Thoughts from external sources, direct or indirect, published or unpublished, have clearly been cited. French scientist, Alexis Carrel said, “All great men are gifted with intuition. They know without reasoning or analysis, what they need to know. ” Studies among leaders confirm this and underscore the value of developing intuition. Business is all about rational, orderly systems for strategic planning, decision-making, forecasts, operations, budgeting, supervision and control, production and practically every other facet of an organisation. Under rising pressure and ambiguity, rational thinking may not perform satisfactorily. In the context of management decision-making, research conducted by Nutt (1999) reveals that rational/logic based strategies struggle to reach the fifty percent success mark....

This concept brings about the function of leadership being shared amongst team members through the collective development of vision, shared responsibility, shared work goals, trust and free flow of information. The key to the success of shared leadership lies in open communication. Encounter group training is a powerful tool to open up team members and bring about the free communication and trust that will allow interpersonal sharing. This training methodology can play a significant role in shared leadership by developing the very qualities necessary for it to happen. The article is divided into five sections. After the introduction, a section is devoted to the concept of shared leadership followed by a section on encounter groups. The next section elaborates on the working of encounter groups followed by a case study of an encounter group session conducted by the author. The last section contains ...

These changes have brought to the forefront how important managerial effectiveness is to business enterprise survival. The effective teaching of management is, therefore, gaining increasing prominence. The teaching of management should encompass not only the delivery of concepts or theory but also develop team work skills, balanced decision-making and application of the concepts being taught. The lecture method is incapable of fulfilling all these objectives. It can be combined with other simple methods to enhance student learning. There is a vast variety of methods to choose from and a lecturer can pick those suitable to his or her context. The article is divided into five sections. After the introduction, a section is devoted to the concept of active learning followed by a section on seating arrangements. The next section elaborates on different innovative methods and the last section co...

Jung (1933) has defined it as the psychological function transmitting perceptions in an unconscious way. Smith (2008) describes intuition as rapid, affectively charged judgments arrived at without conscious awareness of the reasoning processes involved, stressing that it has the potential to influence, inform, and enhance not only the learning of the individual but also the development of collective learning processes. He discusses intution as one of the principal means by which managers and other professionals arrive at judgments. Hodgkinson (2008) describes intuition more tangibly as the result of the way our brains store, process and retrieve information at a subconscious level and so is a real psychological phenomenon which needs further study to help us harness its potential. There has been an attempt to, distinguish...

Future uncertainties, competitive survival, networking and communications all place heavy demands on managerial decision making. Further, managers frequently face decisions involving equally balanced outcomes and information overload. Intuition is an appropriate tool for cutting through such complexity and places issues in perspective. Combined with analytical thinking, intuition can reveal optimal outcomes for business application. Accepting and practicing intuition can develop its accuracy levels for reliable use. After describing the concept of intuition briefly, this article discusses the relevance of intuitive decision making in business and finally, discusses how managers can be trained in intuitive thinking through meditation, activities and organizational support.

terms. Customers are more demanding; product life cycles are shorter; technologies remain constantly changing. Managers have to, thus, continuously scan the competitive environment. Corporate working today invariably necessitates intuitive working as it requires decisions that are in tune with the evolving environment. Intuition is an excellent tool for cutting through needless complexity and place issues in perspective.
This article discusses intuitive decision making as the means to arrive at such decisions and summarizes how intuitive thinking can be integrated formally into an organization’s management processes.
