Although, if same balanced translocation gets inherited then it gives rise to normal child. We report a case of non-consanguineous couple with the history of spontaneous abortion with bilateral dysplastic kidney in the foetus. Karyotyping of husband was normal and wife showed autosomal balanced translocation between q arm (11) of chromosome 1 and p arm (11.1) of chromosome 2. After doing genetic counselling for prenatal diagnosis, couple underwent prenatal diagnosis by chorionic villous and amniotic culture in two pregnancies respectively. In the first pregnancy, the female foetus inherited same translocation which mother carried and in the second pregnancy, male foetus inherited normal chromosomes from mother. Genetic counselling was done during both the pregnancies and couples continued the pregnancy. Inheritance of balanced translocation an...

Fetuses without any external and internal pathology or anomaly were included in this study. Fetuses were divided into seven groups based on gestational ages as follows: first group 13-16 weeks, second group 17-20 weeks, third group 21-24 weeks, fourth group 25-28 weeks, fifth group 29-32 weeks, sixth group 33-36 weeks and seventh group 37-40 weeks. The dimensions (length, width, thickness and weight) of the fetal thyroid glands were determined by vernier caliper instrument. The dimensions and ratios of the fetal thyroid gland (weight/fetal body weight) were evaluated. The dimensions of fetal thyroid glands increased with gestational age. This study gives knowledge of thyroid growth differentiation in different gestational ages.

The eyeball begins to develop at 4th week of gestation and at term, the eyeball is relatively well developed compared to the rest of the body. There have been very few studies on the morphological development of the eyeball during foetal life. So the aim of the present study was to measure the dimensions of the eyeball of human foetuses from 13 weeks to 40 weeks of gestational age. The anteroposterior, transverse and vertical diameters of eyeball were measured by using vernier calliper in 112 eyeballs from 56 foetuses. All the diameters of eyeball increases as gestational age increases linearly up to the 32 weeks after 33 weeks the diameters were increases but slower. The antero-posterior diameters of eyeball were greater than transverse and vertical diameter.

The complex embryological development of vascular system often results in myriad of clinically relevant variations. Variation in the origin of right vertebral artery was found in 70-year-old female embalmed cadaver during routine dissection of neck in the department of anatomy. It was originating from right common carotid artery and its further course was as usual. Origin and course of left vertebral artery showed no variation. Such type of variation is encountered very rarely. Awareness of such variations in origin is surgically important and clinically significant during diagnostic and interventional angiographic procedures.

Translocation is one of the structural chromosomal aberrations where exchange of genetic material between the chromosomes is seen because of two breakpoints. On the basis of involvement of type of chromosome, two different types of translocation are defined. A case of two-year-old girl child with the history of developmental delay, generalised hypotonia and recurrent infections was reported whose cytogenetic analysis showed additional genetic material on ‘p’ arm of one chromosome 6. To find out the additional genetic material, parental chromosomal study was done which revealed balanced translocation between ‘q’ arm of chromosome 10 and ‘p’ arm of chromosome 6 and normal chromosomal pattern in father. Balanced translocation in mother gave rise to formation of derivative chromosome 6 which was transmitted to daughter causing partial t...

It leads to difficulty in speech and feeding, especially in new-borns. Genetic and nongenetic factors may lead to OFCs. An association of OFC to genetic cause was assessed in the study. Methodology: Conventional karyotyping was done in 133 patients of all the age groups with OFCs (syndromic and nonsyndromic) to find out chromosomal aberrations (CAs) in OFCs, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, MGM Dental College, Navi Mumbai directed patients to cytogenetic laboratory. Project was started after taking consent and ascent from the patient and institutional ethical approval. Results: The incidence of CAs is 2.2%, and polymorphic variations are 3.7%. Out of 133 patients 47, XXY was seen in one case and trisomy 21 was seen in two cases, polymorphic variations like pericentric inversion in chromosome 9, 16qh + and 22 pstk + were observed in one case each and 9qh+ was seen in two cases. Conclusion: The incidence of genetic involvement in terms of CAs and polymorphic variations to OFC is low. The application of molecular technique in patients with OFC will help to find out genetic involvement. Genetic counseling and precise prenatal diagnosis will prevent the incidence of OFC.

Retinal neurogenesis commences from the layers of optic cup, which forms from optic vesicle. Progenitor cells are the tissue-specific cells which give rise to all different types of retinal cells. Progenitor cells in fetal retina proliferate at specific time during development of retina. Knowledge of the highest proliferative capacity interval of progenitor cells will be valuable for transplantation. Material and Methods: Twenty-eight fetuses of spontaneous abortions of 13th–40th week were collected from MGM Hospital after ethical and scientific approval of the institute. After fixation of fetuses, eyeballs were extracted and fixed in buffer solution. Sections were taken and the retina was treated with Ki-67 immunohistochemistry marker to observe proliferative capacity of retinal progenitor cells (RPCs). Seven groups (A to G) of 4 weeks were made and observations of each group were noted. Results: It was observed that the highest proliferative capacity of RPCs was in B group (17–20 weeks) and the highest proliferative capacity of RPCs was maximum at 19th week of gestation. Discussion and Conclusion: Characteristics of progenitor cells in retina are well studied. Their highest proliferation period can be utilized to make the procedure of transplantation more refined.
