This injury can occur in yearlings and compromise its carriers by reinjury or even impossibility to return to athletic life. In spite of the long period required for tendon repair, the scar tissue presents lack of elasticity and stiffness. As current treatment strategies produce only marginal results, there has been great interest in research of therapies that influence the quality or the speed of tendon repair. Stem cell therapy has shown promising results in degenerative diseases and cases of deficient healing processes. This study aims to evaluate the influence of autologous mesenchymal bone marrow stem cells in tendon healing, comparing treated and non-treated tendons. Superficial digital flexor tendonitis lesions were induced by collagenase infiltration in both forelimbs of 6 horses, followed by autologous implant in one of the forelimbs of each animal. The horses were evaluated using clinical, ultrasonographic, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical parameters. Tendon biopsies were performed at Day 48. Results found in the treatment group, such as high inflammatory cells infiltration, extracellular matrix synthesis, reduced amount of necrosis areas, small increase in cellular proliferation (KI-67/MIB-1), and low immunoreactivity to transforming growth factor β1, suggested the acceleration of tendon repair in this group. Further studies should be conducted in order to verify the influence of this treatment on later phases of tendon repair. Overall, after analysis of the results, we can conclude that cellular therapy with the mononuclear fraction of bone marrow has accelerated tendon repair at 48 days after treatment.

Fifteen Brazilian Sport horses were divided into two groups: Group I with 7 animals in physical training complementary to the standard training at the Brazilian Army's Riding School; and Group II with 8 animals in standard training used in the Brazilian Army's Riding School. Complementary training was performed on a treadmill on an inclined plane. Ultrasonographic images were taken at the beginning and at the end of training. The left thoracic and pelvic limbs of horses were evaluated for echogenicity values and cross-sectional areas of the superficial digital flexor tendons (SDFTs) and deep digital flexor tendons (DDFTs) in zones IA, IIB, and IIIB. The mean areas of the SDFT were 93.7 mm 2 and 95.8 mm 2 at the beginning and the end of training, respectively. The cross-sectional area of DDFT increased from 124.6 mm 2 at the beginning of training to 136.8 mm 2 at the end of training. The echogenicity values of both tendons were between 0 and 1 as expected, concluding that clinically, the animals showed adaptation to the exercise protocol with no signs of tendon injury being detected, implying that traditional training and complementary training are safe.

The transducers can provide greater frequency and therefore the image has better resolution. This makes it possible to analyze structures that weren’t detailed before, generating the need for constant updating of knowledge about their normal standard. This study aims to detail the ultrasound examination of the metacarpophalangeal joint of Polo horses and get reference values for the physiological pattern of soft tissue structures in the region. For this, were examined the forelimbs of 18 adult horses, male and female, weighing 350 to 480 kg and age of four to 12 years. The horses were all regular practitioners of Polo and had no complaint of lameness or other signs of injury to the locomotor system. Structures that are often studied as the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) and deep digital flexor tendon (TFDP) were examined, as the structures of less attention in the literature as the joint capsule (CA), its dorsal fold (Vilo or Villus) and the collateral ligaments. The cross-sectional area were SDFT - 1.23 cm2; TFDP - 1.58 cm2; TEDC - 0.48 cm2; L SUS-RL - 1.16 cm2; SUS L-RM - 1.26 cm2; SES R L - 0.65 cm2; L SES OM - 0.29 cm2; SES L OL - 0.26 cm2. In the longitudinal data we found the following: LAP 0, 40cm, CA - 0.84 cm; Vilo - 0.62 cm, L COL-M - 0.46 cm; LCOL-L - 0.44 cm; BFSD - 0.78 cm. Data were compared with those published in the literature, where similarities were found in studies with jumping horses. But there were found discrepancies as the difference in thickness of the villus. Another factor was related with structures pairs, that showed the medial branches always a little larger than the lateral branches. On based on this, we concluded that it is necessary to study the physiological pattern of joint structures of different types of equestrian activities and understand the differences between them. Only then can it be done a reliable ultrasound scan and as well as its clinical interpretation.

This study investigated the presence of respiratory problems in apparently healthy Thoroughbred racehorses in training. According to the Revised Consensus Statement on Inflammatory Airway Diseases of Horses (2016), determining the prevalence of respiratory disorders in different equine populations is fundamental for understanding these diseases. In total, 72 clinically sound Thoroughbred racehorses, in training at the Brazilian Jockey Club (JCB), were initially examined using interpleural pressure measurement by ventigraphy and respiratory endoscopy. When secretions were present in the airways, transendoscopic tracheal aspiration was performed, and the sample was sent for cytology. The main findings included a combination of bronchospasm and tracheal secretions with 61% of the cytology slides showing neutrophil counts ≥20%. Overall, a significant number of the horses displayed signs suggestive of inf...
