Departing from the quantitative data specific for Moesia Inferior from the Romans 1 by 1 database... more Departing from the quantitative data specific for Moesia Inferior from the Romans 1 by 1 database, and from the qualitative information from a previous paper, the present work has as goal to provide an overview on the attested family relations types in Moesia Inferior over a period of three centuries, in an attempt to map the corresponding epigraphic habits and specificities. While we are aware that a general approach might seem less prolific, since the specificities of each settlement, as well as of each century are lost in the generalisation, the intention is to contextualise the data and to highlight the general trends, bringing also forward some examples, from which more particular case studies can be further developed.

The intention is to record them and their personal histories and to trace their geographical mobility over the centuries, from the first attestation and up to the 3rd century AD. This article continues the works of Ligia Ruscu 1 and Alexandru Avram, 2 through the further examination and interpretation of the epigraphical data pertaining to these two cities. The sample excludes those persons whom are attested by literary sources, or through coins, even though they are briefly mentioned.

More precisely, it continues the larger collective project Romans 1 by 1, by collecting and interpreting the data for the abovementioned Roman city. As such, the paper will focus on the epigraphically attested quantitative data on the population of Augusta Traiana, and on the qualitative data, covering the period between the first epigraphic attestations and up to the 3rd century AD. The work includes a prosopographical catalogue with the epigraphically attested population.

Rather than analysing migration in itself, it is seen as given factor, part of the larger complex of factors validating their theories. Thus, Rostovtzeff encased migration in the materialistic approach, upholding its motivations were almost exclusively economic, while Finley awarded the phenomenon certain social value, implicitly modelling economic realities, however without further discussions.

The graffito was introduced into scientific literature by I.A. Emets, who interpreted it as a list of names which did not have a clear content, and dated it to the 4th century BC. When the ostracon was analysed at the “Historical and Archaeological Museum ‘Phanagoria’”, it revealed gaps and inaccuracies compared to the text of the editio princeps. As a result, it was established that the graffito is a private letter and that it comes from the period between the second half of the 5th and the beginning of the 4th century BC. The letter has not been fully preserved; only five lines out of the six are readable. According to the text, Polemarkhos informs Hegesagores that he (Polemarkhos) lied to Athenodoros regarding the fact that Agyas has done something. All in all, the new letter replenishes our knowledge of anthroponomy, private life, and the linguistic characteristics of the language used by the Phanagoreans in the Classical period.

The endeavour attempts to draw not only on the evolution of the research, but also to bring up some of the inscriptions which have been edited. The need for such an approach lies in the rich bibliographical publications from the last decades, but also in the rich information they provide, and in the advantage of placing/ and contextualising it in the larger research.

While the first part 1 took into consideration individual tragedies, with death occurred by the hand of latrones, bandits or pirates, the current investigation is focused on what we have defined as traces of collective tragedies. By collective tragedies we understand those events which touched a larger sector of the population, resulted especially following attacks of enemies, or wars. Responsible for these acts of violence is especially the 'other', which falls in to the category of 'barbarian', or enemy. The Dacian wars, the Marcommanic wars, the Parthian expeditions, were some of the military events which lead to large scale acts of violence, and which left epigraphic traces of collective tragedies. SOURCES AND METHODS 1 The main sources we have employed are epigraphic, but the nature of the research requires correlation with other types of historical sources, especially literary ones. We will constantly try to connect our epigraphs with attested historical events, in order to place them into context, but also in order to underline how large-scale events are reflected at a personal level. Out of this reason, the first filter we have applied to our sample was chronology; as such, we will be dealing with the inscriptions in a diachronic manner and only within this framework they will be regarded geographically. The spatial distribution is important, but less so than the temporal one, as sometimes we have references to events that have taken place in a different area from the monument's discovery place. A note that cannot be avoided concerns the uncertain dating of most of our inscriptions. Some of them can be dated within half a century, which offers high accuracy for the undertaken analyses, but many cannot. Thus, we even have datings spanning over two centuries, which is, of course, extremely approximate and the conclusions drawn based on them can only be highly deductive or general. Most of the discussed monuments are funerary and they refer to barbarians, named or unnamed, in a military context.

The information started to be collected in 2015, and it is still in progress, the intention being to extend the geographical area as much as possible. The database represents an extremely useful resource in the study of ancient population, as well as a very user-friendly research tool, which allows primary browsing and selective, advanced searches alike.

While the first article will focus on personal tragedies, as seen through the epigraphic attestations of violence, the second article will focus on collective tragedies, bringing together, and matching both the epigraphic evidence and the literary sources, in an attempt to reconstruct, through the lenses of the Empire's population, the violent events of that time. By personal tragedies we understand any act of violence which lead to the harm, or death of an individual inflicted by other humans, and not by natural disasters. In this category we are not including those events which have a tragic input on one's life (i.e. the death of family members), only those which are the result of a violent act. The sample we have worked on proved to be moderate quantitatively, but it provided interesting information on Roman epigraphic habits, social life and even social psychology, offering a glimpse into the perils of the Roman world and people's responses when faced with them and with the losses they inflicted.

The current article presents the main scientific results extracted from the Romans 1by1 platform.... more The current article presents the main scientific results extracted from the Romans 1by1 platform. While the database has been technically documented before, the analyses, based on it, is introduced here for the first time. After gathering and structuring all the prosopographical information on all the people, attested epigraphically in Roman Moesia Inferior, Moesia Superior and Dacia, we are able now to present exhaustive statistics and a comprehensive overview, as well as to get relevant conclusions regarding the epigraphic habits of each province. The database and its purpose The paper is based on the results of a research project, which was carried out between October 2015 and September 2017 at the Babeș-Bolyai University from Cluj-Napoca (Romania). The goal of the project was to create a database for ancient population, in which all the known individuals dating from the Roman period (exhaustively up to the end of the 3 rd c. AD), from the provinces of Dacia and Moesia are recorded. The project aimed at employing new techniques and methodologies that come from other fields (i.e. computer science), in order to approach the study of ancient population in an innovative way, to ease the research, and to create an open access tool, available for the academic community. Being a research database based on a continuous work in progress, we have opted for two versions of the database: a) one which has a restricted access (login via personalized accounts), and which is used only by the research team, due to the fact, that it is continuously updated and reviewed; and b) the other one which is open access and represents the cleansed, standardized and user-friendly version of the first one. 1 The database has been documented before, 2 thus we will only schematically present its architecture and the metadata. The purpose of this article is to present the macro-analyses, resulted from the gathered data – as for the first time all the data, on all the people of these provinces, are structured and available in one place. No doubt, one of the most important advantages, in this case, is the creation of a prosopogra-phical corpus. The corpus can be freely used for scientific purposes by anyone interested in the field, as well as for educational purposes or for disseminating aspects related to ancient history in a wider sector of the public, in an accessible and friendly manner.

All the contributions address current debates about texts, epigraphy, numismatics, and iconography, as well as archaeological discoveries. They provide opportunities to share perspectives, new methods, and frameworks for future research. At the same time, this book is in line with the efforts in recent years to bridge the large gap between the scholarly traditions of West and East in order to absorb, interpret, and integrate the constant flow of new information about the Great Hungarian Plain – Black Sea – Central Asia region and adjacent territories, into mainstream western classical scholarship.
