Nowadays the WHO places obesity among the ten major risk factors threatening health, considering the prevention of the obesity epidemic as a public health challenge priority in the twenty-first century. Objectives: Analyse the existence of causality of the food context variables (frequency of eating breakfast, number of daily meals, frequency of food intake between meals), as determining factors in the body mass index of adolescents. Methods: This study was observational and transversal, quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive and correlational, was conducted with 1467 adolescents with a mean age of 14.01, mostly female sex (52.3%), living in rural areas (63.32%) in various districts of Portugal mainland, attending between the 5th and 12th grade of public education, it is carried out an anthropometric assessment and stratification inde...

It seems to indicate that the preventive actions in our country are not working out, which can be an outcome of not considering important issues like gender differences. Much has been researched on the determinants of smoking but the existed data has not been conclusive or specific of Portugal. An Investigation Project is ongoing, aiming to deepen the knowledge of the adolescents' determinants of smoking by gender and to develop more effective preventive actions. Preliminary results of the Project are here presented. Objectives The main objectives are to determine the individual, micro-social and environmental variables related to smoking by gender. Methodology A quantitative study, of the transversal descriptive type, was carried out on a sample of schools of the 3 th grade and secondary level of Viseu District. An anonymous self-filling questionnaire, purposed-built, was fulfilled in the classroom from 9 th to 12 th years. Odds-Ratio test was used to measure the risk factor. Results 470 students from 9 th to 12 th grades fulfilled the questionnaire. They were aged between 13 and 20 years old. 8.1% of the girls and 16.1% of the boys are regular or occasional smokers. Smoking, in girls and boys, seems to be related to these factors, among others: inability to refuse a cigarette offer, drunkenness, smoking among best friends (boys and girls), cigarette offers by best friend(s) and availability of money. Gender differences were found in some smoking

Objectives: To classify the nutritional status of children, analyzing its relationship with birth weight. Methods: Cross-sectional/observational study comprising 1424 preschool children, average age 4.58 years old (SD=0,990), residents in the centre/north region of Portugal. The children’s anthropometric measurement was obtained and the classification was based on the NCHS reference (CDC, 2000) and the birth weight classification on the WHO (2001). Results: Globally 60.0% had normal weight, 38.2% were overweight (including 17.5% obesity) and 1.8% low-weight but the differences shown to be independent from age and gender. 89.0% of girls and 87.6% of boys were born with appropriate weight for gestational age while 7.8% and 4.0% were born respectively lightweight and large for gestationa...

Descriptive study composed by 1424 children, average age 4.58 years old and their mothers, average age 34.47 years old, living in several parts of Portugal. The children's anthropometric measures were evaluated and classified according to the NCHS referential (CDC, 2000)(1) and of the progenitors by the orientations of the WHO (2000)(2) and Portugal, DGS (2005).(3) Social demographic data was obtained by filling in the Food Frequency Questionnaire adapted from Rito (2007).(4) The overweight affected 34.3% of the children, (including 17.4% obesity), being the higher values on boys (36.8%) and in 5 year old children (39.5). In 41.9% of the progenitors overweight was noted (12.1% obesity), being higher in mothers with low scholarship, low income, older and living in a rural area. The probability of the child to be overweighted was 1.4 times higher when mothers were overweight, and close to 2 times in the relationship mother/daughter. Others enabling factors were revealed, like weight gain above recommended during pregnancy and a higher weight at birth. Due to the obtained interferences, it is accepted the existence of enabling factors of maternal and child markers in the development of overweight in the child, so that the prevention of child obesity should consider not only the environmental dimension but also the genetic heritage.
