Loss of metabolic activity resulting from dialysis of the cytosol was restored with glutathione. Cysteine could not substitute for GSH. No other cofactor was found to be required for activity. The optimum conditions for this biotransformation with respect to time, temperature, protein concentration, and pH were determined. Rates of metabolism of dihalomethanes showed the following order: CH2i2 greater than CH2Br2 congruent to CH2BrCi greater than CH2Ci2. Administration of the enzyme inducer, phenobarbital, to rats did not alter this metabolic pathway nor did repeated administration of CH2Br2 or CH2Ci2 change the rate of metabolism. The enzyme catalyzing this reaction was localized in the liver. Compounds known to serve as substrates for various GSH transferases inhibited the reaction as did those capable of interacting with sulfhydryl groups.

Most of this burden is concentrated in low and middle-income countries, underpinning the importance of the topic of global surgery (GS). The multidisciplinary principles of GS are increasingly recognised as being key to modern practice and as such, must be fostered at early stages of medical training. However, it is unclear whether medical students are being exposed to GS. This study aimed to assess the importance of GS and its presence in medical curricula. METHODS A novel, 22-item online questionnaire was developed and disseminated to medical students and faculty members using social media platforms. Data collection was conducted by a collaboration of medical students, who acted as regional leads at their institutions. RESULTS 795 medical students and 141 faculty members representing 38/42 (90.4%) of UK medical schools completed the questionnaire. Only 84 students (10.6%) were previously exposed to GS. Most students (66.3%) and faculty (60.6%) agreed that GS should be an integral part of the curriculum. Only 20 students (2.5%) were familiar with what a career in GS means. CONCLUSION Approximately two-third of students and faculty agree that global surgery should be an integral part of the mandatory curriculum. Findings of this study should underpin further incorporation of GS into curricula, as high-income countries can decisively contribute to achieving the global surgery 2030 targets, by training a new generation of clinicians who are ready for the challenges of the 21st century.

Effective sports participation of children with hearing deficits has physical, mental, intellectual as well as societal benefits. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of sports participation on academic achievement of hearing impaired children. For this purpose, a total of children were selected, divided into groups on the basis of comparative experimental design. Half of the sample was assigned to control group including those students who did not participate in sports whereas, other half was assigned to experimental group including those children who participated in sports activity including Badminton, Football and Volleyball. After pretest and post test data was collected with the help of Sports Participation Scale and Academic Performance rating scale. The overall reliability of the scale was found to be. METHODOLOGY 20 patients presented with lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow) to OPD in Ziauddin Hospital (Clifton, North and Kemari campuses). They were enrolled for the purpose of research study after written informed consent. Subjects were erratically assigned into 2 groups, i.e. group A for MWM and group B for manipulation. All patients were examined before and after the treatment and then findings were evaluated. Pain was sedated by Visual analogue scale (VAS), grip strength was measured by hand–held dynamometer and functional activities’ outcomes were measured by forearm analysis questionnaire survey for lateral epicondylitis, by H B Leung et al 2004. RESULT A total of 20 patients were randomly selected and divided into two groups i.e. Group–A & Group–B. The result shows for Group A: The mean o...

The use of microbial cell factories to produce nutraceuticals is considered to be sustainable and promising for meeting market demand. Among the diverse strategies for optimizing microbial cell factories, the CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) system has emerged as a valuable tool for gene integration, deletion, activation, and downregulation. With the advent of multiplexed and precise CRISPR strategies, optimized microbial cell factories are revolutionizing the yield of nutraceuticals. This review focuses on the development of highly adaptable CRISPR strategies to optimize the production in microbial cell factories of some important nutraceuticals (belonging to the class of carotenoids, flavonoids, stilbenoids, polysaccharides, and nonprotei...

Nobiletin (NOB) is a polymethoxy flavone that has recently gained substantial consideration due to its curative impacts. The present experiment was conducted to assess the hepatoprotective efficiency of NOB on As-generated hepatotoxicity. Twenty-four adult rats were equally distributed into four groups and designated as control, As (50 mg/kg)-treated, As + NOB (50 mg/kg and 25 mg/kg, respectively), and NOB (25 mg/kg)-treated groups. After 30 days, experimental animals were decapitated, then blood and tissue samples were collected for further analysis. The group treated with As showed a significant decrease in the activity of antioxidant enzymes, including catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GSR), and total antioxidant status (TAS), and a substantial increase in the accumulation of As in liver tissues, levels of total oxida...

Hepatocellular carcinoma is a major contributor to the global cancer burden. It affects millions ... more Hepatocellular carcinoma is a major contributor to the global cancer burden. It affects millions of people in Pakistan on a yearly basis. Furthermore, HCC is linked to viral infections Hepatitis B and C, which account for roughly 87 percent of HCC cases in Pakistan. HCC is identified using imaging techniques such as MRI, Ultrasound, and histology, which have radiation hazards and frequently need expensive healthcare systems that are less available in most of the developing countries. Novel HCC biomarkers are being developed as part of a large research project aimed at detecting the disease early. These include the creation of biomarkers based on HCC patients' transcriptome and proteomic profiles. Circulating proteins, which are easily detected in body fluids, including blood serum, may thus provide an opportunity for the development of HCC biomarkers. Blood-based serum biomarkers must be developed for easy, non-invasive, and early detection of HCC. In conjunction with imaging te...

The findings showed that fermentation had no impact on starch fine structure but it decreased the molecular-weight from 2.26 to 1.04 × 108 g/mol in native highlands barley and after 72 h fermentation (FHB72) respectively. Also, it decreased amylopectin long-chains (B1 and B2) while increased short-chains. The intensity ratio of FT-IR at 995/1022 and 1047/1022 bands were found to be higher as the time of fermentation progressed, and the highest absorption-intensity at 3000-3600 cm-1 and higher swelling capacity were noticed in the starch of FHB72. During fermentation, pasting peak, final and setback viscosities were decreased. Microscopically, granules with more pores, damaged, cracked, and no growth rings were found in starches isolated after 48 h and 72 h of fermentation. This study indicated that fermentation up to 72 h is an effective method to modify highlands barley starch.
