Research methods. The research is based on the following scientific methods: analytical, systematical, reconstructive, historical-attributive, typological, contextual, comparative and generalizing, which helped to determine the peculiarities of the historical formation and functioning of art institutions in Kyiv over three-decade period, to investigate the state of study of this topic and to structure various types and forms of art institutions, adding the new ones that still have not become the part of scientific discourse. The results. Kyiv at the time of independence witnessed a great activity of art institutions. They had a different scale of activity and a different degree of influence on the local artistic environment, on the art market, on the culture of the country in general, speeding up at the same time the processes that were gradually taking place in the West. They often went beyond the professional environment, influencing social behavior, and sometimes forming new habits, ethical and aesthetic perception of the entire society. Some of them in particular had an educational function, deepening the knowledge of the general public about their own history and culture. In addition, the activities of art institutions contributed to the formation of national identity awareness. Conclusions. As a result of the analysis, those institutions that had more impact on the development of art from the 1980s to 2020 were emphasized; it was stated that in a relatively short period of time, an actively functioning capitalist model in the field of culture and art, having its own characteristics and challenges, made it possible to integrate into the current world art context.

Art infrastructure, as a guarantee of a successful development of culture and various artistic pr... more Art infrastructure, as a guarantee of a successful development of culture and various artistic practices, is developing in Ukraine at the intersection of public and private sectors. It successfully combines two models of «Anglo-Saxon» funding for culture (private, philanthropic or corporate) and «Continental Europe» (when support comes from the state and funding resourse is the budget of the city or country). The distinguishing feature of the local artscene is that most museums are state-owned, while galleries and contemporary art centers belong to private sector. At the moment, the largest private institution in Ukraine is the PinchukArtCentre (PAC). Conceived in 2002 as a future museum of contemporary art, by 2006 it was transformed into the Center of Contemporary Art with the permanent location in Kyiv, on Baseina street. PAC was founded as part of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation-«Contemporary Art in Ukraine». For almost fifteen years of its existence, the PAC has become the open platform that, according to its founder, is a tool for shaping pro-Western, critical thinking in the society. Considering a similar task of art policy in a global context, we can say that it is not so much in education, but in building a dialogue which yields a new knowledge [1, p. 102]. Culture is created, accumulated and broadcast by real people, institutions and organizations. Especially in the institutional environment «in the face» of social institutions and facilities, traditions, values, norms and attitudes of public consciousness are reflected, which preserve, reproduce and transmit them in society [2]. In case of the PAC, the emphasis was on the transformation of the values rather than simply on their transmission within the local national community. During the first stages, even before the appearance of the exhibition site, a collection of contemporary Ukrainian art began to form. The gallery owner-M. Gelman, artist-O. Royburd, curator-O. Solovyov, French curator-N. Burrio and O. Barovsky (from the Museum of Russian Art in St. Petersburg) were involved in this work at different times. In addition, from the

It has always had its own peculiarities. Traditions of avant-garde, constructivism, later underground, the phenomenon of Kharkiv photography, a strong school of design, etc., have determined the development of artistic thought and artistic environment of the city over the past century. After the collapse of the Soviet system, Kharkiv witnessed the transformation of the art system: the development of a new type of art infrastructure, the emergence of a number of art associations and gallery spaces. Over the following decades, new generations of artists appeared on the stage, various initiatives emerged, and the needs of the art community changed, prompting the emergence of new institutions. Their activity and influence on the professional environment are an important part of the history of contemporary art in Kharkiv. The article considers the features of the first private galleries that emerged in the early 1990s, which conditionally can be divided into commercial and non-commercial ones. This convention was caused by the state of the newly emerging art market. The study also investigates which institutions had an impact on the artistic environment in the following decades, and especially those institutions that remained active for a long time with consistent project activity (Municipal Gallery, YermilovCenter, etc.). The contribution of a number of online information platforms, which, by covering art events, help art to be more visible in the context of modern urban culture is also analyzed. Thus, the present article is an attempt to illustrate the dynamics of artistic life in Kharkiv over the past three decades through the prism of art institutions. After all, they did not exist separately, were not a parallel phenomenon, but served as a bridge that united the artist and his works with the audience. In addition, it is important to outline the challenges that exist today and to understand what can be an obstacle in the way of active development of both the institutional and modern artistic environment of Kharkiv.

This gave impetus to development of a number of youth initiatives, creative associations and galleries. The pluralism of the artistic community that contributed to the emergence of associations of different artistic (and not only) values, was outlined. The influence of individuals, artists and curators (on the formation of a new art system, as an alternative controlled by the Union of Artists of the USSR) was analyzed. The activity of the twenty-first century art institutions, their features and projects were studied that enabled discovering the patterns of the present-day development of the art infrastructure of Lviv.

Its characteristics, conventional to Europe at the end of the 18th century, became common to most countries by the second half of the 19th century. Globalization processes that accompany the entire history of the previous century are the key factor of the rapid changes in society, including the art sphere. The role of global economic changes with the orientation on the society of consumption, on the growing importance of art market, commercialization of culture in general, emergence of new technologies and changes in attitudes to contemporary art in all its manifestations were observed. The reasons for shifting the emphasis and rethinking the role of artist, curator and spectator in the modern mode of existence of art institutions were analyzed.
