Hence, this study was conducted with an objective to assess the impact of mechanization on the rice fallow pulse and to quantify the economic loss due to non-cultivation of rice fallow pulses. Multistage Stratified Random Sampling method was employed for drawing the 100 numbers of samples farm households from Kumbakonam and Orathanadu blocks of Thanjavur district.Among the various consequences, season skipping was the main consequence of heavy machinery usage in rice farming on pulses cultivation in both the study blocks. The reduction in yield of fallow pulses to the tune of more than 50 per cent was felt as the major impact of mechanization in rice farming. Farmers in both the study blocks have cited that the reduction in yield was the major i...

The aim of the study is to identify the existing value chain and create new chain in the study area. Random sampling technique was used to select 60 farmers. The result showed that, the recovery of main and by product during rice milling was 60 per cent of rice, 10 per cent of broken rice, 15 per cent of rice bran, 10 per cent of husk and 5 per cent waste from one tonne of paddy. In value chain for rice production, the share in value addition was 26.42 per cent for rice millers, 0.16 per cent Rice bran crude oil, 0.09 per cent for Rice bran refined oil, 0.05 per cent for traders, 6.41 per cent rice retailers and 0.04 per cent for rice bran refined oil retailers. In value chain for flaked rice industry, the share in value addition was 14.71, 0.28, 0.08, 0.09, 8.04 and 0.08 per cent for Flaked Rice Industry, Rice Bran Crude Oil, Rice Bran Refined Oil, traders, flaked rice retailers and rice bran refined oil retailers in channel respectively. Finally the study concluded that, the value addition in the existing value chain was ` 5096 which can be increased to ` 9530 through proposed model. Highlights m The long marketing channel which includes more intermediaries and less value addition at farmer level results in low profit to the farmers. Developing a good value chain for rice which will benefit all the stake holders in rice value chain is the need of present hour.

Medicinal plant has got importance in this scenario and the production and marketing of these medicinal plants are confined to specific locations. One such wonder plant is Glory lily (Gloriosa superba), which has got much importance in India’s export basket and earn more foreign exchange. Alkaloids extracted from this plant are used in pharmaceuticals in large. This book explores the details of economic aspects of production and marketing of Glory lilly. It contains cost and returns in production, resource use efficiency, marketing channels and price spread throughout the channels and the constraints in production and marketing were also identified. The book will be highly useful to medicinal plant researchers, producers, pharmaceutical industry, exporters and policy makers.

Seven different predominant farming systems were identified, of which the fruits and turmeric farming systems were profitable. The marginal and small farms were more diversified, whereas the large farms were specialized, with high-value crops. The productivity in all the farming systems can be enhanced up to 40% by adopting technologies such as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI), and fertigation.

We extend the internal model principle for systems with boundary control and boundary observation... more We extend the internal model principle for systems with boundary control and boundary observation, and construct a robust controller for this class of systems. However, as a consequence of the internal model principle, any robust controller for a plant with infinitedimensional output space necessarily has infinite-dimensional state space. We proceed to formulate the approximate robust output regulation problem and present a finite-dimensional controller structure to solve it. Our main motivating example is a wave equation on a bounded multidimensional spatial domain with force control and velocity observation at the boundary. In order to illustrate the theoretical results, we construct an approximate robust controller for the wave equation on an annular domain and demonstrate its performance with numerical simulations.

Research paper thumbnail of Impact of Globalization on Production and Export of Turmeric in India

The production and export performance of turmeric in India have been examined using secondary data for the period from 1974-75 to 2007-08 and exponential form of growth function has been used for the analysis. The growth in production and export of turmeric has been reported significant, because of the high demand coupled with inflation. Instability index has been worked for the production and export for preliberalization and post-liberalization periods. Instability has been observed high for production, export and prices of domestic and international markets and domestic and international prices have shown high integration. For the assessment of direction of trade, the Markov chain model has been used. The data regarding country-wise export of turmeric has shown that the previous export share retention for Indian turmeric has been high in minor importing countries (pooled under others category) (87 %), followed by UAE (49 %), Iran (41 %) and UK (35 %). The countries such as USA and Japan have not been the stable importers of Indian turmeric. The plans for export may be oriented towards these two countries and also plans should be formulated for stabilizing the export of turmeric to other countries. The farmers should be provided training on production of a quality product.
