Drawing on transaction theory of stress (Cooper, Dewe, & O'Driscoll, 2001) and information systems (IS) continuance theory (Bhattacherjee, 2001) we investigate the effects of technostress on employee intentions to extend the use of ICT at work. Our results show that factors that create and inhibit technostress affect both employee satisfaction with the use of ICT and employee intentions to extend the use of ICT. Our findings have important implications for the management of technostress with regard to both individual stress levels and organizational performance. A key implication of our research is that managers should implement strategies for coping with technostress through the theoretical concept of technostress inhibitors.

Our insights whether the use of such systems improves decision-making are, however, still modest. In particular, there has been little research on the effects of DSS use on strategic decision-making. This paper focuses on experienced managers'/analysts' use of a custom-built DSS in a strategic, real-life situation. We report on an exploratory study, where a management team in a large oil company evaluated the consequences for the company of a critical market event, first without and then with the DSS. It was found that use of the DSS implied a shift in the direction of more rational decision-making, but also a focus on the system variables only.

The information systems (IS) success approach, proposed by DeLone and McLean (1992, 2003), constitutes the theoretical framework for the conceptualization of IS success. This implies that user satisfaction and perceived usefulness are utilized as criterion variables. 161 tourism employees from ten car and passenger ...

Measurement is critical to evaluate relationships between initiatives to support learning and organisational performance. This paper proposes a theory-based tool kit for measurement of organisational learning. By tool kit we mean a collection of methods that each captures elements of the phenomenon 'organisational learning'. The paper clarifies the term and discusses requirements of theories and methods to be included in the tool kit. Some examples of theories with methods are given. Emphasis is placed on Kelly's Personal Construct Theory with the accompanying Role Construct Repertory Test to illustrate methodological requirements.

To handle this research challenge we first clarify the concept of managerial team learning. Then, we present an example of an equilibrium model, VisualGas, which has been developed to help managers in

The spreadsheet modelling section was part of a compulsory 7.5 ECTS introductory course on business data processing. In the pretest of our quasi-experiment, conducted at the beginning of the course, we asked the students to hand in their answer to a spreadsheet task. The task was voluntary, and 31% of the students (N=117) submitted their model or an empty spreadsheet. The results showed that around 90% of the students lacked basic technical spreadsheet skills, and that they did not know how to structure a spreadsheet so that their model was useful for decision support. The posttest, conducted at the end of the spreadsheet modelling section, showed that more than 90% of the same students (N=117) had acquired basic spreadsheet skills and managed to model a similar task in the spreadsheet according to princ...

The technological improvements of the software are particularly related to the integration of the maintenance and procurement processes, the exchange of real-time data between the main office and the vessels – and the development of a historical account of operations. Our findings show that the short-term effects of the new system on the maintenance and procurement processes are mainly timesaving informational effects because the managers and officers share the same views of data. Transformational effects, such as shorter cycles for handling supplies to the vessels, may reduce downtime. Our findings indicate several long-term effects, as well, such as improved decision making due to better data. These effects may include the development of “best practices” for daily maintenance and fuel consumption. The short-term effects on organisational effectivene...

Requirements for cause mapping for such a purpose are discussed, and our approach to theory-driven construction and analysis of cause maps is proposed. Use of the approach for advising managers is illustrated with an example from shipping investments. Research challenges are highlighted.

Self-service BI is an approach to data analytics that is supposed to enable business users to catch, prepare and analyse corporate and environmental data without the involvement of computer specialists. The current literature on self-service BI emphasises the design of new functionalities and user-friendly features. There is little discussion of the qualifications needed to apply the new functionalities purposefully in decision processes. We report on an analysis of 70 bachelor-student groups’ application of a “user-friendly” self-service BI system. We found a significant relationship between the students’ knowledge of data modelling and their ability to apply the system. Inconsistencies in the development of a data cube based on various sources led to serious errors when the data were ana...

The paper extends the current literature by focusing on management processes and by distinguishing among types of information systems. The analysis shows that databases, computerised models, data communication and integrated systems can support management functions in complementary ways, but also that information systems by themselves cannot generate competitive advantages. However, information systems that are deeply embedded in a firm’s management processes can enhance managers’ understanding of environmental changes and increase their capacity to generate and implement strategies to handle such changes more effectively. Furthermore, they can support a continuous learning process to adapt operations effectively and efficiently to a changing environment. Such systems are unique, imperfectly imitable and not mobile. Thus, the bundling of management resources wit...

However, incomplete understanding of how to manage the organisational change process may seriously prevent the successful implementation of enterprise systems, such as ERP systems. This paper reviews the literature on critical success factors (CSFs) for implementation of ERP projects. The purpose is to evaluate whether the current literature gives satisfactory advice to managers, particularly as regards the management of changes in users' work processes. We conclude by highlighting supposed weaknesses in the current body of knowledge and propose areas for future research.

We report on two experiments, one using verbal protocols and one including eye tracking as methods for data collection. Compared to previous studies, our experiments were characterised by complex tasks with a requirement for accuracy (problem tasks) and by allowing our subjects to use decision aids. We found that decision-makers used both verbal and perceptual processes to handle the task. Furthermore, we found that the subjects needed both tables and graphs to support their decision-processes. The tables facilitated the subjects' calculations, while the graphs gave overviews when studying the trends in the development of the solutions.

A distinction is made between cognitive and behavioural learning. Cognitive learning can take place both at the individual and team levels, and is considered a prerequisite for behavioural learning in complex tasks. The paper demonstrates that information systems may enhance cognitive learning. Furthermore, the paper addresses how information systems may support behavioural learning at the organisational level, i.e. enhance performance.
