documentary data along with a detailed study of the material fabric which has made it possible to compare the verisimilitude and gaps in the historic sources, the evolution of the building, its built reality and the effects of the repair works carried out in the past at the same time as the damages in the fabric were monitored. Thanks to the knowledge thus gleaned, the restoration works proceeded with great caution in order to respect the material history of the building and shortand long-term structural compatibility. *Ilaria Cavaggioni y Alberto Lionello son arquitectos de la Sopraintendenza per i beni architettonici, per il paesaggio e per il patrimonio storico, artistico ed etnoantropologico di Venezia e Laguna.

From its very origins, the city has always had to withstand hostile environmental conditions, such as unstable soil, overflowing tides, and rising damp. Hence traditional materials and techniques are the result of a thousand-year-old selection aimed at improving their durability. Since the end of the nineteenth century, however, historical surfaces have been progressively replaced by new short-lasting plasters, following the trend of systematic refurbishment meant to maximize economic output with disregard for good practices. As tourism became the driving force of a social, cultural, and architectural transformation, a sharp decrease in local population and craftsmanship has caused the loss of traditional know-how, leading to irreversible decline and low-quality interventions. All this makes it necessary to reconsider the use of traditional materials and building skills, trusting, once again, in the Venetian crafts...

Though as a pole of the contemporary public life in Novellara, housing at present both a museum and a nineteenth century theatre, the Rocca recalls its military past through its name and by means of the still standing remains of the walls and corner towers. Besides a well-documented historical development, the stratigraphic investigation of the northern façade-the only part that still hasn't been restored-allowed a direct observation of the material traces revealing the slow transformation of the Rocca from a fortification to a residential castle. This study gave the chance of understanding the different constructive phases of the castle, making a chronological sequence out of them but it was also meant to reflect about the changes of its character, as the building has been acquiring a complex identity through time, due both to high qualified architectural episodes and to as much meaningful though tiny changes. Thus, the permanence of the stratified marks can be regarded as one of the main goals of a preservation project.

The Conference has been held in March 26th, 27th and 28th 2020 in Granada (Spain), at the Laboratory of Archaeology and Architecture of the City (Laboratorio de Arqueología y Arquitectura de la Ciudad, LAAC) of the School of Arabic Studies (Escuela de Estudios Árabes, EEA), a research centre that belongs to the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC). The main objective of FORTMED conferences is to exchange and share knowledge for a better understanding, assessment, management and exploitation of the built Cultural Heritage. The focus is on defensive architecture in the Mediterranean area, from the Antiquity to the present day, although it does not exclude other fortifications built overseas but high influenced by those on the Mediterranean.
