Currently, its use as a therapeutic aid has been rediscovered along with its association with other specialized imaging. The aim of this paper is to highlight such advancements in the field of ultrasonography. Key words: Ultrasonography, Therapeutic USG, Dentistry

Research paper thumbnail of Sonographic appearance of cysticercosis of the masseter muscle: A case report

The larvae form cysts commonly in brain, meninges, and eyes, which together constitute 86% of cases with remainder located in the muscles, heart, lungs, and peritoneum. Cases in the maxillofacial region, including tongue and cheek muscles are rare. We report a rare case of cysticercosis involving right masseter muscle presenting as a facial swelling, diagnosed on the basis of fine-needle aspiration cytology and high-resolution ultrasonography and managed conservatively.

This report describes a unique case of unilateral fusion of primary mandibular lateral incisor and canine and discusses the possible future treatment options anticipated for management of fused deciduous teeth. Clinically, this case provides an insight into management options for fused deciduous teeth for general dental practitioners. [Table/Fig-1]: Anterior view showing fused primary right mandibular lateral incisor and canine. [Table/Fig-2]: Palatal view showing initial carious lesion. [Table/Fig-3]: Periapical radiograph showing fused primary lateral incisor and canine with notching in the incisal 1/3 rd with congenitally missing permanent lateral incisor.

Research paper thumbnail of Salivary Flow Rate, pH and Buffering Capacity in Pregnant and Non Pregnant Women - A Comparative Study

Sample and design: The present study was a comparison between 30 pregnant women in their third trimester and 30 non pregnant women, in the age group of 19-34 years. Method: The salivary flow, pH, and buffering capacity was measured using Saliva-check BUFFER kit (GC Corporation). Both unstimulated and paraffin stimulated saliva was measured for 5 min by asking the subjects to spit passively into a measuring jar provided in the kit. Main outcome measures: The pH and buffering capacity of unstimulated saliva was measured using a pH and buffering strips provided in the kit. Results: Unpaired Student t test showed a statically significant increase in the salivary flow and a decrease in the pH and buffering capacity in the pregnant group when compare to the non pregnant group. Conclusion: The increase in the salivary flow rate in pregnant women could be attributed to the increase in the estrogen and progesterone concentration during pregnancy. The decrease in the pH and buffer capacity was due to the decrease in the plasma HCO 3 ion concentration and an increase in  amylase concentration during pregnancy.

Ultrasound is a useful noninvasive imaging modality in the assessment of cervical lymph nodes. The morphology of lymph nodes is evaluated by grey-scale sonography and the power Doppler sonography helps in the assessment the vasculature of lymph nodes. Tuberculous lymphadenitis exhibits distinctive features like presence of adjacent soft tissue edema and matting of nodes. This article highlights the use of ultrasonographic as a diagnostic approach, by comparing and differentiating the features of tubercular lymph nodes in a 10-year-old female patient.

Osteolysis of the jaws has been reported in association with infection, cysts, neoplasia, and metabolic, endocrine, or hematologic abnormalities. Rare cases of idiopathic osteolysis have also been recorded. A detailed review from various peer reviewed journals has been discussed in this article. To discuss the demographic distribution and possibilities of pathogenesis of Gorham-Stout syndrome. A case report of vanishing bone disease of the mandible in a 60 year old female patient has been discussed. A detail review of literature highlighting the demographic distribution and pathogenesis of vanishing bone disease has been made. Thirty eight percentages of these lesions appear in older individuals with a slight male predilection. 68.6% of the oro-facial massive osteolysis occurs in mandible has been reported. Variable etiopathogenesis such as vascular proliferation, increased levels of circulating cytokines and circulatory disturbances have been associated with this disease. The Gorham-Stout syndrome though rarely seen in the facial skeleton, it is important to consider it in the differential diagnosis of osteolytic lesions of the jaws.
