The role of pretend play interactions in stimulating social and emotional competence was examined... more The role of pretend play interactions in stimulating social and emotional competence was examined by comparing the quality of pretend and nonpretend social play. The relation between social involvement in pretense and the expression of psychosocial issues was also assessed. Ss were 12 4-yr-old girls and 12 6-yr-old girls, paired with a familiar peer. Ss participated in 2 videotaped 30-min free-play sessions. Results show that pretend play sequences involved more complex, mutually responsive, and emotionally invested social interaction than nonpretend sequences. Expression of psychosocial issues within pretense was fostered by engagement in highly coordinated as opposed to less socially involved pretend play. The socioaffective and emotional mastery skills enhanced by coordinated pretense in the transition from preschool to school age are discussed. As expected, girls" academic performance averaged higher than boys'. Path analysis confirmed initial hypotheses that girls" advantage is partially due to their characteristic of greater responsiveness to social cues and compliance with adult direction. This advantage was partially offset in this model by boys'greater visual-spatial skill, which also was a predictor of academic success. Access to stereotypic masculine toys and activities at home was, for both sexes, a predictor of children's visual-spatial ability. As expected, socioeconomic variables, including mothers" occupation and fathers" level of education, also influenced the environmental social and cognitive factors predicting academic success. These results indicate that boys" and girls" differential development of specific cognitive and social skills may play an important role in establishing sex differences in academic performance.

Recent research, however, has found evidence of generativity even in adolescence. This longitudinal study explored the associations between caregiving in friendships, closely related to intimacy, and early generative concern in a young adolescent sample. Given the importance of close friendships in adolescence, it was hypothesized that responsive caregiving in early adolescent friendships would predict later generative concern. Approximately 140 adolescents (56 % female, aged 14 at Time 1) completed questionnaires regarding generative concern and responsive caregiving with friends yearly across 2 years. Structural equation modeling revealed that caregiving predicted generative concern 1 year later but generative concern did not predict later caregiving. These results suggest that caregiving in close friendships plays an important role in the development of adolescents' motivation to contribute to future generations.

There were no sign(flcant differences in IQ (Binet or Baylev Scales) between placebo and phenobarbital groups after eight to 12 months of therapy. However. detrimental effects of phenobarbital were found in memory, .for which serum level &fluenced scores, and in comprehension, in that length of treatment time affected performance. Hyperactivity was not seen. Behavioral changes, reported by parents, were increased filssiness and a characteristic disturbance of sleep. These changes varied in severi(y and were classified as transient, dose related, or unacceptable. After 12 months in the study, most parents couM not distinguish between phenobarbital and placebo. Our data s~)ggest that although most toddlers do not have major side effects :from phenobarbital therapy when treated for a year. serum levels and length of time on phenobarbital shouM be kept at a minimum to reduce negative cognitive and behavioral e~ects.
