It contains (1) the reference centiles, age-group mean and standard deviation values of the most important body measurements of children aged between 0–18 constructed on the basis of the research results of the Hungarian Longitudinal Growth Study (HLGS, 1980–2001); (2) the reference centiles of body height velocity between 3 and 18 years (HLGS); (3) the reference values of children’s (aged between 3 and 18 years) most important body measurements, which reference values were constructed on the basis of the Second Hungarian Growth Survey (HGS2, 2003–2006, data were collected cross-sectionally). The longitudinal references (HLGS) allow to follow children’s growth by regular monitoring, while the cross-sectional reference values (HGS2) support the estimation of actual developmental status of children. The software provides simultaneous visualization of measured data in the mirror of both longitudinal and cross-sectional growth reference centiles. Measurements, figures containing children’s data and growth references can be downloaded and printed from the software. The most important research results of both the longitudinal and cross-sectional studies are available in the Scientific background chapter. Additionally, the so-called MDN (maturity, development nutritional status) matrix method can also be learned in the software, which new method can estimate the body development, maturity and nutritional status at birth.

The isolation came to an and in the 19th century, but the observation of Jászság people remained in the centre of interest until now. Body development of Jászság children was studied first in 1964 and the investigation was repeated two times (by 20 years). This study observes the secular changes in body height, mass and body composition. From the three investigations body height and mass of 7-14 year-old pupils were prepared. Measurements for estimating body composition are available only in the last two studies. To assess the body composition a two-component model was applied. Basic statistical parameters were calculated. To test the differences between the groups the one-way analysis of variance was used. Our results proved a definite trend of increase both in body height and mass....

Their progression rates in turn are strongly influenced by nutrition and socio-economic status, a well-documented relationship. The pattern of the so-called positive secular changes, i.e. the increase in size and earlier maturation, fits the populations' historical model of economic development very well. The historical, political and economic changes occurring in this century in Hungary have had a remarkably strong impact. Until World War I Hungary was an agrarian part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, its ethnic composition was most variegated. Both World Wars caused fundamental changes, namely in respect of post-war Hungary they were associated with marked territorial losses and considerable population mobility. In interpreting the developmental differences in the data collected before and after these wars one should take account of the important facts that, in addition to the changes in socio...

Research paper thumbnail of The relationship between neonatal developmental status and post-natal nutritional status in Hungarian children

Age at adiposity rebound is critical for later development of nutritional status. The objective was to analyse the relationship between neonatal development and post-natal changes in nutritional status. Subjects were studied in a longitudinal national survey (1980-2001) from birth (n = 6219) to 18.0 years (n = 1448). Subjects were divided into small (SGA), appropriate (AGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) sub-groups. Nutritional status was assessed by BMI. The Reed-Asefa model was fitted to the subject's serial data of BMI. The body parameters of the neonatal developmental sub-groups differed significantly in all studied neonatal body dimensions: the higher the intra-uterine growth rate (the slowest growth rate was assumed in the SGA, the fastest in the LGA children), the heavier the body weight, the longer the length and the bigger the BMI values found. The nutritional status of the neonatal developmental sub-groups differed significantly during the studied post-natal interval: the higher the pre-natal growth rate, the better nutritional status (the larger BMI) was found after birth. Neonatal development influenced strongly the post-natal nutritional status of children. The results indicate that not only age at adiposity rebound but also neonatal developmental status can be used as an indicator of later obesity.

Methods: A random sample of 1932 Hungarian women was enrolled in the study. Bone mass was estimated by the Drinkwater-Ross method. Bone structure parameters were assessed by a quantitative ultrasound (QUS) device. High and very high risk of osteoporosis was identified by using the thresholds of QUS parameters. Results: By considering the changes in QUS parameters and bone mass by age and reproductive age an intensive, menopause-related change from the late 40s and then another significant change from the beginning of the 70s were observed in bone. The bone mass decreased while the porosity of the bone component of the female body decreased by age and by menopausal status. On average 15-17% of women are at very high risk of developing osteoporosis in the premenopausal status and after the menopausal transition the decreased level of female sex hormone production doubles this risk of osteoporosis from the beginning of the postreproductive period, triples this risk for women in the seventies. Conclusion: The results emphasize the importance of menopausal status assessment in screening for age-related increase risk of osteoporosis.

Since they can reduce the quality of life, they are urgent to be addressed before resulting in complications. As uroflowmetry might determine autonomic neuropathy earlier than cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction symptoms occur, our aim is to detect early abnormalities in bladder muscle function in children with DM. We investigate the diagnostic accuracy of uroflowmetry. As a secondary aim, we compare the prevalence of uroflowmetry abnormalities to the appearance of measures of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy. Finally, as an ancillary study, we examine the association of uroflowmetry with the appearance of peripheral neuropathy. These three aims, we feel, will put our results regarding uroflowmetry into an overall context of nerve disease early in the course of typ...

A new clothing thermal resistance scheme is presented and verified for the Carpathian region and ... more A new clothing thermal resistance scheme is presented and verified for the Carpathian region and for the time period 1971–2000. The scheme is as simple as possible by connecting operative temperature to air temperature, which allows for it to only use air temperature and wind speed data as meteorological inputs. Another strength of the scheme is that a walking person’s metabolic heat flux density is also simply simulated without having to regard any thermoregulation processes. Human thermal load in the above region is characterised by a representative adult Hungarian male and female with a body mass index of 23–27 kgm−2. Our most important findings are as follows: (1) human thermal load in the Carpathian region is relief dependent; (2) the scheme cannot be applied in the lowland areas of the region in the month of July since the energy balance is not met; (3) in the same areas but during the course of the year, clothing thermal resistance values are between 0.4 and 1 clo; (4) clothi...

This study addressed variations in bone mineral parameters of young athletes participating in sports with different mechanical loads. The bone mineral status of 1793 male and female athletes, 11 to 20 years of age, in several sports was measured with DEXA. Specific bone mineral parameters were converted to z-scores relative to age- and sex-specific reference values specified by the DEXA software. Z-score profiles and principal components analyses were used to identify body structural components in the young athletes and to evaluate the associations between the identified component and type of sport defined by mechanical load. A unique skeletomuscular robusticity of male wrestlers, pentathletes, and cyclists was noted: wrestlers had significantly more developed skeletomuscular robusticity and bone mineral density compared to the age-group average among elite athletes, while pentathletes and cyclist...

Natural history of Man is still the background of all anthropologists, although an evolution has ... more Natural history of Man is still the background of all anthropologists, although an evolution has been felt with the development of new techniques in molecular biology and in statistics for instance. However, it is not because we use new techniques that we would be necessarily better anthropologists. We must not use a reductionnistic reasoning, but a holistic thinking. We do not need all competences (from prehistory to genetics), we will not be polycompetent but we must be able to focus on priority problems and to stimulate the complementarity of the disciplines. Our richness is our diversity. Let us accept this diversity but let us work at the same time to a common spirit. Let us accept the fusion of “hard” and “soft” science in Anthropology, the scientific and humanistic approaches. We can not neglect our history, the past is still influencing some spirits. It is no longer possible to justify racism or simply discrimination on the basis of scientific arguments or even of pseudo-sci...

The growth pattern had been followed for the first ten years of life. Maturation status of the twins was assessed by anthropometric measures at birth: the contrasted subgroups belonged to the upper and lower quartiles and the interquartile range of body weight, resp. weight for length. Compared to singletons the body weight of twins caught up by the age of 2 years, the body height by the age of 3 years, resp. Taking peer-age singleton weight and height medians as 100%, median weight and height of maturation subgroups were expressed in percentage. No difference was found among maturation subgroups in the duration of the fast catch-up growth period. After 3 years of age the rate of growth was similar to singletons in all the three subgroups of twins, but the weight of the lower quartile twins lagged consistently behind by about 5-10 %. ...

The Roma are one of the largest ethnic minority groups in Hungary. The majority of the Roma population live in poor conditions in segregated settlements in Hungary, with most experiencing higher exposure to environmental health hazards. The main aim of this study was to examine the biological health and aging status of Roma women living in low socioeconomic conditions in Hungary. Methods: Low SES Roma (n: 20) and high SES non-Roma women (n: 30) aged between 35 and 65 years were enrolled to the present analysis. Body mass components were estimated by body impedance analysis, bone structure was estimated by quantitative ultrasound technique. Cellular aging was assessed by X chromosome loss estimation. Data on health status, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors were collected by questionnaires. Results: The results revealed that low SES women are prone to be more obese, have a higher amount of abdominal body fat, and have worse bone structure than the national reference values. A positive relationship was found between aging and the rate of X chromosome loss was detected only in women with low SES. Waist to hip ratio, existence of cardiovascular diseases and the number of gravidities were predictors of the rate of X chromosome loss in women. Conclusions: The results suggested that age-adjusted rate of X chromosome loss could be related to the socioeconomic status. 1 | INTRODUCTION Aging is a multistep biological process, which leads to a decreased ability to respond to stress, an increased Dorina Annar and Piroska Feher should be considered joint first author.

The importance of early diagnosis, bone-healthy lifestyle and medication is required for remaining fracture free. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and ultrasound densitometry are widely used to screen osteoporosis and other bone structural diseases. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices can also estimate bone mineral content (BMC), but it has not been recommended for diagnostic purposes. The aim was to analyse whether low levels of the body composition' components and low bone mineral content can predict bone structural risk. Methods. Healthy pre- (n: 235, 18-45 years) and postmenopausal women (n: 137, 46-78 years) were enrolled to the analysis. BMC (kg) was estimated by InBody 720 analyser. Bone structure was measured by ultrasound DTU-One osteometer. Broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA, dB/MHz), which estimates structural characteristics of trabecular bone, was used to assess bone structure. Body mass components were estimated by Drinkwater-Ross method. Res...
