Liver cell necrosis was assessed by raised transaminase levels within 24-48 hr of uhrasonography in all patients. Gallbladder wall (GBW) measured 5.16 +_ 0.4 mm (mean +-SeM) in patients and 2.0 +-0.06 mm in controls (P < 0.001). GBW was thickened (>3 mm) in 21 patients (68%), with double wall appearance in 5 (16%), and sludge was seen in the gallbladder cavity in 7 (23%). GBW thickness was significantly related to serum albumin (r =-0.45, P < 0.01) and bilirubin (r = 0.50, P < 0.004), but not to the serum transaminase levels, On repeat measurements after recovery in 13 patients, GBW thickness fell from 5.84 +-0.49 mm during acute hepatitis to 2.46 +-0.21 mm (P < 0.001).

These coated biopsy needles have been successfully used in in vitro trials. The results are discussed here. Potential application areas include vascular, cardiovascular and orthopaedics.

Objective assessment of lymph function using quantitative lymphoscintigraphy. Seven cases with either rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis were found to have impaired lymph drainage associated with edema. All cases shared a distal rheumatoid pattern of arthritis but showed no relation between severity of lymphatic impairment and either duration or severity of arthritis. Polyarthritis of rheumatoid-type may be associated with lymphedema due to impaired lymphatic function.

Reviewing the etymology, I discovered that revalidation was included in the Oxford English Dictionary ( OED ) only in its 2004 update. However, long before that the General Medical Council had used it in the context of assessing a doctor’s fitness to practise. So who …

Altogether 9% of the consultants hold posts as honorary consultants, but they hold 39% of the awards.1 Although well deserved, these awards were perhaps achieved because of the greater …

The method entails passing a catheter into the empyema cavity under ultrasound guidance and using strong suction to drain loculated pus. Eight patients had no recurrence after a single treatment and one patient had no recurrence after two treatments. The procedure was a useful palliative measure in two patients with malignant disease who subsequently died. In one patient failure of the lung to expand after the procedure showed the need for thoracotomy. In one other patient the empyema recurred and decortication was required.
