This thesis studies the cost- and non-cost competitiveness of China and its impacts on the rest of the world between 1970 and 2012. I show that the promotion of religious freedom went hand in hand with the rise of the United States as a global power. The critiques raised specific questions about the distinctiveness of the American project and its underlying Christian motivations as well as broader ones on methodological and theoretical issues. Among other things, I argue that, despite its questionable origins, the promotion of religious freedom need not be discarded.

However, patients with serious infections frequently present with normal vital signs and there has been an increased interest to include other variables such as symptoms in screening tools to detect sepsis. The majority of patients with sepsis arrive to the emergency department by emergency medical services. Our hypothesis was that the presentation of sepsis, including symptoms, may differ between patients arriving to the emergency department by emergency medical services and patients arriving by other means. This information is of interest to adapt future sepsis screening tools to the population in which they will be implemented. The aim of the current study was to compare the prevalence of keywords reflecting the clinical presentation of sepsis based on mode of arrival among septic patients presenting to the emergency department. Since patients with serious infections frequently present with normal vital signs there is a need for other variables to be included to detect sepsis. As a first step, it is essential to understand the clinical presentation of septic patients. The aim was to compare the prevalence of keywords reflecting the clinical presentation of sepsis and mode of arrival, among septic patients presenting to the emergency department. Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study of 479 adult septic patients. Keywords reflecting sepsis presentation upon emergency department arrival were quantified and analyzed based on mode of arrival, i.e. by emergency medical services or by other means. We adjusted for multiple comparisons by applying Bonferroni-adjusted significance levels for all comparisons. Adjustments for age, gender and sepsis severity were performed by stratification. All patients were admitted to the emergency d...

Smith's new book The Rise and Decline of American Religious Freedom. In this review, I consider the uses of history in Religion Clause jurisprudence and question the need for deep origins in excavating the origins of the American principles of separation of church and state and freedom of conscience. Subsequently, I evaluate Smith’s argument that the Supreme Court ended the golden age of American religious freedom when it put a thumb onto the scale and transformed religious freedom questions and answers into hard constitutional law. I argue that these decisions are as responsible for the remarkable religious pluralism that exists in American society today as much as for the contemporary secular extremism that Smith deplores. In the last part of the essay, I pose a brief account of history and judicial review as two technologies of constraint with a particular view to the upcoming consolidated cases before the Supreme Court.

The American Historical Review, 2017

In this outstanding monograph, published in Cornell University Press's The United State in the Wo... more In this outstanding monograph, published in Cornell University Press's The United State in the World book series, Michael Thompson offers a study of the rise and fall of Christian-Protestant US internationalism from the end of World War I to the beginning of the Cold War. Seeking to recover a vibrant, theologically informed critical politics of the interwar period, Thompson argues that this internationalism welded together critiques of the nation, empire, racism, and the military, while promoting the study of international relations as a field of intellectual inquiry and ethical reflection. Emerging from within the Protestant missionary enterprise in a process of critical self-examination and transformation, the intellectual edge of this formation rested on a radical critique of the notion of Christian nationhood in general, and of the United States as a Christian nation in particulara critique that, in turn, stemmed from a particular theology. Far from being an extension of prewar Social Gospel theology, this theology centred on investments in either the radical egalitarian ethics of Jesus as the founding figure of Christianity or the ecumenicalism of the Protestant church as a supranational, universal institution. Grounded mostly, but not exclusively in a liberal Protestant base, and nurtured within a New York-based radical milieu, this Christian internationalism represented its own distinct internationalist project, standing apart from any form of state-based US internationalism and/or US messianic-universalist nationalism, or, for that matter, from turn-of-the-century jeremiadic anti-imperialism, with its investment in a racialised nation and US exceptionalism. Part of the fabric of radical politics in the twentieth century, this internationalist formation eventually vanished in the 1940s as universalist commitments faded in favour of service to the American state and the links between God and the American nation were reforged in hegemonic Protestant discourse and US political culture. For God and Globe offers a wide-ranging analysis of Christian-Protestant internationalism as a broad set of ideas, commitments, and practices. It approaches this formation from three different analytical angles: as a "movement of thought" embodied in new practices of inquiry into foreign affairs, as a distinct "structure of thinking" concerning the anti-nationalist normativity of Christian universalism, and as a "holistic" and "oppositional" orientation focusing on issues of nationalism, racism, imperialism, militarism, and capitalism while not seeking salvation from law and international institutions (pp. 3-4). At the same time, the book's analysis is organised around what the author refers to as "two sites of collective deliberation," each constituting a key moment of possibility in the larger history of interwar 550

One of the factors in such a test is the presence of burden, the current judicial understandings of which have been inadequate to capture a wide range of impact that government regulations have on the individual or community practice of religion. This paper considers and compares the jurisprudence of the high courts of the United States and Canada and the European Court of Human Rights and argues for an expansive understanding of the burden requirement in the evaluation of religious accommodation claims, namely to consider burden as (1) coercion, (2) impact and (3) ratification. I argue that it is imperative to acknowledge different kinds of burden before proceeding to determine its gravity. This approach takes religion more seriously than prevailing approaches and, provides for a more equitable distribution of the burden of proof in religious accommodation claims.
