Reasons for using literary texts in foreign language classroom and main criteria for selecting suitable literary texts in foreign language classes are stressed so as to make the reader familiar with the underlying reasons and criteria for language teachers' using and selecting literary texts. Moreover, literature and the teaching of language skills, benefits of different genres of literature (i.e. poetry, short fiction, drama and novel) to language teaching and some problems encountered by language teachers within the area of teaching English through literature (i.e. lack of preparation in the area of literature teaching in TESL / TEFL programs, absence of clear-cut objectives defining the role of literature in ESL / EFL, language teachers' not having the background and training in literature, lack of pedagogically-designed appropriate materials that can be used by language teachers in a classroom context) are taken into account.

One-hundred and four essays were collected and assessed by two interraters, but only 64 essays statistically qualified as the corpus of the study. Halliday and Hasan (1976) concept of grammatical cohesion was used as framework for the analysis of the essays. Reference had the highest frequency which is 90.67% of the total cohesive devices with mean score 53.37. Conjunction occurred 326 times in the essays, which is 9.08% with mean score 5.34 while substitution was the least used type of cohesive device which is only 0.25%. The cohesive devices are not significantly correlated with the quality of the students' essay. The resulting r using Pearson r is-0.054 which is not significant at 05 level of significance. Based on the qualitative analysis, it was found out that certain cohesive types assisted the students in the argumentation process. For instance, the use of adversative conjunctions helped the students establish counterclaims. However, 'but' is the most frequently used adversative conjunction by the students which may signify that their knowledge on the use of this kind of cohesive device is limited. There were instances where the students can use concessive like "yet or however" to establish stronger claims. Hence, qualitative analysis supports the concept of form and function. In the students' argumentative essays, certain forms were chosen over the others for a specific purpose that supports the overall objective of an argumentative text.

The purpose of this article is to show how it is possible to bridge the divide between language and literature by using the analytical techniques available within this sub-discipline of language study. Stylistics aims to interconnect linguistic form and literary effect, and also account for what it is that readers respond to when they praise the quality of a particular piece of writing. This article attempts to depict how the knowledge of linguistic intricacies can affect the reader's interpretation. It also discusses how linguistic form relates to literary effect by analysing "Domination of Black", by the renowned American poet Wallace Stevens. We aim to show that a linguistic approach to the analysis of a literary text does not have to mean that interpretation is disregarded. On the contrary, stylistic analysis can often illuminate why a particular literary text is regarded so highly.
