Goal-striving discrepancy stress is an organismic state characterized by tension and discomfort due to discrepancies between aspirations and achievements. Several studies have demononstrated that goal-striving discrepancy stress are asociated with psychiatric disorder. The present study focused upon the discrepancies between aspiration and achievements in housing among Filipino men. Housing constitutes one of man's basic problems in urban societies; however, in spite of the fact that housing is related to psychiatric adaptation, relatively few studies have been made of this problem. It is important to recognize that housing has numerous psychological implications for an individual. It is a symbol of social status and social acceptance and greatly influences an individual's view of himself and others. Some investigators have even suggested that housing may be construed as a symbolic representation of the mother-child relationship. For the present investigation, twelve housing characteristics considered to be important to Filipinos e. g., size, cost, location, ownership of land, etc., were derived and ninety-six Filipino males from different age groups and social classes were asked to indicate both their aspiration and their actual achievement for each of the twelve housing characteristics. Goal-striving discrepancies were obtained by subtracting the aspirational endorsements from the achievement endorsements. The discrepancy scores were then correlated with various psychiatric symptom patterns through factor analysis. Results of the investigation revealed profound social class differences in the amount of goal-striving discrepancy stress. ......

However, current measures of ethnocultural identity typically assess one's overall cultural heritage identification without considering differences in various domains of identity. This paper provides initial validation of an attitudinal scale to complement a previously published behavioral scale of ethnocultural identity for use with Asians and Pacific Islanders. Preliminary analyses of data from 504 university students in Hawai'i support the factorial structure and internal consistency of a seven-item attitudinal index. Early evidence of the validity of the attitudinal indices within a multi-index Cultural Identity Battery is provided.

The rationale is to provide a historical orientation to this indigenous group, to increase awareness of the complexities of research about Native Hawaiians, and to draw attention to emerging issues, practices, and challenges of psychological research emphasizing indigenous health and well-being. This article lays a historical foundation for future research with a renewed emphasis on indigenous knowledge and its holistic view of psychology in relationship to the land, spiritual beliefs, cultural practices, language, and community.

The goal of this article is to present a measurement tool with potential utility for health care workers and mental health professionals who require a means of systematically assessing ethnocultural behaviors in the course of their professional clinical activities and decision making. METHODOLOGY. As part of a larger effort to develop a multidimensional, ethnocultural identification scale for clinical and research use, a cultural general 19 item selfreport behavior index entitled the Ethnocultural Identity Behavior Index (EIBI) was designed. The psychometrics of the EIBI were examined on a sample of 352 college students selfidentifying with an Asian American or Native Hawaiian ethnocultural group. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS. The data suggest that the EIBI has high internal consistency. Construct and concurrent convergent validity were also established for the EIBI through a comparison of the EIBI schores of immigrants and nonimmigrants, through correlations with...

With one exception, these studies have failed to identify any significant correlates between the two variables. The present study examined this relationship by administering the Stroop Color and Word Test, Cattell's 16 PF, and the Maudsley Personality Inventory to a sample of 210 college students. Results indicated no significant correlates existed between five different measures of Stroop Color and Word Test performance and the personality scales. It was concluded that the Stroop Color and Word Test has little relationship to measures of personality and may best be understood in terms of specific cognitive processes.

This sub-study of the WHO Determinants of Outcome of Severe Mental Disorders research project was... more This sub-study of the WHO Determinants of Outcome of Severe Mental Disorders research project was aimed at characterizing the behavioral and expressive qualities of schizophrenia in two highly diverse cultures. Early research has indicated that the core elements involving affect, perceptual and cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia are highly similar in form in most cultures of the world. Much of the cross-cultural literature emphasizes, however, strong differences in the ways in which schizophrenia is actually expressed and manifested in different settings. The basic methodology for psychiatric description and diagnosis in the WHO program was the Present State Examination. In five of the field centers a method for investigating the expressive quality and the social behavior of patients in their own communities through the eyes of significant others was applied. This method was then subjected to psychometric tests of cross-cultural applicability and found to be valid for comparing behavior across settings. The expressive patterns of the Indian and Nigerian patients were studied from two perspectives. Indian schizophrenics were described by family members as manifesting a more affective and "selfcentered" orientation; the Nigerian patients presented with a highly suspicious, bizarre, anxious quality to the basic behavioral pattern. The main features of pathology were in general accord with the descriptions of indigenous psychiatrists. The special qualities of the psychosis in the two cultures were interpreted against the background of traditional psychopathological and anthropologic theories concerning the psychodynamics and the influence of differing social conflictual themes in the two cultures. Analysis of psychopathology in this manner was found to enhance understanding of underlying mechanisms and the role of cultural conflicts in its expression.

Data are presented from a series of 386 acutely ill schizophrenic patients selected from nine field research centers located in developing and developed countries (Aarhus, Denmark; Agra, India; Cali, Colombia; Chandigarh, India; Honolulu, USA; Ibadan, Nigeria; Nagasaki, Japan; Prague, Czechoslovakia; Rochester, USA). On a methodological level, the study demonstrates that life event methodologies originating in the developed countries can be adapted for international studies and may be used to collect reasonably reliable and comparable cross-cultural data on psychosocial factors affecting the course of schizophrenic disorders. Substantive findings replicate the results of prior studies which conclude that socioenvironmental stressors may precipitate schizophrenic attacks and such events tend to cluster in the two to three week period immediately preceding illness onset.
