philosophy, and its accompanying narrative of development.
Ancient understanding viewed reality as a series of descending steps,
starting with the most ineffable and most simple which is first unfolded
through divinity and then moves down through varying conditions of
existence – the highest of which are closest to the originating simplicity
and are purely intelligible, but the lower being increasingly complex and
changeable, ultimately becoming perceptible to the senses. These lower
conditions of existence were not rejected as evil or illusive, but they were
seen as deriving their worth and trustworthiness from their relation to the
highest. Each plane of reality had its answering correspondence in the
nature of the human being. Since the highest levels possessed the greatest
intelligibility and stability, it was here that philosophers sought to centre
the art and science of philosophy. For this reason philosophy was seen as
an interior discipline which allowed a conscious and active participation in
a divine and intellectual drama – in more modern terms it was considered
to be a spiritual path, or a yoga of enlightenment.

fragment about the bow and the lyre, where their “backstretched” or “retroflex” harmony (palmtonos harmonia) is
said to depict the tense inner cohesion of a diverging unity.
The same authority, Heraclitus of Ephesus, employs a Greek
pun to show how in the bow itself, one of whose names is bios,
both the name of life and the act of death coexist. Orpheus, as
a mythical hero—indeed, one of the famed Argonauts—stands
right at the centre of these junctions. So it is no wonder that
this book shares in that harmonious tension: a tension rooted
in the nature of the lyre and the bow, whose products may be
piercing sounds or slaying arrows.
Here, we have first a tension within the author, who is intoxicated with his theme and yet committed to carry out his
exposition in a discursive and academic manner. We can almost feel his plight: having in mind the “tremendous contem
plation of the divine truth and beauty”, which would merit
cither a bakchic outburst or a “supra-noetic metaphysical silence”, he is forcing himself to compose a “scientific” treatise.
Having heard the music of O rpheus’ lyre, he is trying to convey as best as he can the unspeakable beauty of those notes in
an all too earthly human language.

activities involved in the production and reception of films” and “the variety of ways in which
the film text is intermeshed with a whole set of economic, technological, social, and cultural
practices” (Hill xix), scholars continue to engage in extended, often markedly philosophical
studies of films themselves. Using analytic methods that owe “much to art history” and literary
theories, film scholarship that carefully, intelligently, and sometimes painstakingly explicates
meanings created by narrative and cinematic choices in individual films constitutes a line of
research that is quite different from work that ‘looks past the screen’ to understand audience
reception, regulatory systems (especially censorship), and the many material facets of industrial
media production (Smoodin 2). And so, while historical moments of cinephilia might be most
readily associated with the art journals and film clubs of the silent era and later with the
collection of critics in France and the U.S. who shaped filmmaking and popular taste in the
1960s, one can see that cinephilia still or now finds passionate expression in scholarship that to
some degree locates “the site of aesthetic production [in] the mind of the critical spectator” but
also aims to achieve an “Arnoldian ideal of critical disinterestedness” that is distinguished by
“sensitive response” and informed, circumspect textual analysis (Taylor 150, 157).

Research paper thumbnail of Green Roof Systems - Weiler

The technology and materials for vegetating roofs and creating usable open spaces over structure ... more The technology and materials for vegetating roofs and creating usable open spaces
over structure have been known for centuries. Since 4000 BC, practitioners of
building and agriculture have utilized the knowledge and materials of their time to
construct sacred places such as ziggurats, simple vegetated roofs, and remarkable gar￾dens over elevated surfaces.
The building green movement is not new, nor is the practice of using natural
resources responsibly to sustain life and encourage the regeneration of natural resources.
In the last five years, the term green roof has taken on ecological and social signifi￾cance beyond its seemingly simplistic description. As commonly understood, the term
has become an epithet for the reduction of pollution and urban heat islands, for large￾scale mitigation of stormwater runoff, and for maximum utilization of urban land.
Justifiably, the concept of the green roof as a way to add pervious surface and usable
open space without taking up additional land is easy to understand and should be equally
easy to implement. Consequently, many clients, municipalities, architects, landscape archi￾tects, and planners have come to consider them as an integral element of sustainable
building practice.

Technical people need to be aware of many things. One study said that a coating chemist must be proficient
in 27 different disciplines. This book is directed at supplying a broad cross-index of some of the different
aspects to help the technical person. It is not meant to be an in-depth treatise on any subject. It is meant
to give insight into the various subjects covered. The chapter authors or the editor may be contacted for
more information or direction on the subjects.
To aid the person involved in coatings, inks, or adhesives, be they chemists, engineers, technicians,
researchers, or manufacturers, chapters are given in the areas of fundamentals and testing, coating and
processing, techniques and materials, and surface coatings. Each section contains information to expand
the awareness and knowledge of someone practicing in the field. The objective is to help people solve
problems and increase their level of technology. With time, technology increases, as shown by the chapter
on statistical design of experiments, and the chapter on using equipment to determine ultraviolet (UV)
resistance. Newer materials such as fluorocarbon resins, polyurethane thickeners, and high-temperature
pigments are included as well as older materials such as alkyds, clays, and driers.
To accomplish the presentation of technology, this book has been expanded to 118 chapters by adding
new material and updating other material. Hopefully, the reader will expand his or her knowledge and
further push the envelope of technology.
The editor gratefully acknowledges the many contributions of the chapter authors and the publishers
who have made this book possible.

Research paper thumbnail of Using Psilocybin to Investigate the Relationship between Attention, Working Memory, and the Serotonin 1A and 2A Receptors - Olivia L. Carter

In an attempt to tease out the relationship between these elements, this study tested the effects of the hallucinogenic mixed 5-HT 1A/2A receptor agonist psilocybin alone and after pretreatment with the 5-HT 2A antagonist ketanserin. Eight healthy human volunteers were tested on a multiple-object tracking task and spatial working memory task under the four conditions: placebo, psilocybin (215 Ag/kg), ketanserin (50 mg), and psilocybin and ketanserin. Psilocybin significantly reduced attentional tracking ability, but had no significant effect on spatial working memory, suggesting a functional dissociation between the two tasks. Pretreatment with ketanserin did not attenuate the effect of psilocybin on attentional performance, suggesting a primary involvement of the 5-HT 1A receptor in the observed deficit. Based on physiological and pharmacological data, we speculate that this impaired attentional performance may reflect a reduced ability to suppress or ignore distracting stimuli rather than reduced attentional capacity. The clinical relevance of these results is also discussed. &

Pharmacological challenge with the 5-HT 2A agonist psilocybin (PY) is useful in studying the neurobiological basis of cognition and consciousness. Objective Investigation of dose-dependent effects of PY on psycho(patho)logical and physiological parameters. Methods Eight subjects received placebo (PL), and 45 (very low dose, VLD), 115 (low dose, LD), 215 (medium dose, MD), and 315 (high dose, HD) g/kg body weight PY. The Altered States of Consciousness Rating Scale (5D-ASC), the Frankfurt Attention Inventory (FAIR), and the Adjective Mood Rating Scale (AMRS) were used to assess the effects of PY on psycho(patho)logical core dimensions, attention, and mood. A 24-h electrocardiogram (EKG) was recorded and blood pressure was measured. Plasma concentrations of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), prolactin (PRL), cortisol (CORT), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and standard clinical chemical parameters were determined. Results PY dose dependently increased scores of all 5D-ASC core dimensions. Only one subject reacted with transient anxiety to HD PY. Compared with PL, MD and HD PY led to a 50% reduction of performance in the FAIR test. General inactivation , emotional excitability , and dreaminess were the only domains of the AMRS showing increased scores following MD and HD PY. The mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was moderately elevated only 60 min following administration of HD PY. Neither EKG nor body temperature was affected by any dose of PY. TSH, ACTH, and CORT plasma levels were elevated during peak effects of HD PY, whereas PRL plasma levels were increased following MD and HD PY. Conclusion PY affects core dimensions of altered states of consciousness and physiological parameters in a dose-dependent manner. Our study provided no cause for concern that PY is hazardous with respect to somatic health.

endured through time and history to assuage the ills of humankind and assist in the prevention of
further diseases and imbalances of health. Chinese herbal medicine is notable for its sophistication
in addressing clinical concerns while remedying an individual’s particular needs. Thousands of
years old, the herbal medicine tradition remains a vibrant player in today’s health field.
Chinese Herbal Medicine: Modern Applications of Traditional Formulas, written by Dr. Chongyun
Liu and Angela Tseng, is the newest addition to the busy clinician’s repertoire. With over 20 years
of clinical experience, Dr. Liu supplies more than 860 formulas with descriptions of appropriate
customization that will enable practitioners to tailor herbal formulas to meet patients’ needs. In
addition, a listing of over 640 individual herbs provides quick access to clinical modifications. Of
significant note is the extensive review of 190 allopathic medical conditions with corresponding
traditional Chinese medicine diagnoses and formulations.
The publication of this text is another step forward in bringing Chinese medicine to the forefront
of the integration between Eastern and Western medicine. May this book guide and assist practi￾tioners and students of traditional Chinese medicine in their lifetime pursuit of excellence on the
journey of clinical study.

a variety of tree species. Due to its ease of cultivation and its
pungent flavor, Shiitake is being considered as an alternative
crop in many areas of the United States. Shiitake have been
used in the Orient for about 2000 years, but have only been
commercially cultivated since 1940. About 160,000 metric
tons are produced annually in Japan, half of which is dried and
exported. It represents a two billion dollar industry which
employs about 200,000 people.

Our study provided no cause for concern that PY is hazardous with respect to somatic health.

filamentous fungi in combination with synthetic chemistry to provide
novel routes to the family of diterpenes isolated from the Chinese herbal
plant, Tripterygium wivordii. The isolated diterpene triepoxides. Mptolide
(2) and tripdiolide (3), which represent the first reported natural products
containing the 18 (4->3) abeo-abietane skeleton, were of interest since
they have been shown to possess significant anti-neoplastic and
immunosuppressive activity. However. neither T. wivordii plants nor
plant cell cultures yield adequate material for the assessment of
structure-activity relationships. Multi-step syntheses also failed to
provide sufficient quantities. This thesis describes a series of
experiments to functionalize the synthetic diterpene congeners.

structural relationship to 2 and 3 and which may be of interest as
biologically active compounds.
