The design languages and forms of knowledge used by architects and other designers indicate that ... more The design languages and forms of knowledge used by architects and other designers indicate that they not only operate ‘within the same domains of knowledge and action’, but also share similar historical contexts. Latin American modern architecture and design histories constitute an account of cultural exchanges between architectural and design practitioners working on a trans-national and multidisciplinary basis. Reviewing these practices today may help break the tendency of historical accounts to focus on a ‘diffusionist model’ and reinforce the critical acknowledgement of the modern legacy in Latin America. The work of architect and designer Gio Ponti is an example of this. During the 1950s Ponti travelled to many countries and built one of his masterpieces, Villa Planchart, in Caracas. Although much has been published about Ponti’s Venezuelan project, his letters reveal other lesser known but significant encounters with Latin American culture. Using his Domus editorials and readings from his correspondence as guidelines, complemented by articles, seminal books, and projects, this article will explore, from a more plural point of view, how Ponti’s experiences and relationships developed in Latin America, especially those lesser known relationships in Brazil, helped shape some of his design processes and conceptualizations.

Envisioning a future in which machines are not merely used as tools for creating data, but also to play a role that can enhance the design process itself, this research presents as its fundamental question the possibility of employing a combinatorial use of diffusion models, associated to parametric modeling as a means of predicting, developing, and ultimately optimizing environmentally conscious design proposals. Thus, our ultimate goal is to outline a novel methodology not only capable of stimulating creativity, but also enriching critical thinking and problem-solving skills for sustainable solutions in the early stages of the design process. The strategy here called Design Intelligence Strategy, uses referential design thinking concepts and processes to generate, analyze, compare and (re)systematize data. The object of study is a small house unit with limited constraints, to be implemented in a climatic location through formally adaptive characteristics. The results indicate that the AI generated images have potential to guide the process to climateeffective solutions, besides also being able to be implemented in academic studios.

Based on the theories of parametric design thinking by Oxman (2017) and the studies by Woodbury (2010) and Romcy (2017), such strategies are based on the principle that algorithmic logic can be understood, in certain circumstances, as a procedural framework and not just an instrumental one. It will also be discussed how the situation of remote learning in the face of the COVID-19 crisis brought about the use of virtual teaching tools as an increment of the learning process.

During the 1950´s Ponti travelled extensively abroad, but it was in Latin America where he faced an architectural repertory expressed on a way which had a profound impact in his polymorphic career. While in Brazil, Venezuela and Mexico, Ponti could identify with a certain modern reasoning not only on a vernacular and local basis, but also rooted on a classical and Mediterranean one. Brought by the Europeans and local architects that studied abroad, these roots were reinterpreted locally to be the basis of some of the works of Lucio Costa in Brazil and Barragán in Mexic...

This study aims to connect procedural contents to different design strategies enrolled by students with special focus on complex geometries. The objective was to offer the necessary assistance to an appropriated design development, by reducing the habitual mishaps related to the lack of technical skills with digital tools for both the design reasoning and the subsequent graphic representation of proposals. As an answer, a new design approach called A-BIM (Algorithmic-based Building Information Modeling) was introduced to students, which integrates BIM platforms with algorithmic modelling software allowing, in this way, some formal flexibility allied to an adequate graphic documentation.

Spaces were to be reviewed through new notions on use, fluidity, and transparency, often leading to formerly compartmentalized areas occupied by bulky furniture and pre-arranged compositions being opened up. In this way, some architects started experimenting with new arrangements, not only for single-family housing, but also in new apartment building configurations. This article, therefore, takes a perspective on two different but complementary home living experiments, by comparing Gio Ponti's Via Dezza apartment (Milan, Italy) and Paulo Mendes da Rocha's Butantã house (São Paulo, Brazil). Even though they come from different backgrounds and time periods, these works are similar in some of their fundamental principles, especially regarding the way they conceive the room. While designing their own home environments, these architects were able to freely express the essence of their ideas about home liv...

The approach presented builds on the improvement of a theoretical-didactic model during three strategies, each aiming at different steps of the design process. The first one explores analog design thinking techniques on the initial concept decisions, the following demonstrates the joint use of parametric and BIM tools as an alternative resource for generating complex forms, and the last one presents BIM technology as a pedagogical instrument for learning a constructive system. Thus, besides presenting the methods, instruments, products, and results generated, this paper will also discuss the gains and difficulties faced, appointing a new approach to undergo in the future.
