Bertoloni has been examined, and the typification of their names is discussed. A specimen from the Monti Herbarium (kept in BOLO) and iconographies from Bonanni and Bertoloni are designated as lectotypes, whereas another specimen from the Monti Herbarium is selected as neotype. The nomenclature of the names Senecio erucifolius L., Senecio tenuifolius Jacq., Senecio delphinifolius Vahl and Senecio rupestris Waldst. & Kit. is also analysed. The names S. crinitus Bertol. and S. laciniatus Bertol. belong to S. delphinifolius [now Jacobaea delphinifolia (Vahl) Pelser & Veldkamp] and S. rupestris [now Senecio squalidus subsp. rupestris (Waldst. & Kit.) Greuter], respectively, whereas S. erraticus Bertol. and S. praealtus Bertol. are accepted as separate taxa as Jacobaea erratica (Bertol.) Fourr. and Jacobaea erucifolia subsp. praealta (Bertol.) Greuter & B.Nord., respectively.

When in 1816, thanks to Gaetano Savi, Professor of Botany in Pisa and close friend of Giuseppe Raddi, he was appointed as full Professor of Botany at the University of Bologna, he devoted himself completely to teaching, researching, the care of the Botanic Garden and especially to the enterprise he was planning since he was a young student: the publication of the first Italian Flora, which gave him the fame he deserved. During the collection of the huge amount of data necessary to complete this great opera, he went on gathering plants for the Hortus Siccus Exoticus, a herbarium containing more than 10,000 specimens of plants from all over the world. Giuseppe Raddi was one of the main contributors, sending more than 200 plants in 20 years. Raddi must have held Bertoloni in high esteem, sending him newly discovered species in search of approval, and naming after him the genus Bertolonia (family Melastomataceae). The Herbarium of the University of Bologna is carrying out a complete survey of all the specimens sent by Raddi and the digitalisation of the results on the website http:// botanica.sma.unibo.it/raddi.

However, our findings show that previous publications of Alessandrini of 1838 and 1840 include the original descriptions by Bertoloni which predate Florula guatimalensis. Among the 60 new taxa authored by Bertoloni, 26 were published in 1838 and 34 in 1840 by Alessandrini. Additionally, original drawings were discovered inside an old copy of Bertoloni’s Florula guatimalensis. Also a comparison between the original material from Bertoloni’s herbarium and his original drawings is here reported for the first time. The collection of Guatemalan plants studied by Antonio Bertoloni preserved at BOLO was analysed and is here discussed. The new combinations Odontonema corymbulosum and Lamourouxia barbata are proposed. A neotype for Aristolochia podocarpa and an epitype for Philadelphus myrtoides are here designated.

A project to know the territory and plant diversity in the canals of the Bonifica Burana. In a few decades, industrialisation, urbanisation and intensive agriculture have deeply modified the landscape of the Emilian plain. The drainage canals can be an important element for land management, not only for their hydraulic functions, but also as a sort of artificial ecological corridors, connecting more natural areas through zones greatly altered by human activities, so that they can improve the survival chances of endangered hydro-igrophilous species. L'Erbario della Bonifica is an instrument to rediscover the significance of hydrology in our rural environment and over all to know the local biodiversity, also for conservation purposes.

The hybrid's fitness is low in the wild and there is no significant record of backcrossing; due to occasional reproduction and to the long life span, however, rare individuals of hybrid origin occur scattered in southeastern Europe, even outside of the current range of one or other of the parent species, and can be assigned to the corresponding nothospecies. Several names have been published for this taxon, and others have been variously misapplied to it for more than two centuries, resulting in a true nomenclatural jumble. A thorough examination of the types and protologues of all relevant names leads to the conclusion that Q. × crenata Lam., a name often overlooked, is the correct name for this nothospecies; Q. × hispanica Lam., the name adopted by most authors, is a name of unresolved application, which definitely refers to a different hybrid; all...

Travel and exchange of persons, objects, technologies, skills and ideas, though practiced at all ... more Travel and exchange of persons, objects, technologies, skills and ideas, though practiced at all times of humankind, are two of the most particular characteristics of the modern Western world. The exchange of seeds and of the information concerning them deserves a special importance in the history of agriculture and botany. On the one hand, seeds were simple and inexpensive to store and to travel, on the other hand they exposed botanists and gardeners to unexpected conceptual and technical challenges. We will first describe some of the particular features of the information contained in seeds, namely their delay in time and space. In the case of Bolognese botanist Ferdinando Bassi (1710-1774) and his extensive correspondence with other botanists like Linnaeus, we highlight how late 18th-century scholars handled the hidden knowledge contained in these plain little objects.
