Research paper thumbnail of THE ROLE OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES TOWARDS THE PERFECT PRODUCT IN THE COSMETICS AND TOILETRIES INDUSTRY

Computer aided engineering (CAE) technologies offer the potential to bring newer, better products... more Computer aided engineering (CAE) technologies offer the potential to bring newer, better products to market in a shorter time with lower production costs, providing competitive and financial advantages in a mature and competitive market such as cosmetics. One particular technology that has proven very useful in this respect is an engineering tool known as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which is used to reduce experimentation and testing by allowing for virtual experimentation or prototyping prior to pilot testing or physical experiments. Case studies are presented illustrating the use of CFD for optimization of industrial process operation and troubleshooting of unit operations in process lines. Results of CFD virtual experiments are also presented demonstrating the use of this technology to gain insight into the performance of hair and skin products. Motivation for Deployment of CAE Technology in the Cosmetics Industry The worldwide cosmetics and toiletries market was estimated at more than US$200 billion in 2003, with an annual growth rate of about 5%(1,2). Comparatively newer markets like China and India are developing faster. In the western world, tactics like product differentiation based on finer age groups, sex, race and specific skin, and hair conditions within each market segment also assisted growth. More importantly, technological innovations and continuing development of the upper mass-market segment influenced growth. Recently, national retailer chains in North America have been making more aggressive ad campaigns to attract specific group of consumers. For example, the August 22, 2005 issue of New Yorker had only a single advertiser - Target Inc. However, product innovation within the context of these growth drivers remains central to success in the global cosmetics and toiletries industry. This is especially important in a mature market such as the US, where the spiraling impact of a weak labor market has reduced consumer confidence and prices have been driven down through intense competition amongst

One way for chemical manufacturers to ensure profitability in the current environment is to foster innovation through the use of advanced modeling techniques. The Chemical Industry Vision2020 Technology Partnership 1 highlights opportunities to address several challenges in the chemical industry through shared pre-competitive research and development activities in many technology areas, and offers a special focus on high-end modeling. In this paper we examine the available technologies in the chemical industry and highlight several areas where major advances have been achieved through innovation fostered by advanced modeling of industrial processes.
