Although legislation can be used as a tool for the practical application of QOL principles, QOL assessment information is required to further develop legislation and monitor the fulfillment of laws, policies, and the SDGs. A validated QOL model, which provides a set of concepts that can be one useful way for understanding and assessing QOL, can also function to assess many of the rights and goals promulgated in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and in the SDGs. This article illustrates the overlap between the CRPD, SDGs and QOL using the #Rights4MeToo Scale, a new measurement instrument for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The instrument's value lies in its potential to: (a) raise awareness about the rights enshrined in the CRPD; (b) design, implement, and evaluat...

Firstly, the importance of attitudes of non disabled people faced with people with disabilities, a topic which has many assessment techniques and programs for a change of attitudes. Se condly, the importance of terminology associated with disability, a topic which lacks assessment resources. Thirdly, the relationship between terminology and attitudes, a problem which WHO attempted to solve with their proposal, the In ternational Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps. In this context, this research aims to create a technique of assessment of attitudes through terms, using a twenty terms Likert scale, the Terms Associated with Disability Evaluation Scale (EVT), in order to analize the structure and ex tent of the terms' semantic connotations, the relationship between terminology and attitudes towards disabled people, and their role in programs for modification, change and improvement of attitudes.

A sample of 420 participants with ASD and ID aged between 4 and 21 years old was evaluated using the ASD-KidsLife Scale. Females obtained lower scores in most of the items of social inclusion. These differences remained when the covariables of level of ID, support needs, and age were controlled. None of the items presented differential item functioning as a function of gender. Gender differences that were found in social inclusion are discussed and recommendations are given in order to provide equal opportunities to girls and boys with ASD.

For that reason, and with the aim of answering the growing demand for an adequate evaluation instrument for this group, the KidsLife scale was developed. This research provides evidence of the reliability and validity of the scale, which is composed of 96 items spread over eight subscales, and completed by a third-party respondent. The validation sample comprised 1060 people with intellectual disability, with ages ranging from 4 to 21 years old (M=13.51; SD=5.04). The results suggest that the eight quality of life domains assessed on the scale are reliable (Cronbach's alpha ranging from 0.812 to 0.949). The evidence of the validity of the construct provided by Confirmatory Factor Analysis also demonstrated adeq...

Although research shows that students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can develop abilities a... more Although research shows that students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can develop abilities and skills associated with self-determination (e.g., decision making, problem solving, goal setting and attainment) when opportunities and supports are provided, students with ASD tend to show lower levels of self-determination compared to their peers without disabilities or with other disabilities. Researchers have suggested that common ASD characteristics may influence the development and expression of self-determination and that there may be less focus on self-determination and its development in ASD. Therefore, the aim of this review was to investigate existing studies that examined factors impacting the development of self-determination for students with ASD or implemented self-determination interventions with students with ASD. We reviewed existing empirical studies related to self-determination and students with ASD published in peer-reviewed journals. We examined the thematic categories of research studies, rigor of research, and influential factors. Among the 18 included studies, three distinct thematic categories were identified: (a) intervention research, (b) stakeholders' perceptions, and (c) contextual analysis. Intervention articles were the most prevalent, followed by articles that reported stakeholders' perceptions. Contextual analysis articles were less common. Several factors have been identified that influence student self-determination (e.g. age, gender, hours spent with peers, educational placement). This review suggests that self-determination of students with ASD can be promoted through instructional methods, and there are personal and environmental factors that are important to consider when supporting the self-determination of students with ASD. However, there is a need for enhanced rigor of research in future studies.

The present study is to examine the needs that arise in the aging process of this population. To detect these needs is fundamental to ensure personal wellbeing; almost no psychometrically sound instruments have been developed. Method: A structured interview was developed and evaluated by a panel of 20 experts to obtain evidence of content validity. The interview was then applied to 1,173 people with intellectual disability. The ages ranged from 35 to 80 (M = 52.27; SD = 7.5). Results: The interview consisted of 93 items evaluating four areas: perceived needs, personal problems, future perspectives, and solutions required. The results demonstrated the proximity and relationship of the various needs evaluated. In addition it was observed that those with intellectual disability who were older, male and users of residential services tended to indicate more needs, problems, and required more solutions. Conclusions: The instrument has adequate evidence of validity, allowing the evaluation of specific needs of people with intellectual disability. The results advocate the design of transversal intervention policies in order to effectively meet the needs and requirements of this population.

The KidsLife Scale was applied to 1060 children with ID, 25% of whom also had ASD, aged 4-21 years old. Those with ASD showed lower scores in several QOL domains but, when the effect of other variables was controlled, lower scores were only kept for interpersonal relationships, social inclusion, and physical wellbeing. Slightly higher scores were found for material wellbeing. ASD, Level of ID and support needs were the covariables with the greatest influence in most domains, while gender was only significant for social inclusion (girls scored lower than boys).
