Research paper thumbnail of Radiofrequency Ablation of the Pancreas: Protective Effect of Local Cooling Techniques

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been used extensively for the treatment of solid organ tumors but little is known on the efficacy and safety of pancreatic ablation. To further investigate the safety of pancreatic RFA, 18 pigs had RFA of the pancreas, close to superior mesenteric vein and duodenum. Group A (nine animals) was protected with peripancreatic cool perfusion and Group B (nine animals) with portal vein (PV) intravenous injection of cool saline. Biochemical and histological evidence suggested lateral thermal injury of the duodenal wall and superior mesenteric vein and acute pancreatitis in most animals. However, clinically and at autopsy, Group B animals fared much better. PV thrombosis, hepatic abscess, duodenal perforation, ascites, and extensive pancreatic necrosis were observed in Group A but not in Group B. The present study su...

The aim of this study was to assess the value and reliability of initial chest radiographs in diagnosing blunt diaphragmatic rupture. A retrospective analysis of initial radiographs of 18 patients with blunt diaphragmatic rupture treated at two Greek Trauma Centers was performed. The chest radiograph was the primary diagnostic radiological tool in all of cases, and the findings were confirmed at operation in all cases. The preoperative diagnosis of blunt diaphragmatic rupture on the basis of chest radiographs was made in 16 out 18 patients (89%). The presence of air-containing viscera and an elevated nasogastric tube above the level of the left hemidiaphragm were the most specific signs. Although elevation of the hemidiaphragm was seen in all 18 cases, it is non-specific. A marked elevation of the right hemidiaphragm (more than 6 cm above the level of the le...

The 'Asclepeion' of Voula Hospital covers the southeastern suburban areas of the greater Athens area (1,000,000 population). The aim of this study is to present information on the pattern of injuries in Athens, in order to understand the magnitude of the problem and develop rational prevention programmes. Specially trained health visitors of the Emergency Department Injury Surveillance System (EDISS) interviewed in person every injured victim who was brought into the Emergency Service of the 'Asclepeion' of Voula Hospital. The study was performed during a 3-year period, from 1996 to 1998; 4564 persons were interviewed. Traffic accidents were more frequent on weekdays with a seasonal peak in July and among young Greeks (aged 25 - 34 years). The usual type of injuries seen in vehicle-accident victims were cerebral contusion and concussion, while in motorcycle-accident victims, head contusion and fractures. The most common reasons for the accident were excessive speed, poor condition of road, inattention, abstraction or drowsiness and drug effects. A total of 29.8% of motorcycle drivers and 5.7% of motorcycle passengers wore a helmet and 26.3% of car drivers and 14.1% of car passengers were using seatbelts. The identification of road traffic injury patterns can contribute to the development of injury prevention measures and guide rational preventive interventions that can reduce the incidence of these injuries. The EDISS system established at 'Asclepeion' of Voula Emergency Service can provide useful and accurate information about this serious and multidimensional problem of Greek Public Health.

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) showed transsection of the aorta at the level of the isthmus and turbulent flows in several places around the aorta. We discuss the contribution of TEE for detecting traumatic injuries to the thoracic aorta.

A systematic approach toward dealing with trauma patients was facilitated through the ATLS program, which has become a milestone in trauma care. Our new ATLS course for medical students was set in motion in 2015. Our aim was to make medical students familiar with trauma patients interactively, through a program like ATLS, and here we present the results of this endeavor.MethodsA two-day ATLS-Medical Student (MS) course was offered from November 2015 to July 2018, and analysis was performed retrospectively on the data gathered over a three-month period through online questionnaires. Before graduating, 261 newly qualified medical doctors were interviewed and evaluated as part of the ATLS course.ResultsAfter the course, the vast majority of medical students (251 MSs; 96.16%) felt more capable of managing severely injured patients and 58% of students felt that th...
