Because coastal managers require reliable risk-based analysis of the whole life cycle of these coastal structures, previous lifetimes should be studied. This is a differentiating factor with respect to the newly built breakwaters. For this reason, in this work, a methodology for assessing how the hydraulic performance of an expired lifetime has evolved over the years is presented. It is performed following a probabilistic approach due to the uncertainty related to both the involved variables (wave climate, geometrical and structural breakwater variables) and the hydraulic response of the structure. The first ones are characterized by reliable probability distribution functions. The second ones are characterized by reliable formulae for the analysis of the hydraulic response. However, their non-conventional designs located in sha...

If this happens, the shell is said to be sensitive to imperfections. Several approximate methods contemplate the phenomenon of instability in concrete shells, above all that which is based on the IASS Recommendations. In the latter there are some curves reflecting the influence of the initial geometric imperfections in the buckling load for simple geometric models, such as the sphere and the cylinder. In recent decades, different revisions of the Recommendations have been carried out referring to the way the value of the imperfections is quantified. However, new curves, which reflect the influence of imperfections in models with different geometries to those mentioned above, have not been stated. In this study, a method similar to that used by Dulácska and Kollár [1, 5] is implemented to determine the imperfection sensitivity factor in the cas...

De... more The musical style kuduro has recently become the most exportable commodity of Angolan culture. Derided by local critics as senseless noise, extolled by international connoisseurs as quintessentially innovative, kuduro is exactly the product of the encounter between global forces and local politics. This article examines the local and global facets of kuduro by arguing, primarily, that this style means different things for local publics and international audiences. For the former, kuduro is a meaningful experience deeply ingrained in social practices. For the latter, kuduromostly conveys a certain image of Africa, dominated by African youths dancing with total mastery of their bodies against the backdrop of dilapidated neighborhoods. However, the point here is not only to affirm that international audiences have misread the indigenous aspects of kuduro. Rather, I suggest that it is precisely this triangulation between the global and the local that constitutes the condition of possibility for kuduro. So, on the one hand, the global uproots kuduro, in the sense that kuduro circulates internationally detached from its local features. Yet on the other, for many young people in Luanda, the global provides the arena in which social visibility can be performed. This has the potential, then, to translate into upward social mobility, political participation and economic security. This dynamic was apparent to me when, in December of 2012, I was invited by a friend to visit a recording studio in Sambizanga, one of the largest and most populated municipalities in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. My friend, Angolan photographer Ngoi Salucombo, was on assignment for a German magazine commissioning a new production on Angolan kuduristas (supported by the Goethe Institute Angola). The purpose was to lay the groundwork for the production of a feature that would unite German DJs alongside Angolan kuduristas (a plethora of DJs, singers and producers). My friend was in charge of identifying the Angolan counterpart. That day, we met the contact given by the German producers: the kudurista and producer Caetano, by Refinaria de Luanda, at the road between Sambizanga and Cacuaco. After a short conversation, we followed Caetano’s car into the heart of Sambizanga’s slum, through pot-holeridden roads and decrepit houses, the kind of scenario that has become common in the many videos of kuduro that abound on the Internet. We then arrived at Solo’s studio, which is the most well-equipped makeshift studio I have seen in Luanda. The studio itself was an extension of the house of Solo’s mother, where he had built three rooms. The first one was an austere waiting room furnished with a couch; at the other end there was a bedroom, sparsely equipped with a mattress on the floor. In the middle, there was the studio proper, consisting of two little rooms separated by a windowed wall so the engineers and the musicians could see each other. The smaller room had only a microphone visible. On the other side, there was a table with a computer, two equalizers and a sound system. Although the studio was ill-lit and poorly ventilated, there were more than 10 people gathered there, and a flow

Despite its limited scale of only 5.1 Mw, the earthquake caused nine deaths and material damage valued at over 800 million Euros in a city of just 100,000 inhabitants. This catastrophic result has led the regional government to implement a new plan, SISMIMUR, to better foresee and manage future earthquakes. In a move to improve the response to earthquakes, the new plan will incorporate innovative approaches to seismic engineering, creating aftershock evaluation protocols for buildings and the implementation of urban planning to reduce seismic vulnerability in the territorial development of cities. In these fi elds, the government of the Region of Murcia has commissioned the Technical University of Cartagena to conduct an urban microzonation in the city of Lorca as a pilot project to incorporate its fi ndings to the future plan SISMIMUR. This article summarizes the main advances achieved in this research project and their possible contributions to the SISMIMUR plan.

Management of the process and the mechanisms for damage assessment in the city are a topic which, to date, has a scarce tradition in Spanish engineering. The city of Lorca is located in an environment of certain seismic vulnerability due to the presence of the Alhama fault, so the possibility of another earthquake cannot be ruled out. Therefore, the actions to be undertaken in the urban regeneration must be based on integral tools, such as seismic microzonation, and must affect certain fields of knowledge, such as territorial management and urban planning. This paper presents new techniques for aftershock management and damage assessment, with the experience acquired in the 2011 earthquake, and analyzes the proposals that are currently being developed in the city of Lorca from the territorial point of view.

Unlike other applications, these models are directly involved in the definition of the hysteretic behavior of plastic hinges developed in the structure when subjected to seismic loading. These models must accurately reproduce the real behavior of structures with high computational efficiency. In this sense, using theoretical-empirical expressions that reduce the computational time might be suitable. The main objective of this research is the calibration and improvement of some existing expressions that are capable of modeling several parameters related to yield and ultimate states of reinforced concrete rectangular sections (yield moment, yield chord rotation and ultimate chord rotation). These expressions are calibrated with a set of tests selected from an existing database of more than 1000 tests: Only those elements complying with the constructional and seismic requirements imposed by the main codes are selected. Due to their robustness and numerical features, optimization techniques based on genetic algorithms are used in order to calibrate the expressions with the selection of tests. Results are compared with those obtained: (i) by previous authors, and (ii) using the expressions included in EC-8, showing an improvement in some statistical parameters. The calibration with structural elements complying with the codes requirements implies that these expressions are adequate for use in standard buildings. Keywords: section behaviour, reinforced concrete, genetic algorithms, calibration with tests

However, WRDB are affected by several limitations that must be addressed prior to their use (they are not quantitatively perfect; high-frequency information is not included in global wind reanalysis models). In addition, the selection of a given extreme value model is also an important issue that must be conveniently analyzed. The objective of this work is to describe a complete methodology able to cope with the problems derived from the use of WRDB, specially for extreme value analysis and long term design. We pay special emphasis to: i) the high frequency noise or peaks of the time series, and ii) the extreme value statistical model. The methodology is illustrated with examples applied to the port of Barcelona (Spain).
