This biodiversity status holds promising biotechnological potential. Marine organisms are important sources of novel chemical species, with applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical, and nutraceutical fields. However, ecological pressures derived from anthropogenic actions, including the bioaccumulation of potentially toxic elements and microplastics, impact promising species. This review describes the current status of the biotechnological and environmental aspects of seaweeds and corals from the Brazilian coast, including publications from the last 5 years (from January 2018 to December 2022). The search was conducted in the main public databases (PubChem, PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar) and in the Espacenet database (European Patent Office—EPO) and the Brazilian National Property Institute (INPI). Bioprospecting studies were reported for seventy-one sea...

In addition, the multi-element composition of the leaves, bark and stems (heartwood) of A. inundata was evaluated using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). Lupenone was isolated in the petroleum ether extract of leaves, for the first time. Biological assays were conducted to evaluate the antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic) of extracts, their fractions and lupenone. The results showed antimicrobial and antileishmanial activity of these compounds, which may be useful for obtaining a chemical composition and biological activity database on Albizia species. For multi-element composition, we found the mean concentrations (minimum-maximum) of Al, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, V and Zn in the samples ranged between 0.06 and 265.41 μg g-1. Concentration ranges of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn are large, which makes these samples as additional sources of these macronutrients.

In this study, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) was used for multi-element analysis (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mg, Pb, Se and Zn) after microwave-assisted digestion, to evaluate the effect of furosemide (loop diuretic) on the composition of these essential and toxic elements in biological samples (liver, kidney, heart, lung and serum) of Wistar rats. Male and female Wistar rats (n = 40, 180-350 g) were randomly divided into 2 groups (n = 20/group). The results were expressed as μg/g dry weight. The mean tissue concentrations (minimum-maximum in μg/g) of Cu, Fe, Mg and Zn in the biological samples ranged between 5.2 and 1023.5. The levels of Cd, Pb and Se were below the detection limit of the ICP OES. Accuracy was assessed by microwave-assisted digestion and recovery values of 83-116% were obtained. Liver had significantly higher tra...

The variables of the hydride generation system, such as pre-reduction time, hydrochloric acid concentration and sodium tetrahydroborate concentration, were evaluated using full factorial design at two levels and Doehlert design. After optimized experimental conditions, the method allowed the determination of antimony with limits of detection and quantification of 9 and 30 ng L-1 , respectively. The precision (RSD) of the method was < 5% and the accuracy was confirmed by the analysis of certified reference material (SLRS-4, River water for trace metals). The method was successfully applied for inorganic antimony speciation in water samples collected in Salvador City, Bahia State, Brazil. In mineral water, total Sb concentrations ranged from 0.26 to 0.30 µg L-1 , whereas the concentrations of Sb III were below 0.03 µg L-1. On the other hand, in natural surface waters, the quantifiable concentration of total Sb and Sb III ranged from 0.41 to 1.23 µg L-1 and 0.23 to 1.04 µg L-1 , respectively. The highest average concentrations of Sb were obtained in regions with the largest urban influence, ratifying the anthropogenic impact in water bodies.

In Brazil, tetracyclines are available as generic and similar products. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro release of tetracycline capsules (500 mg) and doxycycline tablets (100 mg) in different reaction media, from dissolution profiles, using sensitive and rapid ultraviolet spectrophotometric methods. The dissolution test was used to obtain and compare dissolution profiles and establish similarities of pharmaceutical formulations in compliance with the Brazilian (for tetracycline hydrochloride capsules) and United States (USP) (for doxycycline hydrochloride tablets) pharmacopoeia. For both drugs, the dissolution studies were conducted using an USP type 2 apparatus at 75 rpm with 1000 mL distilled water at 37.0 ± 0.5 ºC for 90 minutes, to evaluate the influence of pH (1.0-8.0) on the release of drugs. The methods were validated, showing precision, linearity, and accuracy. All the products satisfactorily released tetracycline and doxycycline, with at least 80% of the drug dissolved within 30 minutes. Tetracycline and doxycycline are weak acids, which favors their dissolution in acid media (pH range 1.0-6.0). This research contributes to studies that guarantee the quality control of tetracyclines and to the expansion of the novel methodologies established by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia for doxycycline.

The enzyme enoyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) reductase present in a limiting step in the biosynthesis of fatty acids type II was used to search for novel molecules with potential inhibitor by virtual screening techniques. A flavonoid library obtained in ChEMBL database (n = 4,008) was filtered through physico-chemical similarity using the Euclidean distance as a criterion. The selected molecules were subjected to molecular docking using the scoring function GridScore in the DOCK 6.5 software. The top 30 ranked molecules by molecular docking were submitted to the AuPosSOM 2.1 software with the aim of clustering molecules by means of intermolecular interactions in order to understand the patterns of these interactions with enoyl-ACP reductase from Plasmodium falciparum (PfENR). We observed the importance of flavonoid moiety to hydrophobic interactions with the active site of enzyme, this confirmed the choice to study this metabolite class as PfENR inhibitors. Moreover, it was possible to recognize which intermolecular interactions contribute to the molecular recognition process.
